Some background information on iDemocracy

About

iDemocracy is the first Windows GUI application that mostly automates the process of jailbreaking and installing 3rd party apps on your iPhone, version 1.1.1. iDemocracy is open-source software written in C# by Drakenza.

Update: We made it onto Google News! Yesssss!!

Notes

iDemocracy is currently at version 1.1 (it was updated to fix a number of bugs). It has been tested on Windows Vista and will likely work on Windows XP. Under Vista, it's probably a good idea to run it with Admin privileges.

iDemocracy 2.0 is on the way. More information can be found on the iDemocracy2, ChangeLog, and Announcements Wiki Pages. The release date is November 16th, 6PM. It will include a number of new features as well as many bug fixes.

At present, it is only designed for iPhone firmware version 1.1.1, though it work just fine on earlier versions. There are no guarantees for later versions.

To run, it's as simple as running iDemocracy.exe and following the on-screen instructions. The maximum user interaction is required at the beginning to downgrade the iPhone, and throughout the process, mainly to reboot the iPhone. This software does, however, remove the need for a lot of command-line interface knowledge, and brings the process of a 1.1.1 jailbreak to people not so computer-savvy.

If you have problems with Installer.app not working properly or showing packages that don't exist, or refusing to update to 3.0, grab the Installer.app Fix from the Downloads page and run it with your iPhone connected to your computer.

Activation / Unlocking

As of version 1.1, unlocking is supported on iDemocracy using anySIM. iDemocracy can now upload anySIM to your iPhone and delete it once you're done with it. Activation can be accomplished with iDemocracy Activator 1.3. This will be built into iDemocracy 2.0.

We've finally set up PayPal, and we could really use the money. So if you've got a couple of dollars lying around and you're willing to help out a developer like me, please Donate. I really appreciate it!

Will there be a iDemocracy supporting IPhones firmware version 1.0.2? Or is there a way to update from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 and use it then?

Thanks a lot, Roger Ineichen

Comment by iDemocracy, Oct 22, 2007

iDemocracy is designed to guide the user through updating from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 while jailbreaking and installing 3rd party apps. Just follow the instructions with a 1.0.2 phone the same way you would with a 1.1.1 phone.

Comment by roger.ineichen, Oct 22, 2007

Sounds good, but then can you remove the Note above?

At present, it is only designed for iPhone firmware version 1.1.1. Do not attempt to use it on a later or earlier version of iPhone firmware.

regards Roger

Just to clarify, does iDemocracy 1.1.1 work on a newly purchased 1.0.2 version iPhone?

Comment by stefan.camenisch, Oct 23, 2007

Great work, congratulations. One small question please (basically same as horaceh): I will get an iPhone next week straight from the box with 1.0.2 firmware. Can I just leave out the first steps of downgrading to 1.0.2 (as mine is already there) and just step in after?

Thanks, Stefan

The main question is .... Do you need wifi in order to use this?

Comment by iDemocracy, Oct 23, 2007

You can jailbreak without wifi but you need it for the ssh access to install 3rd party apps.

Comment by gr...@hotmail.com, Oct 23, 2007

Thanks for your hard work!

To be clear, is the iDemocracy app assuming the phone is already activated? I see that you just released an Activator/Youtube fix. Does this mean if I have a completely new straight out of the box iPhone (w/ 1.1.1 fw) and a NON AT&T sim card, I run the ActivatorYouTubeFixer?.zip first (to activate)? And then follow that with the iDemocracy app (to jailbreak and unlock for other networks)?

THanks again

One more question, what version of iTunes is required? Thanks!

Comment by iDemocracy, Oct 23, 2007

You need the latest version of iTunes for the best results (i.e. 7.4). If you have a non AT&T sim, yes, you'll need the activator and you'll need anySIM to unlock. The Activator is untested, so you might want to hang on until that is confirmed, or if you test it yourself please tell me how it goes. After you've activated, yes, go alone with iDemocracy as planned, and whenever required, activate again.

I have an un-activated phone. I tried using ibrick and anysim, it activates the phone but does not unlock it to all networks. ANysim at the end, does not give message unlock successful message. I have restored to original v 1.1.1 which is unactivated. I tried using idemocracy and 1st time at the last step of fix360 it gave me error like simlink is removed or something and when i tried again, putty is not connecting to iphone.

How can I connect an unactivated iphone to network? It keeps connected and when i restart it 3 times in step 3 it gives error.

Can some 1 give detail instructions?

thanks apurva

Comment by markushuebner, Oct 24, 2007

Just a feedback from a user: After reupdating back to 1.1.1 the activation no longer worked with pacay. Problems with idemocracy: - no activation - install of BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH didn't work - Symlink didn't work -> SSH access only manual via putty possible

Any idea when this will be fixed?

Comment by gyn.luciano, Oct 24, 2007

hi, could be a tutorial for using the same, because apparently, very easy to use, but for laity and half q complicated.

Comment by gyn.luciano, Oct 24, 2007

I am with two iphones to the release, and the same all 1.1.1.

And I totally lost.

Could be a step by step with images.

I have a 1.0.2 iPhone which has been unlocked, jailbroken and modded by iPhone sim free v1.6. Is it absolutely safe for me to use the iDemocracy program so that I can upgrade to 1.1.1? If the above is not possible, what are my options? I am a Windows Vista / XP user.

And if the above has not been addressed yet, iDemocracy 1.2 should have the answer to this question

Comment by raj.thevar, Nov 06, 2007

I assume that iD2 must be on the verge of release. But t would be great if it could counter-attack 1.1.2(launching this Friday) and iTunes 7.5(already up and running on apple.com).

Having said that, there are still users running previous firmwares like 1.0.2 and 1.0.1 that are unlocked by simfree. Will iD2 take care of them and help them virginize, upgrade and jailbreak?

Comment by iDemocracy, Nov 06, 2007

raj.thevar: Yes, iD2 is very nearly completed and is almost into the testing stages. An announcement is due sometime today which will answer some of your questions. It will be releasing sometime after this friday, of course, so if a method is devised for 1.1.2, i might be able to incorporate it in time or release an update... please stay tuned, all of you. Your prayers will be answered :)

Comment by iDemocracy, Nov 17, 2007

You don't install iD2... you download the RAR file, unRar it, then navigate to the Debug folder and run "iDemocracy.exe"
