This was an exercise in writing a Python extension that resulted from a failure to find a Python module for the infrared remote control that comes with the MacBooks.

Amit Singh wrote a really nice C program called iremoted, which had everything necessary but the Python hooks.

Feel free to alter, improve, whatever.
