How to install the HP calculator on your iPhone

Prerequisite

Until Apple releases a software development kit to enable 3rd parties to "officially" write apps for the iPhone, you'll need to jailbreak your iPhone. See here for instructions.

Installation

The easiest method of installing is with Installer.app:

  1. Launch Installer.app on your phone.
  2. Tap the Sources tab at the bottom.
  3. Tap the Edit button at the top.
  4. Tap the Add button at the top.
  5. Enter the following url: http://snipurl.com/hpcalc
  6. Click OK.
  7. Go to the Install tab and scroll down to Utilities.
  8. In the Utilities section, you should see HP-11C, -12C, -15C, and -16C. Select one and tap Install.

Great! Any chance of having the 41c emulator any time soon? I will buy an iphone when that comes out.

Comment by Michael.Barrett.Andersen, Mar 27, 2008

I installed both the 12C and 15C but both 'disappeared' during an upgrade from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 and now can neither be installed or found for uninstallation. (I seem to remember a script error from trying to install something else.)

Comment by j...@lundschen.com, Jul 11, 2008

Will you submit this product to the App Store?

Comment by raycronise, Jul 13, 2008

any updates? This is a MUST have for me

Comment by royleeengland, Jul 13, 2008

Please put this on the App Store! I don't want to crack my iPhone to get this app.

Comment by jchuston, Jul 14, 2008

please get this to the app store...as an engineer, and a longtime HP calculator user, I really would love to have the ability to do RPN input...

Comment by nocostloan, Jul 15, 2008

please add this to the app store! a new HP 12c is approx 75.00... i'll gladly pay a few bucks to easily add it to my iphone! thanks

Comment by ScottDMcfarland, Jul 21, 2008

PLEASE, do you have a version of HP 12c .app ready for v2.0 we can download and ssh to /Applications while you are working on the release for iTunes ??? There is nothing out there ... THANKS A LOT !!!

Comment by doug.gravino, Jul 21, 2008

Just to add to what everyone else is saying, please consider putting this on the iPhone app store (even if you have to take out the HP-12C logo for trademark reasons). I'd gladly pay for the app! The version that ran on the 1.x jailbroken iPhones was really great and I'd love to be able to get it on a non-jailbroken 2.0 phone.

Comment by appledogx, Jul 23, 2008

Just a second to what others are saying. I really need this app on 2.0, AppStore?, Cydia or whatever. Please :-)

Comment by andrew.flanagan, Jul 28, 2008

Would love it also? if this was made available via Cydia or AppStore?. Charge $.99 for it! I'll gladly pay...

Comment by viridusinc, Aug 03, 2008

Would love to see this in the App Store too, but I imagine they would reject it on trademark infringement...

Comment by mgfrei, Aug 03, 2008

is it possible to get this on iPhone 2.0

Comment by Seamus.Hatch, Aug 05, 2008

Same as everyone else, I'd willingly pay for this at the app store.

Comment by angrypony, Aug 07, 2008

I agree. Remove any reference to HP and make this application available in the App Store. You can easily charge $5 for it.

Comment by Carina37, Aug 11, 2008

Can you get it on the iPhone using Cydia?

Comment by BGilliard, Aug 17, 2008

is this app compatible with iphone first gen, 2.0 ? Installer 4?

Comment by juliordz2000, Aug 20, 2008

Great applications! Love those HP's, since my HP-38 circa 1982. I would love this application for iPhone 2.0!

Comment by blakechattaway, Aug 20, 2008

Love this calculator!! Loved this app!! Saw one (an HP 12 knock off called Calculator12) on iTunes for $19.99… and at that price it is missing the bond functions, et al. Can't see spending that much for such an inferior product. Your version is AWESOME! Please put it up at the iTunes app store & let us send you money!!

Comment by Olof.Johnson, Aug 27, 2008

I will pay for an HP15C emulator from the iPhone App store. Please release it under the 2.0 software and make it available in the App store for those of us who don't want to jailbreak

Comment by a...@chillercity.com, Aug 30, 2008

Same as everyone else. I had this on my phone with Jailbreak and it was awesome! I moved on though and there are too many problems with the 2.0 version of Jailbreak. This was the first app I went looking for in the App store, and so far the only one I would pay for! Please call it something else, do what you have to to get it available, a lot of people want it and will pay for it. I don't know that HP really cares if you emulate their 20 year old calculators, hard to say, but I haven't seen them complain about the ones out there for the computer. If Apple won't take it please update everyone as to whey so we can quit adding these comments!

Comment by bouldin.charles, Sep 09, 2008

Yes, please see if you can get this on the App store. There is "i41cXP" which is a beautiful emulation of the 41c, so the trademark issues don't seem to be a show stopper...

Comment by stephen.fleming, Sep 28, 2008

Another vote in favor of an App Store version... I've already paid for two RPN calculators there, but I won't hesitate to pay for this one, too!

