Having transparency would make it much easier to blend into the many
gnome-themes there are.

Sure. This is almost a applet level thing. (also related to libgnomenu).

There's a transparency problem with the arrow in case of overflow. I'm using Intrepid
with rev 2333, and the normal theme.

Another transparency issue is hitting me when using Mac4lin Beta theme, but only with
an unsupported app such as Firefox

The Mac4Lin issue is not specific to our applet. Because I noticed the tray area also
doesn't work well with the transparent background with Mac4Lin enabled.

I am closing this issue as Fixed for now.
