google-ajax-apis - issue #637

Please add Twitter Bootstrap under Google CDN

Posted on Aug 26, 2012 by Quick Hippo

Recently Twitter Bootstrap gained position #1 in popular watched repositories on Github [1]. Even more than jQuery.

Isn't yet the time to add Google CDN support for it?

Consider this practical scenario:

Most of developers load jQuery or other libraries from Google's CDN because it's more likely the user has already visited another website that loads libraries from Google's CDN thus it is already cached in the browser.

There's one or two sites hosting Twitter Bootstrap on their CDN but developers haven't adopted these options as a "good practice", so every time a user visits for the first time a website using Twitter Bootstrap, it has to be downloaded each time.

So, I second the motion.

Regards.

Use http://www.bootstrapcdn.com/

not many people are using http://www.bootstrapcdn.com/, if it will be hosted on google there are more chances that more people will use cdn and therefore it will be more chances that when visiting your page bootstrap files will be cached

I just tried http://www.bootstrapcdn.com/... and reverted back to serving BS from my own server. It's too slow to be useable. Of course it can prevent from downloading the CSS if many other sites are using it, but first time download is really slower than serving from my own site or... downloading jQuery form Google CDN.

I must agree that Google's CDN is really fast.. and a bit more known and used.

Posted on Mar 18, 2013 by Massive Elephant

Wow! cdnjs.com is impressive!!! That's what I expected from Google CDN, in support of open source. Even kind of surprising that github.com or sf.net don't already do that. I wouldn't mind if Google said they would CDN anything but it had to be on Google Code.

I hate to add more noise to this bug, but I'm afraid I'm just going to have to get this comment out in the hope that more won't follow.

When people star this issue, they are subscribed to the updates. When you add a comment saying 'Hey google plz add, +1 +1, k thnx bye!!" all 204 people who have starred this issue receive a mail. This is happening a lot.

Every week, people are getting more unnecessary messages because they are subscribed to this issue, and the only thing this does is cause people to UNSTAR the issue because they don't want the spam. So by adding extra, '+1'-style comments here, you may be actually damaging the chance of this being fixed by causing people to unstar.

If you're interested in getting this fixed. Just star the issue. If you have something useful to add to the discussion then by all means do comment, but if you just want to show your support then star, don't comment with a 'me too' - we have plenty of those already.

There's a few choices for CDN's and in terms of Bootstrap the first choice is http://www.bootstrapcdn.com/ They do a lot of stuff specific to Bootstrap (Font Awesome, Boot Swatch) that Google isn't setup to do right now.

The larger issue is that Google either needs to open up their CDN so library providers can self-publish and keep their version and combinations of JS & CSS up to date. Things change so fast that the Google CDN will never be up to date if it's some one's "20% job" to maintain the CDN.

Or they should just stand-up and say there are other, dedicated CDNs, out there you should use for a given library and then concentrate on their own Google libraries.

Posted on Sep 11, 2013 by Swift Bear

I am using http://cdnjs.com as an alternative. They have a huge collection of libraries, including bootstrap, and is upto date.

You don't want to use the built-in bootstrap. It will make your site look just like every other site that's using it. If you still want a CDN, just use http://www.bootstrapcdn.com/.

I'm tired of getting "me too" emails (along with 320 other people). I am removing myself from this, as I no longer care.

The key words "MUST", "MUST NOT", "REQUIRED", "SHALL", "SHALL NOT", "SHOULD", "SHOULD NOT", "RECOMMENDED", "MAY", and "OPTIONAL" in this document are to be interpreted as described in RFC 2119.

  1. DO NOT Comment unless you have something useful to say. kellystu...@gmail.com is right, too many "me too" comments. Remember everyone (313 people) who has starred this gets a notification.

  2. kellystu...@gmail.com, most sites SHOULD have a custom css stylesheet anyway, to make their site look different. We are also aware of bootstrapcdn.com. We are all probably using it already. We simply want it added to Google's CDN. I would also like to say that cdnjs is another option. It is supposedly faster than Google's CDN.

  3. If anyone else does a "me too" message, I WILL personally get your email and write a bot to spam it.

  4. Sorry to add to your inbox people. I WON'T do it again if I can help it.

http://www.bootstrapcdn.com really isn't very reliable. This isn't just another "me too" comment. Their CDN simply isn't as good as Google. If your site is built on Bootstrap, and the CDN is down or running slowly, your site simply breaks or takes forever to finish loading.

What's the purpose of a CDN if it isn't reliable? What "MUST" we do to get bootstrap or FontAwesome onto Google's CDN? ("MUST" being used in accordance with RFC 2119)

I don't presume to know the best interest in this for Google as a business, but I'll add my two cents. The current cdns that are available for bootstrap are utter garbage, and terribly slow and unreliable. Google would certainly remedy this, so to the powers that be, make a call.

+1 - I'd prefer to link to Google's CDN for both jQuery and Bootstrap
