Installation
Installing Books.app on your iPhone.

READ THIS FIRST!

The wonderful people who made the Installer.app have also made a one-click solution for installing Installer itself on your iPhone. (My head is spinning just thinking about that.) Visiting their site is strongly encouraged, and Installer.app is the recommended way to install Books.app. Just be sure to get the "Community Sources" package; Books.app's package is maintained by Ste.

Of course, even though this is a lot easier now, all these third-party apps are not supported by Apple, so proceed with caution.

Old, crusty instructions

Installing an application on the iPhone is not a simple process. If you don't know what "jailbreak" or "iPHUC" means, you should google those terms. iFuntastic may also be helpful.

These instructions are for Mac OS X.

Jailbreaking your Phone

The bestest instructions can be found on the iPhone Dev Wiki.

Installing SSH

You need to install SSH on your iPhone so you can make your applications executable. TUAW has a series of links to tutorials and so forth. You should also install scp (secure copy) to allow you to copy files while maintaining execute permissions.

IMPORTANT: CHANGE YOUR IPHONE'S DEFAULT PASSWORD! The default password is documented all over the 'net, and if you do not change it, you are leaving your phone wide open to unscrupulous crackers! Details are in the tutorial on installing SSH.

Copying Books.app to your iPhone

  1. Build Books.app from source, or just download the current release (recommended). For this tutorial I'll assume it was downloaded to your Desktop.
  2. With Wi-Fi operational, find out the IP address of your phone. Go to Settings -> Wi-Fi, then click on the blue disclosure triangle next to your current network. The IP address will be listed on the subsequent page: for this tutorial we'll assume it's 192.168.1.1.
  3. If Books.app has not been completely uncompressed (it's named Books.app.tar or Books.app.tar.gz), double-click it to uncompress it.
  4. Open a Terminal window and type: scp -rp ~/Desktop/Books.app root@192.168.1.1:/Applications/, using your iPhone's actual IP address, of course.
  5. Enter your password (and you changed it from the default, right?) and Books.app will be copied over. Reboot your iPhone, and it will appear in the SpringBoard.

Using Installer.app

Books.app is now included in the beta Installer.app package manager for the iPhone. Thanks, guys! You can now install the Installer with the procedures above, and install Books.app directly from there. You should still download the copybookdir.sh script for installing books, however.

;) Installer.app gives an error when trying to install Books.app ...I think it's because here there's versione 1.3.6, while on Installer.app you find 1.3.5...maybe there's something to update? ;)

Bye

Any idea on the battery life of an iPhone when used as a ebook reader is? I use a Sony Clie now for all my reading, and can probably hit 9 hours or so. I'm usually reading in low light conditions though, and have the backlighting at 50%.

Just curious.

Comment by Mike.W.Meyer, Dec 11, 2007

I'm afraid I can't provide hard data for the battery life question - my iPhone winds up docked overnight, and when I'm working at home so it can play music. Which brings up the question I have: how much time do you think you're going to spend just reading on it? Over 90% of the time I'm reading from it, I've got it playing music as well.

Apple says 8 hours of talk time, 7 hours of video playback, and up to 24 hours of audio playback. Audio playback tends to shut the screen down, so you can't expect anything near that 24 hour time. Video playback is pretty CPU intensive, so I'd that's a reasonable lower bound on book reading time - even if you've got the iPod running the entire time. Of course, real life may vary.

One thing to consider is that you can buy usb/iphone cables for $3 (not from Apple, mind you), so if you've got a laptop, you can throw that in the bag and recharge it from the laptop while you're running around. On the other hand, once you've set up the iphone, you tend to have a lot fewer reasons for taking the laptop.

And finally, another request: people complain that you can't enjoy the sound of a page turning on an ebook. But with your so-spiffy-you-should-consider-patenting it touch to page interface, you could. Yeah, it's probably a lot of work since you don't do any sounds now, but it would still be very cool.

thanks, <mike

Just wanted to report an error. I've installed several books, and then I installed your app, and they do not appear. I checked via SSH and the books are in var/root/Media/EBooks. Any recommendations?

Having the same problem as andrew_w. Books installed but not seeing them in the app. Help?

Comment by jcmejiar, Mar 01, 2008

Same here with 1.4-pre03-r274. The application opens but it freezes. Went back to 1.3.7 and everything is O.K. I've tried with the books on var/root/Media/EBooks and with var/mobile/Media/EBooks with no luck.

Comment by ekripton, Mar 15, 2008

it might be like mine in ~private/var/root/media/EBooks i saw that with Finder installed on the itouch. I have 1.3.7 though. I hope it helps

Comment by jpincheira, Mar 24, 2008

I guess the people who's sharing their ebooks directories must say which firmware are they using because the newer firmwares don't use the root directory.

Thanks.

i had same problem but i got my books to show up using EBookK 1.3 though i did have to manually navigate to /var/mobile/Media/EBooks folder. I'm guessing Books app is still looking at /var/root/Media/EBooks folder.. and it doesn't have enough permission to read/view the books.. i tried manually changing the permission for the /var/root/Media/EBooks folder but it's still not showing up...

hopefully this gets fixed soon.. meanwhile BooksJ (1.3) !!

Comment by WWong87, Apr 22, 2008

Whats a terminal window? Dont understand that term..

Comment by matt.san, Apr 27, 2008

>>hopefully this gets fixed soon.. meanwhile BooksJ (1.3) !!

Have you got BooksJ 1.3 able to locate your ebooks? Can't seem to do it, wish I hadn't update the vanilla Books app as it worked fine. Any older versions available for install anywhere?

Comment by mike.kochan, Apr 27, 2008

anyone still have the previous versions of "Books" please? i urgently need it as i am afraid that i m facing the same problems mentioned in previous posts after installing the 1.4 versions, please help

Comment by mike.kochan, Apr 27, 2008

can anyone please email a previous versions of "Books" to me please?

Comment by feelmyring, Apr 28, 2008

I'd like to add my name to the "needs previous version" list. I tried everything on the help page to get Books to find my eBooks, to no avail. I need my Diamond Age fix!

Comment by rhylith, May 05, 2008

1.4 locks up for me as well (1.1.3 firmware)

Comment by ibenxx, May 28, 2008

Can I read e-books on my iPhone without installing SSH?

Comment by aztaki7, May 31, 2008

Just installed ver 1.5-r523 from ver 1.4-r? . Can no longer use landscape mode - the bar at the top rotates, but not anything in books.app.

I'd like to return to ver 1.4, which was fine - could you tell me please where to find it?

Comment by matt.san, Jun 30, 2008

Unbelievably, I STILL can't get this to work again as it always fails to locate my ebooks. The old version I had ages ago worked fine, but I had to go and update didn't I! Posted ages ago (April) but since given up. I thought, after a couple of months, v1.5 may work...but it doesn't.

Always comes up with the same %$%ing message "/var/mobile/Media/EBooks doesn't appear to exist". GRRRRRRRR! IT DOES! IT DOES %^$£ING EXIST! I've tried every variation (via Cyberduck) but I still phail at life on this issue.

I'd be eternally grateful for someone to advise as I really miss the app.

Sorry for double post. I just wanted to add, I've tried every version, old, new, BooksJ, they ALL show up the same error. I'm fairly savvy with such things and it really pains me that I still I haven't got it working again after all this time :;
