Project page for the Dazzle configurable switcher widget.
Updated May 8, 2011 by heads...@gmail.com

Introduction

Dazzle is a configurable switcher widget for Android devices; it allows you to create one or more switcher widgets, in four sizes, with your choice of controls. You can choose from WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, airplane mode, and brightness controls; on supported devices, brightness lets you toggle between auto and manual modes.

Written by Ian Cameron Smith (headstay); released under GPL.

8 May 2011: Version 2.9 now available -- upgrades by Dmitry.

FAQ

  • Why doesn't the Bluetooth switcher work on my phone?
Bluetooth control is only supported by Android itself from version 2.0 on.
  • Why doesn't the brightness control work on my HTC Tattoo?
There's something wierd about how this phone does brightness. None of the brightness widgets I've looked at work. I'm still looking into it.
  • Why doesn't auto brightness mode work on my phone?
Auto brightness control is currently only supported on the Moto Droid and Nexus One. It may (should) work on other phones which have Android 2.0 or later and a light sensor; but if you have no light sensor, then auto mode can't possibly work.
  • Why doesn't it show the GPS state?
Sorry, there's no way (currently) for non-system apps to do this in Android, without whacking the battery.
  • Why doesn't it appear in the Market on my phone?
Sorry, but Dazzle is based on Android version 1.6. Hopefully Android 1.6 -- or later -- will soon be rolled out across the board and this problem will go away.

Features

  • Runs on Android 1.6 and later.
  • Four widget sizes.
  • Choose multiple controls from Ringer, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, airplane mode, sync, and brightness.
  • Brightness control gives you three manual light settings plus control of auto mode.
  • You can have multiple copies of the widget in use with different controls.

How to Use

First, this is a widget, not an app. To use it, you must install it as a widget on your home screen.

  • Pick a vacant spot on your home screen.
  • Long-press it.
  • In the popup menu, select "Widgets", then "Dazzle".
  • You will be shown a dialog which asks you to select which controls you want; check the ones you want in this widget and press Save.

To change the controls in an existing widget, delete it and re-add it.

Once installed, touch the controls to activate them:

  • Ringer popup pops up a dialog which allows you to set the ringer mode. Choose from Off, Vibe, User, or Max. User is the level set by the slider, which is your user preset, not necessarily the current level. Moving the slider changes your preset and sets User mode.
  • WiFi toggles the WiFi state. It displays an amber indicator while the WiFi is powering up or down.
  • Bluetooth toggles the Bluetooth state. It displays an amber indicator while the Bluetooth is powering up or down. This only works from Android 2.0 on.
  • GPS takes you to the GPS settings screen. For security reasons, this is all that Android will allow.
  • Airplane mode toggles airplane mode.
  • Sync toggles the master sync mode. While off, your apps won't sync (contacts, emails, etc.) with the network. This only works from Android 2.0 on.
  • Brightness poup pops up a dialog which allows you to select your brightness. Select one of the mode buttons, or move the slider to set the user level and go into user mode.
  • Brightness/auto poup is similar, but lets you select Auto as a mode. This only works from Android 2.0 on, and only on devices with a light sensor.
