iPhoneBrowser Usage and Guidelines

Introduction

iPhoneBrowser is a Windows based file browser for your iPhone. It features drag and drop uploading to your phone, automatic and manual backups of files on your phone, previews of text and picture files and very cool icons.

Usage

To use, plug in your iPhone and run iPhoneBrowser. The screen should show up with a listing of your folders on the left. Once a folder is selected, the files show up on the upper right. Select a file to see the contents in the lower right. Right-click a file or group of files to see a menu describing your different options, Save As, Backup File, Restore File (not yet implemented), Replace File and Delete File. You can also drag and drop files or folders into the file window to upload them to that folder.

Make sure you have at least v7.3.1 of iTunes installed.

Connecting your iPhone

You can use it with or without jailbreaking your phone, but if you don't jailbreak, you won't get very far! A locked iPhone basically has a small area of folders called a sandbox to work with. Go here to find out about jailbreaking your phone: http://www.modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Automatic Preview

If the file you selected is a text-based file, the text of the file will automatically be shown in the lower right preview area. Sometimes special characters are not shown properly, but it gives you an idea of what data is in the file. If you select a picture file, that preview is automatically loaded in the same area. Apple formatted PNG files do show in the preview. Selecting audio files will play audio. Files are only previewed if < 10MB. You can manually preview a larger file using the Preview button. You can also disable automatic file preview with the Auto Preview Enabled button.

Drag and Drop

You can drag and drop files into the file window to upload them to the selected folder in the tree on the left. You can drop multiple files or folders as well. If there is an existing file with the same name in the directory, it will be overwritten on your phone, but a backup copy is made automatically first.

Save As

This menu item will prompt you to save the file in a location of your choosing. The file is downloaded off of your phone and stored with whatever filename and location you choose. PNG files will optionally be converted from Apple format to a Windows acceptable PNG format.

Backup Files

Backups are created with the same directory structure as on the phone, but in a folder named "BACKUPS.(date).(time)". This allows you to save multiple version of the same file, and allows you to manually restore to a previous version of the file. Select Backup File to create a backup of the file(s) currently selected on your iPhone. Select View Backups to open a windows explorer window of the folder where backup folders are stored.

Temporarily turn off backup files by enabling the No Automatic Backups (this run) option. Default to no backups by enabling the No Automatic Backups (Startup default) option. You must enable the (this run) option to access the (Startup default) option.

Restore File

{function not yet implemented} This function will allow you to select a previously backed up version of a file. You must do this manually for now, using the replace file function.

Replace File

This function allows you to replace a file on your iPhone with one you select from your computer, backing up the original before replacing. The program will automatically rename the file to overwrite the file on the phone. For example, you can replace an "icon.png" stored on your phone with "MyCalculatorIcon.png" from your computer. The system will automatically backup the icon.png from the phone, and then upload your MyCalculatorIcon.png as icon.jpg.

Delete File

Selecting this deletes the file off of your phone after confirmation. The system will automatically backup the file before deleting.

View Backups

Select View Backups to open a windows explorer window of the folder where backups are stored.

Clean Backups

{function not yet implemented} This function will sort through your backups and delete duplicates.

Props

Thanks to the Manzana.dll folks (http://code.google.com/p/manzana/) for building a dll. I simply built a GUI around it.

Thanks so much for this guide. I would recommend that it be made clearer files like itunesmobiledevice.dll are required and how they are found. Also found that disabling my McAfee? antivirus was required before i could finally open iphonebrowser successfully.

i have an ipod touch and this works perfectly to load my pdfs and txt ebooks on.

Comment by goyal.piyush, Jan 06, 2008

request you to put backup as an option. My music folder is not being recognized by my iTunes and i've to delete the whole 6GB/s of tracks. now its making backup copies of it. I would appreciate if there was an option to not to make back up of deleted files.

Hi, I have a 1.1.3 activated, unlocked, and jailbroken iphone (all through ziphone 2.4) and i have installed both openSSH and BSDSubsystem but when i connect the phone to the computer iphone browser shows only the sandbox folders like itunes, ringtones, etc. I can't seen any apps, etc. On the bottom it says phone connected, not jailbroken. But that's not actually true, i have many 3rd party apps inside, installeapp etc. I even copied the iTunesMobileDevice.dll file into the same folder as iphonebrowser.exe but nothing changes. Am i missing some 3rd party app on the iphone? Do you know how i can solve this? Thank you Diego

Please, make a backup function optional. I've uploaded movie, than delete it, but iphonebrowser make backup of 1,43Gb. In such case it's unnecessary

Comment by tabadia, Jun 06, 2008

This app is working great, thanks!

Is there any viewer app that will let me look at pdfs that are about 15-20MB in size? I tried Docs, and when Safari opens them it says the file is too large to load.

Just paying my respects! New to the whole iPhone/iPod world (been a mini disc man for 10yrs...) and managed to delete 5 tracks I only just bought. Thinking an unbroken iPhone 3G would have no chance I tried iPhoneBrowser... and it just got my tracks back for me!

sweet!