Comment by DrBobDrake, Nov 11, 2008

The update claimed to allow clicks to be turned off and to make a selection of larger keys possible, but tapping on the logo just flips to the "back" of the calculator. How do you access the menu?

Comment by dlyons, Dec 07, 2008

so, I just bought an iphone 3g (2.2 loaded) - can I use these hp calculators or not. I'm afraid I don't have a good understanding from what I read above?

if not what is the best RPN calculator that will run on the latest equipment/software?

Comment by jllg2000, Dec 10, 2008

It's not working... I can't download from my iphone.

Comment by devilhan, Dec 16, 2008

Simply awesome!

Comment by henri.revet, Jan 19, 2009

How do we get an answer (if any) to dlyons comment Dec 07, 2008 about 3G ? Also, the link in "Prerequisite" seams broken.

Comment by l...@longtin.org, Feb 03, 2009

Got all the way through step 7. Upon step 8, it says:

?

Comment by dondanz, Feb 20, 2009

Another here willing to buy this through the app store if you can ever get it on there. I've read that it can be a pain, but reading here and around the web there is a significant monetary reward for you doing so.

Comment by travel...@mindspring.com, Mar 21, 2009

I'd put it on the store if I was asked to..I just dont wantt to be asked to pay a reward for doing it...

Comment by tomfors, Mar 21, 2009

The apps are avaliable in the AppStore? under the names FIN-12C, SCI-15C, PRG-16C, and SCI-11C.

Due to licensing issues, however, they are not free.

Comment by lolivierlol, Jun 21, 2009

It seems doesn't working with iPhone OS 3.0 ! Does anybody try on OS 3.0 ?

For me it doesn't work any longer now !

Comment by tomfors, Jun 21, 2009

lolivierlol,

What version and which app do you have installed? Can you describe in a little more detail what exactly is happening and where it is failing?

Thanks --Tom

Comment by clumsargis, Jun 21, 2009

Does not work for me either using iPhone OS 3.0. I installed 2.0.2 from Cydia. The splash screen starts up, stays a second and then quits. I just tried to install it from Icy as well. No dice. Hopefully this is not a big problem as I am addicted to HP calculators. I have the HP 15C on my desktop for my primary calculator. Apple has a new RPN calculator as part of 3.0, but it is not as good nor does it have all the features.

Thanks,

Chris--

Comment by lolivierlol, Jun 21, 2009

tomfors, I am exactly in the same case than clumsargis. iPhone 3G with 3.0. I tried to install hpcalc 2.0.2 from Cydia (start with screen HP and quits) and after with Icy. No success in the both case. Thanks

I see that HP now offers "official" versions of your products. They seem very similar - even the logo and the price. Are these just the new versions of your code?

I own 3 or 4 TI calculators - but really miss my HPs and eager to get it on my iphone 3G

Comment by tomfors, Jun 24, 2009

Hi jock.christie,

I've only played with their versions briefly. As far as I can tell, their code is likely different. Although they carry the official HP name, it appears they were actually created by a company called Mobile Data Force.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to perform any automated unit-tests on their code as I can with mine, so I can't thoroughly test for regressions. But I wouldn't expect HP to put their name on it if they weren't confident in the results it gave.

There are also some slight cosmetic differences, and I have noticed that their 15c appears to ignore flag 9 which causes the display to blink on the real calculator. They also don't appear to perform the original ON/ key tests, but these are all minor issues.

A more significant difference is when holding the phone in portrait orientation, you get essentially a basic 4-function RPN calculator whereas mine only offer a full-function landscape orientation. They also appear to only offer the smaller style keys.

One nice feature is they include a pdf manual. You can, of course, find the 12c and 15c pdf manuals separately on-line though, and I do plan to address the lack of a manual in my versions in a future update.

I personally believe my versions are a bit more "polished" but of course, I'm biased :)

Comment by zjunkforward, Aug 24, 2009

Hi Tom,

loaded the directory and attempted to run the hp15c program, but it crashed with not being able to find the libcrypto.0.9.7.dylib file. My 3gs iPhone has libcrypto.0.9.8 so I created a symbolic link and passed that issue, but now it tells me that it can not find the image for /System/Library/Frameworks/LayerKit?.framework/LayerKit?.

If this doesn't work, I will have to resort to more extreme measures and actually purchase the program.

Thanks

Mark

Comment by nick.grego, Sep 12, 2009

Tom - thanks so much for writing these! I'm hooked on RPN calculators and can't bear to use anything but. I installed your app by copying it to my Applications folder using the iphone browser application and was excited to see the icon on my applications list -- only to be disappointed when I tried to run it and see that the splash screen appears briefly before the app quits. I would be happy to help debug this with you - I just downloaded it a few minutes ago, and its the hp12c-1.0.6.zip version. Please let me know if I can provide any helpful information for you. - Nick
