Hey Nicolas, great work!

Comment by LiquidSh...@gmail.com, Sep 13, 2009

Wow, these are great! Thanks for making these available.

Hi,

Nice icons set.

Could I request that you provide some sort of attribution / link for the icons you have derived from http://www.sjjb.co.uk/mapicons/SJJBMapIconsv0.03/recoloured/

Many thanks, --

Brian Quinion

@twain47 :

Hello

Of course, I think it lacked that badly. Your work helped a lot, and thank you for releasing it freely.

I tried to provide attribution, not sure if it's what you excepted so you can correct me if I am wrong :

The License now has "Many icons are derived from the project SJJBMapIcons by SJJB Management, licensed under Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication." http://code.google.com/p/google-maps-icons/wiki/License

Wiki pages like Education will have "Made by SJJB Management : nursery" http://code.google.com/p/google-maps-icons/wiki/EducationIcons

Sorry for not putting it clearly sooner. Regards, -- Nico Mollet

@nico.mollet:

Cheers - They are PD so there is no actual requirement anyway, just wondered if you were willing.

A general comment is fine - no need to spend the time on labelling every one individually, besides quite a few are themselves derived from PD sources so I don't want to claim I drew them, only complied them and made them consistent. Linking to http://www.sjjb.co.uk/mapicons/ might make more sense - and I'll get a proper landing page in place shortly.

Many thanks.

On a related question, do you mind me using your ideas as inspiration for some extra SVG icons? I'll be redrawing them because I need them SVG and PD, but some of the ideas would help with some icons I'm stuck on.

Cheers, --

Brian

Brian,

Good enough you don't want that I label every icon derived from your work.... because I was checking again your icons and I used a lot of them.

Alright then, I changed the link to your future landing page.

do you mind me using your ideas as inspiration for some extra SVG icons?

Not at all, I think our 2 projects have the same goal and of course do as you wish. My project is CC by SA, but if your redraw them, it shouldn't matter.

On another subject, I am on my way to stop static files and start generating PNGs dynamicly with PHP. Now that I see your project again, I may think twice and look at SVG again. I see you can generate them dynamicly too with different backgrounds and all.

The only thing is I thought SVG was not very accurate at small sizes (20x20) and I found myself "redrawning" the png to add sharpness. Is their a solution for that problem ?

The sharpness is an issue, although I think I prefer a softer/more anti-aliased look anyway. I often spend quite a bit of time moving lines back and forth by fractions of a pixel to get the small sizes to work and even then there are still problems.

I've recently started experimenting with hinting (ask TTF) by using style sheets to turn elements on/off at different sizes. It shows promise but is still very experimental and a lot of work.

Another possibility is to actually create them as a true type font, but I've not progressed with that at all yet.

Would it be possible to get these markers in 64x64? I would be willing to make a contribution if I could.

Comment by maximill...@gmail.com, Apr 24, 2010

Can you make the major international flag icons please?

Comment by project member matthias...@gmail.com, Apr 27, 2010

@ Jonathan - Sorry making all +900 icons in another size in not going to happen. On top 64x64 are really big icons! :-)

@ Max - Sorry, we only work in monochrome, white on background color so we cannot do any national flags. :-)

Hello guys.

Thank you for wonderful project! You are good!

I would like to help with icon and pages translation to Ukrainain language (I have experience with Wordpress plugins-themes translation).

Stas.

Comment by project member nico.mol...@gmail.com, Jul 1, 2010

Hello Statek

You are welcome, if you can help with the ukrainian language, you can.

We don't need icon translations but wiki pages like we did for german (http://code.google.com/p/google-maps-icons/wiki/Kartensymbole).

You may translate : - Icon categories (http://code.google.com/p/google-maps-icons/wiki/IconDescriptions) - About paragraph (http://code.google.com/p/google-maps-icons/) - Keywords (Map Markers, POI Icons, Placemarks, Free Icons, Map Pins, Points of Interest, Map Symbols)

That's all we translate, we are grateful for your help :)

Cheers -- Nico

Comment by statek, Jul 8, 2010

Ok, Nico.

Can you add me to translation team so I could create & edit Ukrainian pages?

HEY NICO. This is a great site! Thanks. I have already used your dump truck. Is there any way you can make a toxic waste site?

Comment by dejan.pa...@gmail.com, Oct 25, 2010

Hello. We are using the icons in our project.

What do we specify in contribution? That is, what do we say?

Comment by project member nico.mol...@gmail.com, Nov 26, 2010

@Dejan : it's late but you can credit the project this way :
