Stumbler - the Wireless Network Stumbler for the iPhone
Updated Feb 4, 2010 by lok...@gmail.com

Introduction

A new release from the iphone-wireless team, Stumbler lets you view the wireless networks in your area. While right now Stumbler only handles 802.11 networks, soon you should see Bluetooth and GSM capabilities as well.

Stumbler can not be distributed through the app store, as it uses private APIs!

Stumbler is still in a early Alpha stage, but it is fully functional, and pretty stable.

Planned Features

  • Auto Scanning
  • Manufacturer detection
  • Logging
  • A-GPS
  • Raw 802.11 packet capture (monitor mode)

would this allow me to connect to a VPN network that uses 802.1X/PEAP? I work on a college campus and I would love to have WIFI all day instead of crappy slow EDGE. Thanks, I am not familiar with this side of networking etc!

Comment by dennis.m...@gmail.com, Sep 11, 2007

I would like to be able to turn edge off, a weak wifi is better than edge.

Comment by mikeal.rogers, Sep 13, 2007

when is wep cracking gonna be in?

Comment by djM...@gmail.com, Sep 17, 2007

any chance on the source code?

Comment by project member lok...@gmail.com, Sep 17, 2007

source code is in SVN

Comment by kelli...@gmail.com, Sep 23, 2007

Great if the app could having a pinging capability from open networks to confirm that It is indeed an open network. The most suitable approach to this may be to call an http web service ad await a response.

Comment by mvbror...@gmail.com, Sep 23, 2007

i would love to contribute to a wireless sharing featue. It would be great to dock my iphone and extend the range of my current network.

Comment by barrat...@gmail.com, Oct 22, 2007

Hey, My name is fabe and I would like to tell you about your very good work, buddies. I really like this app, and is very promising. I would like to suggest a name for the app, because in the home page said so. I think a great name would be: "iWi". Short and it's a short word for "iWifi" nothing else! Hope you like it!

Comment by nschum@gmail.com, Nov 8, 2007

I'm excited about this. Auto Scanning will be cool. Just keep walking and the iPhone vibrates as soon as it finds an open Wi-Fi. It would also be great if you could connect directly from the Stumbler.

Comment by bili...@gmail.com, Nov 18, 2007

I particularly like this program, but one thing that was a thorn in my side was the default.png I made my own, feel free to use it if you're able to upload it to your iPhone/iPod

Comment by wasserma...@gmail.com, Jan 3, 2008

with Raw 802.11 packet capture (monitor mode) would be best iPhone app. Continue great job

Comment by foofs...@gmail.com, Jan 26, 2008

ability to connect to listed SSIDs would be excellent. has development on this stopped?

thanks - dirtymouse

Comment by jim.kel...@gmail.com, Feb 15, 2008

I noticed that when I had my router set to use WPA2 personal, stumbler reported it as WEP [WEP: Yes and WPA: No] while when I had it set to use WEP, it reported it as WPA [WEP: No and WPA: Yes] or am I just reading it wrong?

Comment by robertva...@gmail.com, Mar 15, 2008

I continue to get a download error in installer.app. What source should I add?

Comment by MAS....@gmail.com, Mar 18, 2008

So many people have recommended this, but as above I get download error in installer. I tried to manually install By putting unzipped files in 'apps' folder ... BUT I am a newb so would love a step by step guide to manually installing stumbler, properly pleaaaaase?

Comment by duhc...@gmail.com, Mar 27, 2008

Yeah, installer.app does not seem to work with certain sources; seems like you'll have to install it manually then :)

1. make sure you have installed OpenSSH (and that you did not turn it off with bosstools) 2. download the zip package above and unzip it 3. in my case (Leopard) the zipfile downloaded to and unzipped in my 'Downloads' folder. 4. note the IP address of your iPhone / iPod touch (mine is 192.168.1.12) 5. start terminal and type the following command: scp -r Downloads/Stumbler.app root@192.168.1.12:/Applications/ 6. the password is the default apple password (alpine) 7. restart your iPhone / iPod touch and you're done :)

good luck

Comment by robertva...@gmail.com, Mar 28, 2008

@duhcati: will try your howto, but what source should work for Stumbler in Installer.app

Comment by robertva...@gmail.com, Mar 28, 2008

Well, the SSH worked, but now I wonder if updating will be automatic. Will see...

