Host GWT on the server for clients unable or unwilling to run Javascript. Like GWT-HTML but simulating the browser on the server to support user JS. GWTS also assumes GWTS is very much a second to the original GWT application so aims to require as few changes as possible.
... and yes it is very strange to compile Java into Javascript then run in the JVM.
