Regular nightly or weekly dev builds #617

It would be useful if, rather than always requiring users to build from source,
we regularly pushed out dev builds on a nightly or weekly basis.

This has been a long-standing nice-to-have. The main blockers are:
* Our current release process is fairly manual and this would have to be as
automated as possible to minimize developer interruption.
* We'd like to do some amount of testing on it not just build it.

This would also make our regular release process a lot easier.

We're now building nightly on modpagespeed.com/buildbots and running tests, but these builds aren't succeeding consistently. Once they are we can make the binaries available for download.

It would be easy enough to provide downloads to builds that pass tests.
One issue I'm thinking of is the signing/updating through package manager.
We could set up a ppa for the deb builds if people would want to stay on
the 'bleeding edge' and equivalent for rpm. Or maybe I'm just
misunderstanding the use case of providing the nightly binaries

What would you think of providing nightly builds that weren't signed, where instead the only security people had was downloading them over https?

(Which would require us getting and maintaining an https cert for modpagespeed.com, but that would be good to do anyway.)

I'd be fine with that. 👍

Unsigned https-fetched nightlies sound about the right level of effort to
me. The folks using them will be pretty bleeding-edge.

(It's also the same level of protection we offer for source downloads.)
