Myspace Open Source Hack Initiative

myspace has emerged as the most popular social networking site. one of the key factors in its growth is the freedom it allows its users to customize their profiles using html, css, and embedded media.

while myspace allowed its user unprecedented freedom in customizing their profiles, it did so using a quixotic layout system that has been the bane of designers, both professional and recreational.

despite is flawed design model, myspace's wild popularity and the cottage industry that has arisen around customized skins probably insures that any reforms or improvements in its code or practices will be slow and subject to considerable resistance. in the meantime, designers and casual users alike are left to make due with the materials at hand.

moshi, the myspace open source hack initiative, seeks to promote elegance in myspace design by developing and publishing open source stylesheets that emphasize simplicity, sensibility, and, where possible, established web-design standards.
