If I've edited the file since the last save, then it seems to be guaranteed or almost guaranteed that the text will fail to be copied to the clipboard. * If I have multiple files open, and saving the current file still doesn't lead to successful copying to clipboard, then first saving every file in the current window may help. * Sometimes even that doesn't work, even after I try repeatedly, and the only way to continue working with the file is to open it in another program. (This is frustrating as there are features in gwrite that I like to use.)
