UserGuide Wiki page commented on by douglas.haines   -   The Email Uploader will not upload Draft items that have not been sent. These messages will get an error 'Missing "Date:" header'. I tried moving the messages to Outlook Express and back with no luck. I tried saving the messages as .msg files and copying them back into the Drafts folder in the user mailbox, but this did not work. The only way I could get Drafts to upload was to send the message and copy the email from Sent Items back to Drafts. Once the email had the date info, it uploaded fine. Something Google needs to look at.

issue 81 (Trying to transfer e-mail from Entourage into Gmail via mbox...) commented on by r...@activityuk.com   -   It seems that if you convert the .mbox file to separate .eml files, then back to mbox again Google Email Uploader recognises them fine. The way I did this was to - :: Import the mbox file into Thunderbird using ImportExportTools (import into a new folder) :: Export the folder to .eml files (using the ImportExportTools) for Windows Mail (again as a new folder on the Desktop, or somewhere else) :: Import the folder with all the .eml files back into Thunderbird (again, using ImportExportTools, and again to a new folder - this makes it easier to identify what you need to import in Email Uploader) :: Load up Google Email Uploader, and your emails should now show up... Hope this helps.

FAQ Wiki page commented on by davea0511   -   FYI to those who keep getting the error: "Your account is not allowed to upload email. You must login to Gmail for your domain before you can use this feature. Also, your domain administrator may need to enable email migration for your domain." ... You cannot use this tool if you're just using gMail by itself. It's only for Google Apps users, in which case your email is attached to a domain either YOU own (thus the verbiage: "for your domain") or of which you are a member. You can use Google Apps Standard if for personal use, which is free, but doesn't contain the collaboration tools and other features of Google Apps Premium. Google Apps Premium costs $50/yr for businesses, but free for schools. Note that creating a Google Apps account takes a little bit of know-how so find someone who knows about setting up domains etc to help you if you're clueless. When you use this tool, after you've created your Google Apps account, be sure and type into the application the email address attached to your domain which you specified when you created the Google Apps account (not your gmail email address). Alternatively if you don't want Google Apps you can use the "import mail and contents" feature of your existing gmail accounts, however this will not pull mail from your desktop email programs. This should work however if you have an IMAP account, pulling the data from your IMAP server.

Again note that Google Apps is $50/user/year for businesses, free for schools.

issue 40 (Gmail displays sender/receiver name wrong when missing SMTP ...) commented on by dwill705   -   This issue needs fixing immediately Google! I think a lot of people who wish to ditch Outlook and no longer have an Exchange server would very much like to import their mail into the web based google mail without having to experience the 'unknown sender' syndrome. Outlook manages to recover the names of the senders without the requirement of an Exchange server so why can't Google mail? Better still, allow web- based Google mail to accept and unpack a .pst file upload directly without the need for Outlook at all!

UserGuide Wiki page commented on by alexanderperls   -   I went through hell and back getting my mail from Mail.app onto Gmail. I did it finally. I had to convert to Thunderbird format from mail.app, using a program called EMAILCHEMY. Then I found that the "google email uploader" didn't work for the mail imported to thunderbird. Here again Emailchemy saved me -- it's got a working email uploader to google. Here is the workaround to get your email uploaded to a non-paid gmail account, also -- first, set up a paid GOOGLE APPS account, and upload your mail there. Then download it back to your computer using GMAIL BACKUP. Then restore it back to your free gmail account using the RESTORE functionality of GMAIL BACKUP.

issue 35 ('Error 2' during first execution) commented on by ash...@spiread.com   -   I did all of this! I found the email uploader in the programs started it and when it was loading the email, the program stops or won't respond. Is this a Vista problem? Now what do I do?

UserGuide Wiki page commented on by blaine.dev   -   This uploader is useless for people who use Tbird Profiles. My Profiles work great in Thunderbird, and have for many years now. The Uploader interface shows 0 messages. Thinking that the documentation and FAQs had some correspondence to reality, I looked for a Customize button, and the "Select mail customization screen", and even for additional programs under the Start menu. Nothing. Since the Back button is disabled all I can do is try the useless file navigator that the "Add a Thunderbird mailbox" link brings up. That simply navigates the file system, giving you no clue as to which file type it needs. Contrary to the docs, it wants files not a directory, yet it finds 0 messages in all of my mailboxes. Maybe the uploader works fine for Outlook, as it's apparent the developers don't know anything about cross-platform development, but this tool is useless for Thunderbird. Thunderbird users should just follow Google's Thunderbird setup instructions to set up the new account, then simply copy and paste messages from old account to new account. This gives much more control and is much more untuitive (click & dragging what you want) than anything this tool has ever aspired to.

issue 13 (Lots of errors attributable to no "Date:" line? [Thunderbird...) commented on by martijndijksterhuis   -   As this bug has been open for over a year and I needed a solution now I have written my own basic Thunderbird E-mail uploader in PHP. It has succesfully uploaded all our company e-mail accounts to Google Mail for Apps. http://code.google.com/p/googlemailappuploader/

issue 15 (Error when signing in "Forbidden: You are not authorized to ...) commented on by Mark.J.Worley   -   I get exactly this issue, with no options to enable email uploading in the Google Apps standard edition... I'm currently piloting this with my home accounts, with a view to upgrading to Premier for work, but I won't do that if I can't do a simple migration. I note nothing has happened on this front since 2008, so I wonder if this is being supported?

issue 13 (Lots of errors attributable to no "Date:" line? [Thunderbird...) commented on by martijndijksterhuis   -   This is still a problem. I am trying to import a number of Thunderbird MBOX directories. Failure rate is about 50% (all of them complaining about a wrongly formatted date, the emails do have date fields) which is of course unacceptable.
