Frequently Asked Questions

Note from 0p: This information is mostly circa 1.1.1/1.1.2 firmware.

What Versions of Mac OS X/iTunes/iPhone Firmware Is iNdependence Compatible With?

It's been tested and is known to work on Intel and PPC Macintosh systems running Mac OS 10.4.10, 10.4.11, and 10.5.1, 10.5.2 and with iTunes versions 7.3 - 7.6.1

It's also been tested and is known to work with iPhone firmware 1.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, and 1.1.4.

Do I need any other applications besides iNdependence to jailbreak/activate my phone?

No, iNdependence does everything itself (doesn't rely on any external applications or special activities on your phone). The only exception to this is for SIM unlocking where the gunlock application is used. As well, it uses OpenSSH to communicate with the phone for some operations.

I previously used anySIM 1.0/iUnlock to SIM unlock my 1.0.x phone. Now I want to upgrade to 1.1.x and SIM unlock again. What should I do?

Before you can upgrade to 1.1.x, you need to revirginize your baseband. anySIM 1.0 and iUnlock had a problem whereby they would cause certain important parts of your phone's permanent memory to be overwritten. This causes major problems when you upgrade to 1.1.x and a new baseband is installed.

So you need to "virginize" those areas of memory again. Instructions and programs for doing this can be found on the iPhone Elite website.

http://code.google.com/p/iphone-elite/wiki/RevirginizingTool

The Pre Firmware Upgrade is failing? What gives?

First thing, check to ensure that you can SSH into your phone by opening /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and typing:

ssh root@<your phone's IP address>

and then entering your password if you are prompted to do so.

If that doesn't work, then iNdependence will not be able to do the Pre Firmware Upgrade. The biggest cause of this problem is a bad Wi-Fi connection between your computer and your phone.

If you can SSH into your phone from your computer, then try typing a few commands on your phone (cd .., cd /, etc) and see what happens. If you are disconnected at any point, or it locks up, then either your phone is going to sleep at some point, you have a bad Wi-Fi connection between your computer and your phone, or the shell on your phone isn't working properly (the default iPhone shell is notoriously flakey).

To make sure your phone doesn't go to sleep at any point, change Settings->General->Auto-Lock to never.

If you have a flakey Wi-Fi connection, then I can't really help you with that. Make sure your phone is fairly close to your computer.

In order to replace the shell on your phone, you'll need to use an SFTP program to upload a new shell program to /bin/sh. Instructions for doing this are beyond the scope of this FAQ.

I upgraded to 1.1.2 and now my phone/SMS program is crashing when I use it. Why?

You are likely using your phone in a country for which it's unable to find the phone number formatting data. Have a read through this page for details:

http://code.google.com/p/iphone-elite/wiki/fix_crashing_phone_sms_apps

The easiest option is to use the iWorld application to fix the problem, but I can't seem to find a standalone version of it anywhere. The only other option is to patch the necessary files on your phone yourself.

Comment by peterdsc...@optusnet.com.au, Dec 17, 2007

I would like to thank you. I have used independence twice once to jail break in 1.0.1 now to upgrade to 1.1.2. With great success. I would also like to use australian area codes how can I do this? I would also like to make a small financial contribution to show my appreciation, do you have an account I can send to? You should set up a tab for this as there are a lot of appreciative i phone owners who have used independence

Comment by dial.operator, Dec 17, 2007

At the bottom of the main iNdependence webpage I have a little blurb about donating. You can make donations via PayPal? to operator@dialectro.com

As for Australian area codes, I'm not sure. Have a look around the Hackintosh iPhone forums as I know there are people there who are from Australia: http://hackint0sh.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=123

Comment by Santafexcrunner, Dec 17, 2007

I had Spring board on my phone a few weeks ago then It completely froze up I was hours away from my house so I had to use my gf's computer to restart my Iphone. I had put off updating my iphone because I knew if I did I would lose everything. I needed my phone so I updated it but now I don't know what to do. I am running on 1.1.2 and what should I do. I downloaded your program but now what? Where can I download the old Firmwears?

Comment by dial.operator, Dec 17, 2007

There are links to the old firmware files in the help documentation (available from the Help menu in iNdependence).

Comment by ventro, Dec 17, 2007

So 1.3.1 eliminates the need for Oktoprep? Also, you really should put in a "Install Installer.app" button somewhere.

Comment by dial.operator, Dec 18, 2007

No, there is no need for Oktoprep if you use iNdependence.

