Introduction
Igor Skochinsky has released a set of Kindle Mobipocket tools written in Python that allow you to read DRM'd MobiPocket files on Amazon Kindles. However, these tools required a certain amount of command-line knowledge, and the process for converting files to work on the Kindle was time-consuming. Mobi2Kindle is an AppleScript wrapper around Igor's tools designed to make converting books as simple as drag-and-drop.
Details
- To get started, download the app from the Downloads page, open the DMG file, and copy Mobi2Kindle.app over to your Applications folder. I recommend also dragging Mobi2Kindle down to your dock for ease of use, but this is of course up to you.
- Run Mobi2Kindle by double-clicking on the application.
- The first time you run Mobi2Kindle, you will be asked to enter your Amazon Kindle's serial number. Enter it when prompted and click OK.
- If you entered a valid serial number, you will then be given a MobiPocket PID. This is the code you must enter at a MobiPocket vendor site or e-library site. Copy and paste the PID into your vendor's site, and click Quit when you're done.
- Now you need to acquire a DRM-protected MobiPocket file, encoded for your Kindle's PID. Many e-libraries now support this format. These files will have an extension of .PRC.
- Drag and drop the DRM-encoded .PRC file(s) onto the Mobi2Kindle icon. If all goes well, you should be shown the new, Kindle-ready .AZW file(s).
- If you get an error, double-check the serial number you entered and the PID. You can re-enter the serial number by double-clicking the MobiPocket application, and clicking Re-enter serial #.
- Now, just connect your Kindle via USB and copy the .AZW file(s) into your Kindle's documents folder. The books should show up on the Home screen, just like any other Kindle books!
Man, thanks a million. I have been flailing around trying to make python work with the MobideDRM 'suit', some wont run, random script errors etc.
This works flawlessly, high speed low drag.
Got any solutoins for the Adobe eBooks format?
Hi James I'm using your software on an iMac running Snow Leopard. I was able to generate the appropriate PID but when I drag the ebook downloaded from Mobipocket.com onto the Mobi2Kindle? icon in the Dock, I get a message that says "Trouble with Macintosh HD (followed by the path to the book). I've also tried dragging it the the program file on the hard drive but without success. I've checked the serial number on the Kindle and the PID spelling.
Any suggestions?

Hi I just got exactly the same error as Lester - "trouble with xx HD.."
Have any recent update to the OX system caused any trouble or what can this be?
i would like to ask, if I don't hv the Kindle kit, but using Kindle for Mac, how can I generate the Kindle PID and use it to generate new PID for Mobipocket? Thanks in advance. I really want to convert my purchased Mobipocket ebooks and read them in my iPhone.
Anybody else having trouble with the program accepting your Kindle serial number?! ARGH!
@volunteerbirchtree, I'm having problesm as well with my kindle 3 serial number.
I, too, am unable to generate a mobi PID with my kindle 3 serial number
It will not accept my Kindle 3 serial number either. The frustrating part is that I know my PID number so I don't need it to generate it for me. Grrr. Igor Skochinsky, any plans to fix this?
I too have gotten the same message: Trouble with Macintosh HD. The program now is showing a different PID number each time I try to use it and I have to input not only my proper PID but my Kindle's serial # each time. Then I get the Trouble with .....message. Has this this guy stopped working on this program? Is it time to find another mobi to kindle program to use?
Worked like a charm. I downloaded a test book from the King County Library System (Seattle area) and it worked as described above. Now you have to search for a Mobipocket eBook, but there seem to be a lot of them in the system. THANKS!!!
Can I do this on iphone?
