How to Install Global Menu to your GNOME Desktop

Global Menu works out of box.

  1. Install a pre-built binary package
  2. Add Global Menu Panel Applet (or an equivalent name in you language) to the top panel
  3. Right click on applet and choose Enable Global Menu (or an equivalent name in your language)

That's all. It's just that easy!

It's not clear above, but on Ubuntu the package name is gnome2-globalmenu.

Comment by aantny, Jan 13, 2009

The repository seems to be outdated. (It has 0.6 packages.) Can anyone comment on this?

Here's a link to a .deb for Ubuntu Intrepid! I converted it from the Fedora package and it seems to work just fine!

That's great for my i386 laptop, but what do I do with my AMD64 computer?

I've tried building the source, and it works without a hitch, but doesn't seem to show up in the "Add to Panel" tool.

When is the PPA going to be updated¿?

Comment by seanbarman, Jan 24, 2009

There doe's not seem to be an option to change font

I cannot get this to work. I have the applet but when I right click on the appelet (which is invisible) I go to preferences which brings up a blank window. I'm running Intrepid Ibex. Any help?

Comment by leif.walsh, Jan 26, 2009

Could someone change the deb Cassidy posted above to have the package name gnome2-globalmenu, so that apt realizes it's a new version of the old package (so named in ubuntu)?

Comment by suvendu.giri, Jan 27, 2009

i installed the deb package but there is no Global menu applet in the list of applets!! m i missing something?

Comment by suvendu.giri, Jan 27, 2009

@PErickson87 I did the same and could not the think into 'Add to Panel' even after 'n' number of logout-logins. Then I did something which got the thing wrking!! http://code.google.com/p/gnome2-globalmenu/wiki/InstallingonUbuntu

@lostcorrectly same with me. the panel is invisible. Right clicking on it to go to Preferences pops a widget which says "Not yet available". I have been needing this one desperately... somebody help!!

Even after following the instructions the blog linked to by suvendu.giri (ppa install of vala, ppa install of global menu), I get the same invisible menu, blank preferences dialog.

Comment by todd.cha...@gmail.com, Jan 30, 2009

At some point yesterday I noticed that Pidgin did not have a menubar, I right-clicked around the panel to find the global-menu, removed it and re-added it. Seems to be working now!(??!?)

Comment by qwertynerd, Feb 07, 2009

I am at the same point. Couldn't get the instructions here to work so I tried Cassidy's/suvendu's solution.Invisible menu. Help!

I'm successfully installed gnome-macmenu from this project on Ubuntu 9.04 alpha. After install i got same problem. I fix it by this way: 1)Add applet to the top panel; 2)Open terminal and type: sudo cp /usr/etc/gconf/schemas/gnome-globalmenu.schemas /etc/gconf/schemas/ sudo cp /usr/etc/gconf/schemas/gnome-globalmenu.schemas /usr/share/gconf/schemas/ sudo gconf-schemas --register /usr/share/gconf/schemas/gnome-globalmenu.schemas 3)after that, we're ready to enable macmenu. Press Alt+F2 and type gconf-editor,press OK. 4)In the left panel, choose /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/gtk_modules 5)In the right panel, right click on the empty space and click "new key" 6)Name="globalmenu-gnome",type="boolean", value="true", then press OK and on the top panel MacMenu? appears. Now u can enter preferences dialog.

For OpenSuse? 11.2 x86-64 users, i installed the globalmenu for the opensuse 11.1 and it is working like a charm. The panel crashed when i first installed it using one click but a restart fixed it.