With regard to Installer.app, I don't want to start having to maintain versions of 3rd party applications. What happens when a new version of Installer.app comes out and people start asking for it, or when a new firmware comes out which Installer.app is incompatible with? Then people start reporting problems with Installer.app to me thinking that it's my program. It becomes a real tech support nightmare.

The only reason I included anySIM with iNdependence is because it fits with what I'm doing (ie. providing an application which allows you to unlock all of the capabilities of the iPhone without needing a service contract).

If you want Installer.app, then email the Installer.app developers and tell them to release a standalone version which can be installed via the Customize tab in iNdependence. This is exactly why I've made a call out to iPhone application developers to release their apps standalone.

Comment by Santafexcrunner, Dec 18, 2007

does anyone know where I can get an iphone 1.1.1 updater? The one I have is not working at all

Comment by pauburgess, Dec 18, 2007

Does anybody know whether this will work on a iPhone (1.1.2) already activated O2 ?

Comment by yonnermark, Dec 18, 2007

Any news on the reports that this works to unlock a 1.1.2 OTB phone?

Comment by doomsday.cl, Dec 18, 2007

Any confirmation for the 1.1.2 OTB?

Comment by stefan.leitich, Dec 18, 2007

Suggestion for one more FAQ! I am on a by iNdependence activated, jailbroken, anysimed, 1.1.1 iPhone (came with 1.1.1 OTB, US model). Is it save to perform the upgrade to 1.1.2 like described in the iNdependence Help (because of non AT&T SIM)?

Comment by jheems, Dec 18, 2007

Downgrade to 1.1.1 is working OK, then to 1.0.2 stops with iTunes "waiting for iPhone". I tried both Windows and Mac procedures with the same result, on the iPhone you only see the little apple logo and the rotating cursor, nothing happens further. I have the latest OTB 1.1.2 with 4xx bootloader. Any Ideas???

Comment by dipan66, Dec 18, 2007

I have a 1.0 phone upgraded to 1.0.2 and then to 1.1.1. All done with iNdependence and unlocked by iphonesimfree. Will iNdependence be able to handle an ipsf unlocked phone? Will the bundle anysim cause any issues?

Comment by idavid87, Dec 18, 2007

I just tested it. Bad news. Didnt work with my 1.1.2 otb... again, another fake, just wait.

Comment by danososa, Dec 18, 2007

it's a waste of time, i'd the same error as jheems. hope to a soon method.

Comment by Zebcreed, Dec 18, 2007

Your software is fantastic, I was able to get it all up and running with very few problems. I know you want to separate yourself from App.tap but i had a question. I tried to restore to 1.1.1 instead of 1.1.2 on the final step of your instructions so I could use app.tap to no avail so I have this beautifully jailbroken phone with your lovely installation interface and no idea how to get software for the phone. I managed to navigate to the books software and that's been it. I find places that list the packages but can't find the packages themselves. Do you have any advice. Thanks for getting me out of jail.

Comment by jorge.gomez73, Dec 19, 2007

Having problems whit the DFU Mode i have follow the instruction, but everitime i select dfu mode and select the folder i get specific path does not cotains firmware files, and they are there also the zip whit ipsw extension

Comment by oriol.torruella, Dec 19, 2007

I also experienced the same problem as jheems and danososa. The thing is that iphone downgrades to 1.1.1 (and so recognizes independence when connecting again) but does not downgrades to 1.0.2, it stays on "waiting for iphone" status. Would it be possible to downgrade to 1.0.1 and proceed with all steps as with 1.0.2 ??

Comment by internut, Dec 19, 2007

Independence works with OOTB 1.1.2 with bootloader 4.6. Successfully activated and now waiting for Sim Unlock.

Comment by john.katto, Dec 19, 2007

am so grateful for iNdependence, which ave used to unlock so many phones. Am getting a strange thing now though. When I install anySIM, it tells me there's a problem with ssh, yet when I restart the phone it's actually installed. However, anySIM doesn't work. When I uninstall anySIM, again it starts with issue of ssh but then says 'uninstall successful'. What do you think?

Comment by raquiros, Dec 19, 2007

Any chances of having SIM Unlock with iNdependence on OOB 1.1.2 with BL 4.6?

