What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Send message 2. Haphazardly get error message and not get my messages delivered What is the expected output? What do you see instead? This is what I get occasionally when sending a message: (13:35:30) Message may have not been sent because a timeout occurred: oi! :p (13:35:47) Message could not be sent because an error with the switchboard occurred: oi! :p What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? Using Pidgin 2.5.5, msn-pecan-0.0.18.exe and Windows Vista x64 Please provide any additional information below. The friend I'm trying to send a message to when I get this error is using Windows Live Messenger. |

Getting same issue with another friend who's also using Windows Live Messenger, but it seems it only comes up when they've got the latest version of it, I don't have any issues with those of my friends who've got older WLM versions. |

Small update; recently got same issues with a friend who tried using pidgin (I was using pecan on pidgin, my friend wasn't). |

It could be this pidgin bug: http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/3330 |

Yes, I read about and experienced this bug before I went over to msn-pecan; it's the main reason I started using this addon. I was hoping that msn-pecan would fix it, since the pidgin team seems rather disinterested in fixing anything that's got anything with msn to do (I'd be too, but unfortunately quite a few of my friends like to use msn :p). |

There are a few things msn-pecan can do to avoid this problem, and I believe we are already doing a better job than pidgin, but nonetheless timeouts *will* happen, and they do even on the official client AFAIK. |

No, it's a different thing: when it happens, I cannot chat anymore with the buddy presenting this issue, BUT I can talk with other buddies (on the same WLM account). The only solution for me is to Enable/Re-Enable WLM (reconnecting). So there isn't a real timeout, or I shouldn't be able to chat with anyone. |

frasten: ok, that is a different issue (critical IMO), can you file a separate bug for that? |

I think this is *that* bug. Can you confirm, Aunion? When you get those timeouts, are you able to chat with other people? |

Yup, can chat with other people, sort of "singles out" certain people whom I get timeouts with. |

Ok, then I'm changing the summary.
Summary: Unable to chat after message timed out

I get this a LOT, but really only at work. The firewall on the university wifi has an annoyingly short timeout before it drops connections. Even worse, they changed it recently so now after the timeout occurs the connections just hang instead of getting back a RST, so I get my "message could not be delivered" only after 5-10 minutes have passed. Is there some way to do periodic keepalive traffic on the switchboard connection? I bet that would fix this for a LOT of people if not everyone. |
