Abstract
This paper proposes an intuitive 3D user interface based on hand gestures, implemented with light sensitive cameras and reflective markers. User of the system can create and modify file, picture and video with hands. Tasks that are more complex can be done by using a programmable user interface.
Introduction
With the advance in computer hardware and human-computer interface (HCI) field, user interface used in computer has changed a lot in the recent years. From punched card to keyboard, from text to graphic, from command to menu, computer users can complete their tasks more easily and naturally. However, most user interfaces we used nowadays still require the use of some unnatural device like keyboard. Extensive practice may be needed in order to interact with the computer fluently and effectively. For the elderly and young children, the unnatural interaction with computer and the metaphor feedback environment from it makes them afraid to begin learning.
Nevertheless, when we look at the home entertainment market, we will find an interesting increase in the coverage of age. More elderly and young children play electrical games, as touch screen, voice recognition and motion detection system is used by game consoles in home. These natural interaction methods proofed to be a huge succeed. It no doubt gives us the trend of future HCI development.
This proposal suggests an intuitive 3D user interface based on hand gestures. An inexpensive and easy-to-use motion capture system with light sensitive cameras and reflective markers will be implemented, for the purpose of recognizing hand gestures. The user will interact with the computer in a virtual environment with actions he would do as if in real life.