Comment by idavid87, Dec 19, 2007

No i tested already and didnt work... The activation process is great but again we have to wait to use it as a phone

Comment by paul.malam, Dec 19, 2007

Paul UK. Used Independence 1.3 to downgrade to 1.0.2 upgrade back to 1.1.2 then activate, Jailbreak and install SSH on 4 UK 1.1.2OTB based phones all features (except VVM) work well. Phones work with both O2 contract AND O2 "Pay as you Go" SIMs; text, incoming call, outgoing call etc. Not tested data on PAYG SIM but since the complaint from the network was not subscribed to Edge (as expected) I would expect this feature to also work. Independence makes this process easy to do, the most difficult part is getting the phone into DFU/restore mode (with the black screen) ready for the down grade top tip is to hold power key for 1-2 seconds after the screen goes black before letting go (Perhaps I should follow the Independence method for downgrading ;-) I hope this recital provides encouragement to take that step if you are in the UK.

Comment by idavid87, Dec 19, 2007

only in works in the uk?????

Comment by jamal.johnson, Dec 19, 2007

i have the same problem as jheems and danososa. can downgrade to 1.1.1 but not 1.0.2. iTunes just hangs on the 'restore' process saying "Waiting for iPhone..."

Comment by juanbaezz, Dec 19, 2007

same problem..."waiting for iPhone"... downgraded to 1.1.1 but not 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 or 1.0.2

Comment by dial.operator, Dec 19, 2007

ok, for everyone who can downgrade to 1.1.1 but not 1.0.2, can you not just use Safari and go to http://jailbreakme.com to jailbreak it?

After that, you can install SSH, do the Pre Firmware Upgrade, upgrade to 1.1.2, and then jailbreak.

Comment by disclizard, Dec 19, 2007

I successfully downgraded my 1.1.2 OOTB iPhone to 1.1.1 FW, and have gotten all of the functions to work with the exception of the phone capabilities. Is it impossible for me to use my cingular SIM card on this iPhone? I ordered the refurb 4gb last week and just got it today, very new at this, but extremely frustrated. I previously had a RazR if that may shed light on the problems that I am having? I am hitting a brick wall here, HELP!

Comment by nevrozel, Dec 20, 2007

For everybody who want to INSTALL APPTAPP AS A STANDALONE APP, here is what you have to do: - have your phne activated and jailbroken - install SSH - download apptapp installer from their webiste (it is the old one, version 3.1) - then right click on apptapp > show package contents > resources > and there you have the "installer.app" - install it via Independence in your User folder - reboot - there you have it! :)

Comment by cdbrawn, Dec 20, 2007

I have a OOB 1.1.2 that I have been able to downgrade to 1.0.2 and Jailbreak with independence, but after installing SSH and rebooting the phone, the screen locks up at the 2nd "reboot" instruction from Independence. Independence can talk to it via the cable, but the only thing that can be done on the phone is the home & power reset combination. Removing SSH via independence clears the problem (but then I'm stuck at 1.0.2!) Any suggestions for debugging???

Comment by jamal.johnson, Dec 20, 2007

Comment by opera...@dialectro.com, Today (8 hours ago) "ok, for everyone who can downgrade to 1.1.1 but not 1.0.2, can you not just use Safari and go to http://jailbreakme.com to jailbreak it? After that, you can install SSH, do the Pre Firmware Upgrade, upgrade to 1.1.2, and then jailbreak."

I successfully downgraded to 1.1.1 in which i could get no cell service (expected modem error). I then connected to Wi-Fi, went to jailbreakme.com, installed OktoPrep? under Tweaks 1.1.1, UPDATED to 1.1.2 through iTunes, then downloaded and ran http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/site/112jb.html. POOF, it worked wonderfully. Steps are basically listed here: http://www.crunchgear.com/2007/11/19/help-key-how-to-jailbreak-your-ipod-touch-with-112/. Phone is now jailbroken and can use iNdependance etc... Hope this helps!

Comment by Zebcreed, Dec 20, 2007

As to the Apptapp standalone info.............nevrozel, I think I love you!!!!!!!

Comment by dipan66, Dec 20, 2007

I had a 1.0 phone, upgraded to 1.0.2 and unlocked with IPSF, jailborken and activated with iNdependence. Upgraded to 1.1.1 with iNdependence, used jailbreakme.com to install apptapp. After upgrading to 1.1.2 with iNdependence, faced no problems with ipsf unlock, but sms and phone crashed. Finally downloaded installer from the following link : http://download231.mediafire.com/xn51xlgdifkg/2ejed00mz2x/Installer1.1.1.rar, extracted installer.app from the application folder, installed using iNdependence. Then I added the following source to installer: http://cynix.org/iphone.plist, ran tweak 1.1.2 - iworld, followed by more keyboard for 1.1.2 (see a lovely detailed article here : http://www.winandmac.com/mobile/iphone/macfirst-ultimate-guide-unlock-iphone-112/) and then rebooted my phone - voila - I now have a 1.1.2 with perfectly functioning phone and SMS and installer.app running on it! Thanks to the many websites and nevrozel for all the brilliant suggestions and help to get my phone back into form !!

