A list of websites which are distributing iNdependence (or other iPhone unlocking software which is covered under the GPL) in violation of the GPL.

Introduction

This page is to collect a list of websites which are distributing binary versions of iNdependence as part of their iPhone unlocking service, but are not making the source code publicly available (nor giving credit). If you know of any others, please submit them here.

This also includes sites which are distributing ZiPhone without source code. Although ZiPhone is not my application, large parts of it are based off of GPLed code (one example: the SIM unlocking app within it uses GPL code that was originally part of anySIM). By virtue of that fact, ZiPhone is also covered under the GPL. So while I have no right to enforce the license for ZiPhone, I will still point out sites which are distributing it without making any source publicly available.

I'm being strict about this because the only reason we've come to this point with the iPhone (being able to fully unlock it) is because people have been open with information. Now we get a bunch of profiteers who simply want to repackage everything and sell it without respecting the licenses of what they are distributing. I'm not against the sale of the software + support to go with it, but these people need to be aware that, in exchange for the ability to profit from the work of others, they must share back to the community any new work they add to it. This is the reason the GPL was created.

It's not about getting money from anyone, or trying to make people look bad, it's about moving knowledge forward as a group rather than duplicating effort by making all of our work private. If the original developers had taken this approach, there would be no such market to make profits from, and we'd have a bunch of fragmented efforts with a lot less success.

Talk to the people at gpl-violations.org

As the author you can demand that they comply with the license or stop distribuion. A laywer shouldn't charge too much for a quick C&D letter.

I sent an email to iphoneunlockuk.com and got this message from support:

"We sell the support rutger - if u can do it without our support then great :-) please see my post on macrumors for a discussion on this.

We do develop our own front ends, its just in the meantime independence is a stop gap until ours is ready.

Call me if you want to discuss things."

I'm not sure about these guys....

That's irrelevant though.. if they're distributing the app they must distribute source. The 'we're not selling it' line is bogus.

To add to that: even if they do develop their own solution in-house (thus replacing iNdependence), if it's based on any prior work which is covered under the GPL, then they must distribute the source code for it also. That includes Geohot's SIM unlocking software.

I've re-added iphoneunlockuk.com to the list because I have yet to see where they are distributing source code for anything. If they can prove that either:

a) their (new) in-house solution is not based on any previously GPLed code, or b) they're providing source code somewhere

then I will take them off the list. The same goes for other unlocking services which I link to here.

not using independence - written a front end calling applescript to ziphone... appreciate being taken off the list.

electroclinic is not selling any software however we are providing people with 24 hours support and use instruction. so could you kindly remove my domain from your gpl listing. thanks

Comment by nippon...@gmail.com, Mar 13, 2008

might want to take a look at http://www.iphonegeek.com/iphone-unlock.html

Comment by project member dial.ope...@gmail.com, Mar 13, 2008

@jodysanders78: ZiPhone? is also based off of GPL code. So even if you have some sort of agreement with Zibri about using ZiPhone?, his code is GPL whether he likes it or not.

Comment by project member dial.ope...@gmail.com, Mar 13, 2008

@romeob: ok, I've removed your site. If anyone has used the electroclinic site and received software from them, let me know.

Comment by p.s%elec...@gtempaccount.com, Mar 29, 2008

look mate as i told you electroclinic provides service and support so could you kindly remove the name of your list from this link.

thank you for your undrestanding.

@romeob: That link is diff for this page (ie. it contains the differences between the old page and the new one). It's used to keep track of the history of this page and can't be modified.

Comment by duckmons...@gmail.com, Aug 7, 2009

Maybe google can do it. Perhaps email them to remove the diff.