Comment by Bookwormbook, Jul 23, 2008

Hi, I have a 1.1.4 activated, unlocked, and jailbroken iphone using ziphone 3.0. I was suffering the same issue - both ibrickr and iphonebrowser would not browse the phone other than the sandbox folders like itunes, ringtones, etc. I followed the fix refer to above at:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1328988&page=1

and that neatly solved the problem. To help others this means adding "http://i.unlock.no" as a source in the installer app on the phone (go to the top right, edit, add and type in that address). After a refresh of the sources you can download and install "ziphone jailbroker fix" from the "unlocking tools" folder in installer.

Interestingly this even fixes the fact that ibrickr isn't designed to work with firmware 1.1.4 at all.

Good stuff, guys! Thank you!

Hi there! I installad iPhoneBrowser and saw the "My USB disk" folder. Is it there from the beginning or is it something this program have created without my knowledge? I don't want to void my warranty on my iPhone 3G. What to do?

I have 16GB of music files to delete from my iPhone. It's trying to back it all up, which I would really like to avoid since it's a big waste of time. Why can't this be an option. Alternately, is there another tool that will do this for me?

Comment by r...@hotmail.com, Sep 02, 2008

Hi, great product! I need help though, I can't seem to locate my Ringtones an idea why it'll not let me see the directory / folder? Could it be that I need cfa2, and if so where do I get it? Thanks in advance. Roald.

Comment by riv...@hbentertain.com, Oct 09, 2008

I have had iPhonebrowser with my iPhone (original, still running 1.1.4) for some months and all of a sudden iPhonebrowser simply crashes when starting. I have no idea why. I did not alter anything on the phone. I can still SSH into it and everything looks okay, and of course the phone works just fine. But I keep some personal data on the phone itself and I need to update those binary files.

Any idea why iPhonebrowser just quit working?

Comment by dvanexx, Oct 17, 2008

Please make the backup feature optional. I use wiki2touch and backing up 2+ gig files I already have on my computer is a complete waste of time.

Hi,

I just installed the iPhoneBrowser Application and it runs well. The problem is that I can only view .jpg file, themes, ring tones, etc, etc, But not able to see aother types of files.

My iPhone Software version is V2.0. is that the cause of the issue?

Could you please help me?.

I would like to know how to find photos with iPhone Browser. I found my videos but I have yet to find the pictures. Please help. THANKS

Comment by podfish, Dec 04, 2008

XpressLLC: XP will mount the photo directories as either a camera in XP or as a portable device under windows. You don't need iphone browser to see them.

Comment by SoftWarewolf, Dec 08, 2008

i need to be able to delete files without backing them up first.. i got 15gb of junk files because of an interruption while syncing.

i selected to delete em all and after 10gb of backup i got a read error and none of the files even got deleted

Comment by SoftWarewolf, Dec 08, 2008

linkedineegroup: unfortunately that doesnt work.. you still need itunes to transfer new music\videos etc etc. :\

Comment by Ifrabjous, Dec 11, 2008

It won't open at all. I coped iTunesMobileDevice.dll into the dir, and it just won't open. When I have my iPhone plugged in, try opening it and absolutely nothing happens. It opens fine when my iPhone isn't plugged in, which is completely useless. But as soon as I plug it in, the app closes. Anyone know how to fix this?

Comment by nick.freeman91, Jan 05, 2009

I will add my voice to the consensus that automatic backup should be optional. I there a way to actually/permamently delete files? Ive tried again and again to delete files but they still appear there as if nothing had happened, and appear to still be taking up space. How do you make them go away?! Neither is drag n drop working for me- the files upload fine but just dont seem to exist when you try to access them on the iphone. Help nick.freeman91@gmail.com

Comment by lilactimes, Apr 13, 2009

Need to delete backups - for sure. Anyone any progress here ..? Just deleted from backup folder, but not checked yet if they're gonna come back .?! x-)

Comment by lilactimes, Apr 13, 2009

Backups appear to have stayed deleted on reboot etc - fingers crossed ;-).

Comment by accounts.niclas, Apr 27, 2009

Nice work. Still, the automatic backup should really be disabled or optional. Because iphonebrowser keeps crashing, usually due to 28 byte files of unknown file types. I can't delete those files because whenever iphonebrowser tries to back them up, it crashes. Did I mention drag&drop isn't working for me? Keep it up though...

Comment by phi.lam64, Jun 08, 2009

I had this program for awhile. Worked great with my iPod Touch 2nd Generation with 2.2.1. After a few months of not using it, i decided to open it again and backup my files. I plugged in my iPod, and the iPhonebrowser crashed. Need help!

It would be great to have a "Find" or "Search" feature built in to this application.

Comment by Jahooba, Jul 23, 2009

There's no search function here. What the hell? I mean, it's a great program and all and it's been very useful, but why omit such a basic feature?

Comment by Netsukenuts, Jul 28, 2009

I connect the Iphone and start the program. It opens, but saus to disconnect and reconnect iphone. It's like it never sees the Iphone. Is it because it has beeen jailbroken? Any help greatly appreciated

Could you make this for linux too because as of right now linux users have no way to access their iphones with 3.0 firmware (can't put videos or music on them) and I have tried this iPhoneBrowser on Windows and it works perfectly