Comment by georgi071, Dec 20, 2007

can i use it to upgrade from an UNLOCKED 1.1.1 iphone SIM card international (non USA) and then will it work ok? the SIM can you please confirm that it will work?

thank you,,

Comment by jrbtempe, Dec 22, 2007

I had mostly given up on jailbreaking my iPhoneSimFree phone using 1.1.1/1.1.2 because my previous attempt with the Dev Team's software made my phone unstable. So, it was back to a stock 1.1.2 until this week. Your software, as always, made the process virtually painless and once I got iWorld installed, all is right with the world again. Keep up the great work!

Comment by darreln, Dec 22, 2007

I had a unlocked (IPSF) 1.1.1. phone jailbroken & ssh, and all that. Followed instructions to upgrade to 1.1.2. via independence. worked well, phone upgraded to 1.1.2 and is activated.

However, i am UNABLE to jailbreak the phone now. I get an error, says that I have to downgrade to 1.0.2 again, that's NOT what the help files said....is there something wrong or do I really have to go down to 1.02. again?

Comment by man25hattan, Dec 23, 2007

finally got my iphone unlocked and working in Spain, was crashing but thanks to nevrozel's tip I could install iWorld.

NEVROZEL, I cannot update AppTapp? or Summerboard because I had them installed before, the installer sees the "old" programs but it doesn't let me uninstall them in order to have them again in the summerboard... anyway to get rid of those files from the system so that I can install again? Independence doesn't see them either unfortunately...

THANKS

Comment by warsies1...@yahoo.com, Dec 24, 2007

my phone's serial number starts with 7U738, will I be able to update it to 1.1.2? I bought it in mid October, I don't know if it was 1.1.2 otb since it was already jailbroken when i bought it. It now runs smoothly on 1.0.2 firmware, should I update it at all since I just want the video-out function?

INdependence doesn't open if my iPhone is connected, if it is disconnected INdependence opens but closes as soon as I plug my iPhone in. What is wrong? My iPhone is currently in Restore mode with the yellow triangle. What can I do?

Comment by rickyherrero, Jan 04, 2008

Application works perfectly, only faced issues when trying to Upgrade after the "Pre Firmware Upgrade", , the phone went into a on/off condition, will turn on and 3 seconds later off and on again, try reseting it and no luck, finally i found this site http://limitededitioniphone.com/cant-restore-iphone-how-to-fix/ where it recommended to delete some files and reintall itunes and worked perfectly. Great software and hopefully soon i will be able to unlock my OTB iphone

Comment by bazazz, Jan 08, 2008

i am getting "Connection failed: Couldn't get baseband version." message (bricked iphone downgraded to 1.0.2).

would you mind allowing non-baseband operations in case the baseband is unusable ?

thanks!

Comment by KevinCoelho84, Jan 11, 2008

I have an iphone version 1.1.1 jailbroken by going to the web jailbreakme.com. I installed iNdependence but at the bottom of the screen where it says your phones information it says my phone is jailed? I just wanted to be able to upgrade my phone to 1.1.2 and jailbreak it. How come it says my phone is jailed when i have installer.app and ssh and all other native apps.

Tried unsuccessfully to download iNdependence v1.3.1 to work with iTune 7.5.Is there an alternate site which I can download from? Thanks.

Comment by katmatui, Jan 16, 2008

BIG problem...

I've seen two other posts about this "waiting for iphone" while tryint to downgrade.

I'm trying to downgrade an iphone product version 1.1.2, Base band Version 04.02.13_G, firmware version iBoot-204.2.9

I've donwloaded the old firmware version 1.0.2 from the web site indicated in INdependence site.

This is where things get a little complicated. I'm running Mac OS 1.5.1 and Independence ask you to use BOMArchiveHelper which now is replaced by Archive Utility.

I got bot files. The firmware and the folder.

The o conect the iphone, open INdependence, go to firmware, enter DFU mode. Wait for the message.

Quit INdependence, open Itunes. It recognizes the iphone, says that I need to restore it. I option click RESTORE, select the firmware package.

