issue 156 (The KML alpha value becomes the maximum alpha value not just...) commented on by chantillian   -   Noob here. I was only a few minutes into my first foray of KML files when I unwittingly stumbled upon this problem. I see this was reported over a year ago, but I think the description is vague. So here's a description of what I did: I too drew a polygon and used the slider in the Places pane to set opacity. Then I right-click on the polygon and cut-paste it into a text editor where I see all alpha values set to FF - the max - in the KML, rather than the correct alpha value. So this means GE can't save away opacity values for later use, right? :( Ouch. But once I hand edit the KML file to set the alpha value to less than FF, then open it in GE, I see that GE leaves the alpha value alone. So I think I'm left to hand-edit my alpha values and sorta guess at what the hex value is of the opacity I'm happy with when viewing/setting it in GE. Using version 5.1.3533.1731 (Build Date Nov 12, 2009) in Windows XP.

issue 323 (Toogle display of feature names on map on/off) reported by gjmath...@gmail.com   -   Which products are relevant to this feature request? Google Earth What should this feature enhancement do? Recommend having an option to toggle the display of feature names as labels on the map. If a given KML resource has many features then the labels obscure much of the map details and placemarks themselves. A toggle option would allow user to define when the labels should be shown without having the KML designer to hard code one or the other options. This will be similar to the option to toggle the grid lines but this would affect whether the labels are rendered or not. Are there any currently known workarounds that produce the same, or similar, result? Work-around is either not include a name for a given feature then you have untitled labels in the menu list view which makes finding placemarks in the list nearly impossible. A better approach is using a styleMap with labelStyle scale = 0 by default and scale = 1 in highlight mode but this prevents showing all the labels which is sometimes desired. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/earth/thread? tid=102295d8e0e29b85&hl=en

Well, performance has definitely improved in relation to GE 4.2 for the included benchmark. The official 5.1 release now runs only about 1.5x slower than 4.2 for this performance test, as compared to 10x I saw with 5.0. Congratulations!

issue 320 (Animation broken in Google Earth 5) commented on by nicholasmrobinson   -   Sorry for not responding sooner to your prompt reply. I am attaching an example that was a part of the Google Earth KML documentation for Google Earth 4 and also an example of what I did in the same manner. The important differences between these animations and what can be achieved using Tour is that in the attached examples the user is free to navigate at will around an independently moving/animated object. In Google Earth 4, these animations were smooth and reliable. For some reason I am not being allowed to upload these examples here. I have put them both in the following location. http://models.awsopenwind.org/models/Example_Site/ Both take a little while to load up and the turbine animation needs the animation set to full speed and to run for a little while before all the models are fully loaded up but then the animation is smooth. This is not the case with Google Earth 5 and onwards. Obviously you can only have one of these animated KMLs loaded at any one time for it all to work. Again, apologies for my tardy response and I will be sure to reply more promptly in future. Thanks for looking at this, Nick

I would like to see Google Earth to display the tour controls when the kml is loaded if there is a tour stored in the kml. The play button in the standard controls is enough of a hint for the user to click on it.

issue 320 (Animation broken in Google Earth 5) reported by nicholasmrobinson   -   Which products are relevant to this feature request? Google Earth What should this feature enhancement do? Be able to do things that Google Earth 4 could do. Are there any currently known workarounds that produce the same, or similar, result? Not any more. Every subsequent version appears to get worse. If I could distribute version 4 to people or they could access it on the web that would be great. At present there is no way to put an animated model in Google Earth and move around the model freely. This was a really cool feature of Google Earth 4 that is no longer supported. I don't understand why Google crippled their own software in this respect. I have asked for help on the forums but the only Google staff who answered did not understand the problem. As it stands I will need to remove support for Google Earth which is shame as it was such a cool feature when it worked. If I have to re-implement then so be it but there are no examples of being able to freely move around whilst viewing an animated model. Tour does not appear to support this and all the old animation examples are now broken. Nick

issue 319 (SchemaData does not display correctly in Google Maps Balloon...) reported by jason.birch   -   Which products are affected? Google Maps What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Create KML file with a BalloonStyle template that references SchemaData 2. Open in Google Maps by pasting URL into the search box 3. See raw text of displayName and data displayed in the balloon e.g.: $[property/legal_id/displayName] $[property/legal_id] What is the expected output or behavior? What do you see instead? Ideally, Google Maps would either support SchemaData in BalloonStyle templates, or revert to Description display when such elements are detected in the BalloonStyle. issue 296 (Time on nested features is not defined) commented on by gjmath...@gmail.com   -   Looking deeper into the OGC KML Specification documentation specifically the "KML 2.2 – An OGC Best Practice" document reveals the correct behavior of inherited time. "... the value of the following Feature elements shall be inherited by all Feature members of a hierarchy unless overruled by the presence of such elements locally [list includes TimePrimitive]. Inheritance of these elements continues to any depth of nesting, but if overruled by a local declaration, then the new value is inherited by all its children in turn." Source: http://portal.opengeospatial.org/files/?artifact_id=23689 While this was not implemented correctly in Google Earth 5.0.x, it was however fixed in 5.1.3509.4636 (beta). It is no longer a Google Earth defect but the Google's KML Reference <http://code.google.com/apis/kml/documentation/kmlreference.html> should reflect this paragraph from the OGC document so misinterpretations can be avoided. There are no inheritance rules defined in the KML Reference documentation yet the KML specification allows Containers and Features to include elements like Time that are inherited or overridden.

Source: http://portal.opengeospatial.org/files/?artifact_id=23689 While this was not implemented correctly in Google Earth 5.0.x, it was however fixed in 5.1.3509.4636 (beta).

Create a placemark 2. Add video content to description 3. Duplicate video content in description What is the expected output or behavior? What do you see instead? Google Earth crashes What application versions (if any) are you using? Google Earth 5.1.3509.4636 (beta) Which operating systems (and/or relevant web browsers) are affected? Windows Vista Business Please provide any additional information (code snippets/links) below. GE crashes when same flash player is used and loaded from same server. (see video_dup_not_working.kml) More than one video can be used if: - Different flash players are used, even from same server - Same flash player is used, but loaded from different servers (see video_dup_working.kml)

issue 86 ((old-number-84) Support zipfile passwords on KMZ) commented on by j...@gavia.dk   -   There is a work-around for this feature. You can place the KMZ file behind a HTTP-AUTH URL. Then Google Earth will prompt the user for username and password (just like any other browser). Jarl

issue 248 (Autoplay of tours) commented on by j...@gavia.dk   -   Just like you can make Google Earth position the camera at a specific place when opening a KML file, it would be nice if you could make Google Earth play a tour when opening a KML file. Today this is only achievable if the KML consists of nothing but the tour. That is sad because often you want additional content to be loaded as well. Jarl

issue 316 (Geometry as ScreenOverlay) reported by tohlsen   -   Which products are relevant to this feature request? Google Earth What should this feature enhancement do? Similar to how points, lines, and polygons can be created in 3D space, it is desireable to make styled points, lines, and polygons on the 2D projected screen. Are there any currently known workarounds that produce the same, or similar, result? Can make polygons and lines in an image and then use that image as a ScreenOverlay, but this is quite a hack which does not scale well.
