Apple80211Scan  

Performs a (passive) scan for networks.

int Apple80211Scan(struct Apple80211 *handle, CFArrayRef *list, CFDictionaryRef *parameters);

Parameters

  • handle An open handle from an Apple80211Open call, that has also been bound to an interface usingApple80211BindToInterface
  • list The (returned) CFArrayRef of CFDictionaryRefs containing information on each discovered network
  • parameters A CFDictionaryRef that contains scan parameters (see below)

Returns

  • 0 if successful. -1 if invalid arguments were passed in. More error values to come eventually.
  • (by reference) list a CFArrayRef containing a CFDictionaryRef for each of the discovered networks

Known keys for the parameters dictionary

All keys are CFStrings

  • SSID - A CFData that requests which ESSID (network name) should be scanned
  • SSID_STR - A CFString version of the SSID
  • SCAN_CHANNELS - A CFArray of CFDictionary objects, each containing CFStrings for "CHANNEL" and "CHANNEL_FLAGS"
  • SCAN_MERGE (true if unspecified) - A CFBoolean that specifies whether the function should discard multiple BSSIDs for the same network name.
  • SCAN_FLAGS (0 if unspecified)
  • SCAN_RSSI_THRESHOLD
  • SCAN_BSS_TYPE (3 if unspecified)
  • SCAN_TYPE (1 if unspecified)
  • SCAN_PHY_MODE (1 if unspecified)
  • SCAN_DWELL_TIME (0 if unspecified)
  • SCAN_REST_TIME (0 if unspecified)

Known dictionary keys for networks

All keys are CFStrings

  • SSID_STR - A CFString containing the ESSID (network name) of the network
  • RSN_IE - A CFDictionary of information on the RSN
  • WEP - A CFBoolean indicating whether the network is WEP-enabled
  • RSSI - An integer CFNumber indicating signal strength (wikipedia)
  • AP_MODE - An integer CFNumber (possibly showing whether the network is from an AP or is an ad-hoc network)
  • SSID - A CFData containing the raw bytes of the network name
  • CHANNEL - An integer CFNumber of the channel the network was seen on
  • CHANNEL_FLAGS - An integer CFNumber (though I don't know what channel flags exist)
  • BEACON_INT - An integer CFNumber probably indicating the network's beacon interval (but I don't know the units yet)
  • CAPABILITIES - An integer CFNumber probably containing flags for the network's capabilities (possibly whether it's a/b/g?)
  • scanWasDirected - A CFBoolean possibly indicating whether the scan was specifically directed at the network?
  • IE - A CFData containing miscellaneous information elements found on the beacons (I'm assuming)
  • APPLE_IE - A CFDictionary containing parsed Apple-specific (from Airport base stations) properties
  • BSSID - A CFString containing a standard colon-separated BSSID (MAC address) but that doesn't have leading 0's in the case of single hex digits
  • HIDDEN_NETWORK - A CFBoolean indicating whether the network is hidden (implies that it's performing a passive scan – verified)
  • AGE - An integer CFNumber possibly indicating whether this is a cached network from a previous scan?
  • NOISE - An integer CFNumber that appears to quantify how noisy the network signal is

BEACON_INT is the number beacons sent per second by an access point. By default, most wireless network uses a beacon interval of 100msec. Therefore, BEACON_INT is normally 10 (per second). This is also the interval how often a wireless client in Power-Save mode wakes up to listen for DTIM (delivery traffic indication message). Therefore, in order to conserve battery power, network operators might increase the beacon interval beyond 100msec (hence a smaller BEACON_INT).