Itunes says it is preparing the iPhone... And it freezes on Waiting for iPhone...

I tryed different versions of Mac OS. 10.5.1 and 10.4.11. Itunes 7.4.2 and 7.6 (running Leopard) and itunes 7.5 (running tiger).

EVERY SINGLE TIME I get the same problem.

PLEASE HELP

Comment by ksau...@verizon.net, Jan 17, 2008

I activated my phone using jailbreak last august and is currently @ version 1.0.2. I am using the sim from my previous AT&T phone (business account) and all is well other than visual voice mail. I have no other apps or mods. Can I upgrade using I-Tunes without locking up the phone??? My wife has an iphone also, activated normally with AT&T if I could use somehow. Thanks for the help!!

Comment by ebernal13, Jan 17, 2008

I have a virgin iphone runnin 1.0, how do I jail break this? I am a little confused bc when I try to jail break, the software is asking me for a firmware file.

Comment by emueyau, Jan 18, 2008

Sorry, there is one question left open:

I want to upgrade from 1.0.2 to 1.1.2 and I've done the "virginize" and "pre firmware upgrade", but now I'm supposed to "upgrade" - this will bring me to 1.1.3, right? I don't think I should do that. I've clicked "option-update" instead and have chosen the 1.1.2 file. But independence does not like to activate that, it states I have not done the "pre firmware upgrade".

THANKS for any comments!!!

Comment by katmatui, Jan 19, 2008

Hi Michael,

I managed to activate my 1.1.2 OTB.

What I did was, I activeted it while in 1.0.2 firmware.

Aas a matter of fact I did everything while in firmware version 1.0.2.

everything worked up fine, except AnySim?, and I think the problem is that AnySim? will only work with firmware version 1.1.2 and I CAN'T FIND A PLACE TO DOWNLOAD IT!!!

Where didi you find your version???

Thank

Katma

Comment by katmatui, Jan 19, 2008

Sorry, forgot to explain why I need to download 1.1.2.

You explained the problem in your post.

If anyone does the "pre firmware upgrade" and go to iTunes to have it upgraded, they'll just get the new version 1.1.3

So I think what we need to do is download this 1.1.2 package and then, instead of just let iTunes conect to apple server do the Option (or shift) Update, choosing now the 1.1.2 instead of the 1.0.2

Comment by Dayaasir, Jan 19, 2008

i accidently upgraded to 1.1.3, i have been trying to downgrade, it's leaving me with SIM error. how can i downgrade ? or are you working on it? it is downgrading but it is not activating

Comment by macinstein, Jan 20, 2008

if your independence not working check your itunes version. İt should be 7.5

Comment by giancarlocarriero, Jan 21, 2008

I have a 1.1.1 firmware, jailbroken with Simfree. Is there any incompatibility between this software and Indipendence? May I upgrade firmware to 1.1.2 and then jailbrake with Indipendence? But then, may I find somewhere 1.1.2 upgrade since Itunes gives 1.1.3?

Comment by moiseshn, Jan 21, 2008

@katmatui: I'm having the same problem as you (the eternal "Waiting for iPhone" part), how did you downgrade your OTB 112 to 1.0.2 firmware? ... at least i want to use it as an iPod Touch :-\

Comment by rickyherrero, Jan 21, 2008

Is there any possible way that iNdependance can also write on the Iphone the country specifics by creating the proper .plist file. Something like, using the codes in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Network_Code#International so iNdependance ask to fill the proper MCC and MNC and country and the file is created. This will be amazing as i cant find the iWorld.app on the internet

Comment by mjanich, Jan 21, 2008

Now I'm back on 1.0.2 and the "pre upgrade button" is greyed out.

I understand the "pre upgrade" procedure is setting some symbolic (soft) links on the phone??? Opera..., is there a way to check?

I also have a problem installing ANY installer. The first time I did it my computer hang and I had to reboot (both iphone and mac), now, multiple install/delete go nowhere...

More questions to Opera...: Can I copy some applications from 1.1.3 to another OS phone to get some of the functions? Like the maps or the music player (I REALLYNEED the lyrics!).

THANKS SO MUCH EVERY BODY!

I have almost the same error as : Comment by darreln, Dec 22, 2007

I had a unlocked (IPSF) 1.0.1. phone jailbroken & ssh, and all that. Followed instructions to upgrade to 1.1.1. and then to 1.1.2 via independence. worked well, phone upgraded to 1.1.2. But the phone is now de-activated and am unable to re-activate it. I get an error, says that I have to downgrade to 1.0.2 again, that's NOT what the help files said....is there something wrong or do I really have to go down to 1.02. again?