Comment by tofar...@gmail.com, Apr 10, 2008

Is it possible to use the raw (monitor) mode drivers from the shell or other applications?

Comment by tmpucti...@gmail.com, May 18, 2008

seems like this project was left on the shelves =/ bummer

Comment by harry.ca...@gmail.com, Jul 20, 2008

It works. Far more comprehensive than the apple wifi search well done. I also made a new start page if anyone is interested:

Hey all, any new news on an update so that stumbler works with 2.0 firmware?

Comment by saintro...@gmail.com, Aug 6, 2008

I loved Stumbler, any chance it showing up on the App Store?

Comment by sirbae...@gmail.com, Aug 7, 2008

@saintrobot Haha, unlikely. I'm sure it will come to Cydia or installer 4.0 though.

Heres to hoping!

Comment by techcf.p...@gmail.com, Aug 8, 2008

Add GPS coordinations, logger and .ns1 / kismet format for saving. Would be great to use the iphone to bumbp my wigle.net scores.

Comment by fpres...@gmail.com, Aug 23, 2008

Comment by int...@gmail.com, Aug 25, 2008

yes, when will this be available for 2.0 firmwares? I saw it in the issues list. also, can this be downloaded as a cydia package somewhere?

Comment by randygut...@gmail.com, Sep 1, 2008

I tried to download this file with an iPhone 3G v2.0.2 and it said that Safari could not download the file. What is going on?

Comment by randygut...@gmail.com, Sep 9, 2008

I hate to ask a stupid question, but I just bought and jailbroke my iPhone.

How do I install this application without using App Store, Cydia, or Installer?

Comment by jplangl...@gmail.com, Sep 25, 2008

Comment by josefigu...@gmail.com, Oct 7, 2008

i want to know where the folder download is on the iphone or my computer and what is this command do

Comment by y.stei...@gmail.com, Mar 12, 2009

Clearly auto scan + Vibrate will make it a killer app. waiting for the patch :) should be easy to do.

Comment by adrien.n...@gmail.com, Jul 21, 2009

That's a great API! I could check the sources out. Now what should I do to "install" this on my mac? I want to be able to use it in another project. I just want to be able to get the signal's strength of 3 known wireless networks.

Any suggestions? I'm new on iPhone dev and I'm a little bit lost!

Thank you!

Adi

how to install on 3.1.2? it crashes down after ssh to apps, plz help or how to use it with terminal to packet capture (monitor mode)??

Comment by famil...@comcast.net, Jul 28, 2010

I installed through cydia and through SSH. I used the most recent version of the compiled app 0.04.1...etc. but it won't work on firmware 3.1.3. Is anyone else having this problem?

Comment by senthiln...@me.com, Aug 3, 2010

I am very interested in the GSM capabilities planned for this stumbler. I currently have iOS 4 and the field test mode does not work anymore as it did in 3.x, as everyone is probably aware.

Comment by diyu.w...@gmail.com, Sep 7, 2010

Does the Stumbler source code work on iOS 3.1.3 and iOS 4 ?

I tried using SmartSVN to download the source code, but error: "timed out waiting for server OPTIONS request failed ...".

I tried "svn checkout http://iphone-wireless.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ iphone-wireless-read-only" from the Terminal on Mac as well, with error: "svn: OPTIONS of 'http://iphone-wireless.googlecode.com/svn/trunk': could not connect to server (http://iphone-wireless.googlecode.com)"

What exactly you guys use to download the source please?

Comment by hseun...@gmail.com, Jul 28, 2011

how come there's no proj file on the folder can anyone tell me how to run this please?

Comment by project member lok...@gmail.com, Aug 2, 2011

Currently the code only works with iOS 2.0, using the open toolchain.

Comment by ricardo_...@yahoo.es, Nov 3, 2011

Perhaps this is a stupid question, but do I need an iPhone with jailbreak? I wonder this because I can use privte APIs in my original iPhone (without jailbreak)

Thanks.

Comment by guven...@gmail.com, Nov 5, 2011

Hi Ricardo,

in iOS 5 yes, you need a jailbreak.

I have posted a blog post about usage, that may come in handy. http://blog.guvenergokce.com/iphone-wireless-scanner-ios5/170/

Comment by goldenph...@gmail.com, Dec 31, 2011

will this ever be integrated with aircrack? if monitor mode is enabled we could use it to crack wifi passwords. please look into doing this please :)
