Introduction
Some designers have taken the rise of broadband to mean that graphic intensive pages are now acceptable, that 600k Flash intros are desirable, and that otherwise bombarding the user with bandwidth-hungry sites is commendable.
Sadly, plenty of users don't have the same high speeds you might be used to. The use of mobile devices to browse the web is on the rise, and there are still people on dial-up modems out there. It's all too easy to forget that when you're surfing on a high speed office connection or even your home broadband.
This modem emulator was originally released on AddedBytes.com (formerly ILoveJackDaniels.com) in July 2004 and was intended to provide a tool for webmasters to see their sites as some of their users do - slowly.
What's New?
In July 2008, I rewrote the code into a more up-to-date format (it was a mess before ... no structure, no validation ... awful). It has been tested with PHP5.
The code was turned into this open source project and released under a New BSD License in July 2008.
Join!
The main reason this code has been released under an open source license is to allow others to improve it. Best places to start are probably the Google Group for discussions and the commit list to be notified of changes to the code and issues.
Host!
If you are happy to provide a mirror for the emulator, host it on your site and email me the URL to add to the right-hand side of this page.