Comment by sibrindley, Jan 23, 2008

Thank you for this fantastic software. Very useful for doing the repetitive tasks over and over. I bought a UK iPhone yesterday (new bootloader of course, and 1.1.2 OTB). I am very pleased to now have it jailbroken and activated on 1.1.2 thanks to iNdependance.

I have one comment though: the step that really confounded me for a long time was the final update to 1.1.2 because 1.1.3 is currently offered by iTunes. I had the .ipsw file downloaded but using Option-Restore undoes all the work (obvious to me now). As other comments are pointing out, the answer is to Option-click the Update button and then you can perform an UPGRADE to the firmware of your choice (1.1.2). All makes sense now I've done it :)

Could you update that last step in the Help please because it tells you to Update/Upgrade NOT restore, whereas our gut instinct tells us NO - don't upgrade to the offered 1.1.3! It needs to clarify that you can choose the Update file.

Comment by rock...@compuserve.com, Jan 25, 2008

Unforttunately I did not receive any answer in issues, therefore I'm trying it here because I would like to upgrade to 1.1.3 and need to install app.tap Bought an iphone in the States, it was still 1.02. Upgraded to 1.1.1 and than used iNdependence 1.25 and anySim 1.1 After the second try everything (youTube, Bluetooth, Wifi, Battery lasts long, etc.) worked. I removed anySim and installed Fugu. Exchanged the M68AP.plist (using phone in germany), the calendar changed, suddenly I had contacts next to itune and some words are in german. Have not installed any other programm yet

I want to install Installer in issues it says there is a problem between iNdipence 1.2.5 and app. tapp and to remove one SSH
So do I have to use iNdependence 1.2.5 if I want to work on my phone or can I use 1.3.1? Is there a difference in using iNdependence 1.2.5 or 1.3.1 concerning SSH? In iNdependence 1.3.1, I can remove SSH, SFTP and SCP. Should I do that that before installing installer app. and how can I check that it got deinstalled? Do I need SFTP and/or SCP or does both get installed once I install Installer.app?

Comment by nowherem...@yahoo.com, Jan 26, 2008

Yes thanks for an awesome program! But as sibrindley suggests, please change the help to indicate that when you are using iTunes to upgrade you can press alt+upgrade and select an upgrade file from your hard drive (iPhone1,1_1.1.2_3B48b_Restore.ipsw) instead of having to upgrade to 1.1.3 or any newer firmware that comes out which is no good and a restore is also no good.

Please also explain, why and when the "install pre upgrade" is greyed out. Could there be a "verify pre upgarde" to check if the pre upgrade (I understand some symbolic links) are in place correctly?

THANKS SO MUCH!!

Hi,

you state in the manual "Please note that if you have used anySIM 1.0 or other older free SIM unlocking solutions (anything except anySIM 1.1/1.2 and iPhoneSimFree) to SIM unlock your phone, and you upgrade to 1.1.x, it will wipe out the SIM unlock and render the phone and text message part of your phone inoperable. Everything else will work though."

I was under the impression, that "virginize" will allow me to upgrade my unlocked 1.0.1/2 phone!? Is it true?

Here is what I did:

1.0.1 phone: activate, jailbreak, unlock with anysim 1.0: OK virginize, unlock with anysim 1.2.1u: OK works pre-upgrade: OK UPDATE with iTunes using the iPhone1,1_1.1.2_3B48b_Restore.ipsw file, md5sum 8337fa372a6a629d38856f3ed40beeff, phone hangs in "restore" mode, after a few reboots of both phone and computer I got iNdependence to get it out. activate says "you did not install the pre-patch, pls downgrade to 1.02"

I repeated 3-4 times, starting with Desktop/iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw (md5sum d695eb755b7c7c004850c858afdd88ca), active, jailbreak, ssh, pre-upgrade, iTunes update (with above file): same result.

I tried to restore 1.1.1 to the phone and tried the "#307#" method: I can jailbreak, get installer, everything, except anySim: all versions (1.1, 1.2.1u) say "I cannot anysim this phone.".

Did I use the right update file?

Any comments on errors or things I could try. I really NEED the lyrics support!!!

THANKS SO MUCH! Keep up the great work!

