Any estimate on when Dart will be supported by app engine? Even if rudimentary, but pushable to appspot?
ye...@gmail.com <ye...@gmail.com> #4
You can run Java bytecode on App Engine (and therefore Scala, JRuby, Jython, etc), so you can try using http://code.google.com/p/jdart/ . But I haven't tried it myself, so I don't know how straightforward it is.
fi...@gmail.com <fi...@gmail.com> #5
That project is out dated by this point and no longer reflects the current state of dart. A native google integration would be best.

Agreed a Dart/JVM hack is not interesting.
There existed many server-side javascript implementations before node.js made JavaScript on the server a good experience.

Hopefully we will see server-side JavaScript (ie Node.js) on AppEngine before DART. That will at least enable compiled-to-JavaScript Dart to run (and make lots of Node.JS developers happy)
ej...@gmail.com <ej...@gmail.com> #8
You can already do server side JavaScript on AppEngine using RingoJS (http://ringojs.org/wiki/Google_App_Engine ). And AppEngineJS (https://github.com/ullisenmedia/appengine ). This is what I'm currently using.

Of course, the real fun will begin when we one day have the real Dart VM running on Google App Engine.

Please add dart VM do App Engine

Dart is now in 1.0 version, so please add dart in a serverside language for App Engine.

Dart is not version 1.0 but rather milestone 1 (M1) which, by their own admission, is approximately version 0.1.0. While the language is stabilized, the libraries are not. M1 does not, unfortunately, mean version 1.0

I'd prefer to see Google offer their own Dart dedicated back-end hosting service, along the lines of what we see now available from other vendors and nodejs. On top of that, if google really wants to dominate, they should offer a version of angular written in dart for for the front end. Add the ability to host mongo or couch db and nothing could touch it and that would be some serious juju if you ask me. Having the killer recipe for both the back end and front ends, all in dart would definitely grab my attention and my focus. Can I see this in my lifetime?
[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #16
Looking forward to a native Dart backend on App Engine!

I too am really looking forward to Dart support for Google App Engine. In the meantime, I recommend using Heroku.
ri...@leapbeyond.com <ri...@leapbeyond.com> #19
As of the date I write this...
The jdart project suggested in comment #4 is outdated (see comment #5 )
The RingoJS link in comment #8 doesn't work (try http://ringojs.org/documentation/google_appengine instead)
AppengineJs in #8 sounds neat, but if you follow the link and click on the Examples, you get Japanese 404 errors.
Heroku is shiny, but it ain't AppEngine.
C'mon Google, let's build Dart a cozy home in AppEngine!

Google, please add Dart VM support on GAE. That would make a great platform to build next generation apps.

Really!? All that push for Dart at I/O and it's not even officially supported on App-Engine? That is shocking. Google, what are you thinking?
ra...@gmail.com <ra...@gmail.com> #34
So if we want to transition to Google App Engine, we have to start with an older tech then later do a full migration to Dart (if it's ever supported)?! Wow.
mi...@rainabba.me <mi...@rainabba.me> #35
Yeah, that is incredibly surprising. Google, comment?

Dart has yet to reach 1.0. The goal of Dart at this point (for 1.0) is fully flushing out the client-side (browser) portion of the language. After 1.0 is hit, they will be working on getting the DartVM into Chrome. Now somepoint after that they will start putting a heavier focus on the server-side of things, which will then open the doors for Dart being added as a supported language for GAE.
Please, stop posting on here unless you have something real to add to the bug. Dart is not ready for GAE yet, especially with the language's focus being on the browser right now.

"Please, stop posting on here unless you have something real to add to the bug. Dart is not ready for GAE yet, especially with the language's focus being on the browser right now."
Perhaps you should read the "bug". What I see is, "Please add server-side support for the Dart programming language." Voting and commenting here is a way of indicating agreement/support. Lose the soap-box already. All you're doing is spamming up the issue.
Anyway, I spent 3 days at I/O learning about Dart and watching it get promoted. For Google to do that without it being available on their enterprise platform is odd and no amount of explaining will change that. As a developer looking for a next-generation platform for new projects, I'm extremely disappointed to find that all the excitement is for nothing. I didn't spend serious money to go to I/O only to learn about tech that I can't use [in a supported manner]. I invested that money in Google and my business to learn about new technology that would provide solutions to my businesses needs. As such, I have as much right as anyone to voice my opinion. Even if you COULD say the same (which i'm doubtful of considering your childish attitude), you still are out of line trying to tell anyone to "stop posting".

The best way to show your interest in this feature is by staring it at the top of the page. As we've done on the other language feature requests I'm going to close this issue for comments outside of project committers.