I had a 1.0.2 jailbroken iPhone using App Tapp. It crashed and I had to restore. iTunes forced me to go to 1.1.3 (before I knew about the + Click? on the Restore button.

I took the upgrade but was not able to downgrade to 1.1.1 because I had never dowloaded it when it first came out. I tried using the link posted on iNdependence How To and it downloads the file but I can never find the 1.1.1 psw file during the DFU mode.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? -vERBz-

Hello. I have an iPhone 1.1.2 ootb and I tried to unlock it. Made a downgrade to 1.1.1 and tried to follow the steps to jailbreak it --> #307# etc. but my screen freezes after a short while and it takes an hour to wake up. Then if I enter the contact and urls it mostly freezes when it should connect to our W-LAN :-( ... what can I do to fix this freezing-touchscreen problem ? Cheers, Eik

Comment by nowherem...@yahoo.com, Feb 04, 2008
ve...@optonline.net, you can simply follw these instructions for downgrading your iphone:

http://hadi.wordpress.com/2008/01/18/unbrick-your-updated-113/

Go through the help file that is built in to the independence menu bar at the top of the screen. Certain points of the procedure you must have independence pointing to the firmware folder (where you uncompress zipped it) other points of the procedure you must have the .psw firmware file.

Good Luck, Nowhereman.

Comment by nowherem...@yahoo.com, Feb 04, 2008

Hi mjanich,

You must go from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 then 1.1.2 follow the help file built in to independence's menu bar (at the top of the screen).

Click on "Using iNdependence

Overview of the interface and how to use it"

Then scroll to the bottom of this page and follow the "If you are using firmware 1.1.1 or higher, see this page for information" link

It will walk you through the whole process.

Good luck, Nowhereman

Guys,

For all of you who are or were stuck with the waiting for iphone message... You can still revert to a functioning iPod touch by restoring firmware 1.1 instead of 1.0.2 and then using the Jailbreak me app.

At least you'll have something functional ! I tried it works ;-)

Good luck

Hey,

The software worked brilliantly. I'm now on 1.1.1. using independence. My only problem is I am trying to upgrade now to 1.1.2 following the instructions but the pre firmware upgrade button is greyed out. Everything is turned on that should be (ie ssh, etc). Can anyone shed some light on this for me???

Hi Ised Independence and upgraded to 1.1.2 but the installer disappeared, how can I solve it?

Comment by neffprim...@hotmail.com, Feb 11, 2008

Hey,

first of all, thanks so much for your effort and brilliant software @ operator@dialectro.com

My iphone runned perfectly, was upgraded to 1.1.3., everything was fine, but then after installing a third party software (ToDoList?) the phone crashed completely. Screen was locked in stage, couldn´t do anything. Restore didn´t work and so on, i relly tried everything. However, i ended up with restoring it via iTunes and "unfortunatly" the phone is now locked with 1.1.3. und newest bootloader 4.06. Big Crap. Anyhow, i downgradet to 1.0.1 with software restore, but phone is still locked and traped in recovery mode due to the bootloader as far as i understand it.

Please get iNdependence working with 1.1.3. i need to kick the phone out of the recovery mode.

Is there any other way to do that??

thx for any help, cheers

I stacked with "waiting for iphone" today too. Firmware 1.1.2, Latest iTunes on MacOS X 10.4.11. Leave for all night with it - will check at morning :).

I followed instruction and used iNdependence beta, but...

Comment by drkblde, Feb 15, 2008

Ok not asking you to do all the work, but i have a jailbroken 1.1.3 thanks to you guys. Now where do you find standalone apps to install. I keep getting "Main Script execution failed!" when i try to use installer and want to just do it manually, but i cant find any apps out there by themselves. You mentioned you wished there were more, any idea where to find some? Or have you found a fix for installer in the terminal or something?

Comment by corytabino, Feb 16, 2008
Will INdependence work with an OTB 1.1.3 iphone? I tried it on my 10.4.11 mac OS X. Downgraded to itunes 7.4.2, but cannot get it to restore to 1.1.1 It says sucessfully copied mobile device network into library but then INdependence doesn't load up, just says: error registering from callbacks to iphone. Have been on this for two weeks and am pulling my hair out.

Comment by john.cha...@fusion.com.au, Feb 21, 2008

for those with the "waiting for iphone" issue on some iphones 1.1.2 OTB. I had this problem and could not jailbreak my iphone. I seemed to have fixed mine and have simm/jailbroken up to 1.1.3.

I was reading help of Independance and the process for a 1.1.3 OTB... so... Instead of downgrading to 1.0.2. I let itunes update the phone to 1.1.3. Then i followed their procedure and got it working including inbuilt "SIMM Unlock" I did this on 2 phones.

The only issue i had was one each phone it took 2-3x trying for the SIMM Unlock to actually work. if the iPhone stays at the SpringBoard? and does not reboot within 30 seconds, then you need to close iNdependence (most likely force quit). You may notice it seem to work but then wireless is "greyed out" If this happens - re do it. eventually it will and will get a heap of code running on the screen of the iphone.

good luck.

I am getting the error message " Error registering for callbacks from iphone" when trying to load independence.

What is this?

Comment by ttse7en2, Feb 22, 2008

Ok I fixed this error message by deleting the privatemobileframeworks folder in the system/library then reinstalled itunes.

Comment by truckstop1900, Feb 28, 2008

Error creating RAM disk could be that the firmware file was corrupted or not downloaded. Go into your library and delete it and then try again.

iNdependence uses the standard iTunes location in the library to get its firmware file and it is using firmware 1.1.2

Error writing modified Services.plist to phone ? I got his error message from iNdependence. Was trying to upgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 via 1.0.2 downgrade. The downgrade itself went fine, but activation by iNdependence fails as trying to locate the firmware. Now I'm stuck with unactivated phone, iTunes 7.6.1 won't do thing. Can anyone please help ?

Comment by eddrobinson, Feb 29, 2008

Hi, Can someone confirm something.

According to the homepage :

...I do not feel comfortable downgrading the bootloader from iNdependence because, if things go wrong, you will end up with a permanently bricked phone. I'd rather have people missing out on the Google Maps Locate Me feature than risk having that happen to people.

However, I thought it was impossible to downgrade the baseband from >= 4.03.13G to a patched 4.02.13G if you had a 4.6BL? Therefore, how does the simunlock process work if, like me, you have 1.1.3FW, 4.03.13G BB and 4.6BL.

I would love to get my phone activated properly but don't want to touch the bootloader. I use an o2 sim (same as official carrier) but the 4.03.13G wont allow same carrier sim's unless they are the iphone contract ones :-(

I have a 1.0.2 iPhone, and want to update it. Its unlocked, i used the original unlock method, i think it was with iUnlock. What can I do, I just want to find a guide to update...I do not want to have to reviginize, update, downgrade, shift-click, spin three times, and do a back-flip. Am I just way off, or can i update and unlock using Jailbreak 1.4.5?

Same here, I have a 1.1.1, updated through independence to 1.1.4 and http://jailbreakme.com/ it's not installing installer, this could be a problem with independence or installer ?

Thanks

Comment by rperci...@scarynet.net, Mar 03, 2008

jailbreakme.com takes advantage of a MobileSafar? vuln that is patched after 1.1.1 so it can't install Installer.app on anything later. See the Known Issues page and my post above for step by step instructions to install Installer.app on later versions of the firmware.

Comment by aaron.eiche, Mar 05, 2008

For anyone having difficulty with Activation in 1.02 "Error writing modified Services.plist to phone". I don't have an answer, but I went ahead and upgraded to 1.1.4 and went through the Activate/Jailbreak process just fine. It wasn't clear that you could just upgrade (previous techniques required a downgrade, but going up to 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 is apparently far easier.)

So if you don't mind going up to 1.1.4, just click on the restore button without holding down option, upgrade to 1.1.4, and run iNdependence as the instructions read in the help file.

If I do a restore again: a) ¿Do I have to unlock it again? b)¿Can the modem be restored back to version 04.04.13_G?, I want to develop with the SDK and want to use the locate features that is on Google map but I am on a older boot loader.

i currently use a jailbroken 1.1.2 iphone. i want to be jailbroken in 1.1.4...how should i go about this?

Comment by cpliske, Jun 09, 2008

I ran INdependence 1.4 Beta5 to Jailbreak and Unlock, but now the new (non-beta) version of INdependence has a "SIM Unlock Phone" button, implying that my phone is not unlocked. My firmware is 1.1.4 and the Baseband is reported to be 04.04.05_G. All works fine, including the unlock, but I'm concerned about applying the 2.0 update. I don't seem to be able to re-lock because INdependence won't let me without unlocking again. This redundant step seems unnecessary and dangerous! I would either like to figure out how to relock, or understand that I'm unlikely to brick my iPhone when I try to upgrade! Thanks!
