issue 127 (Black menus with Skype) commented on by german.layer8   -   You're probably running skype under 64bits. The same happen to me. In fact, newer QT libraries can use the GTK theme, but skype keep being a 32bits application. So, it detects the gtk config and colors but fails to load murrine (since it needs 32 bits murrine and the one installed is for 64bits).

issue 128 (Recognizable icon for Empathy) commented on by perfectska04   -   The purpose of using a generic icon is not to undermine the Telepathy framework, or what it stands for. I understand where you're coming from. However, a generic icon is used because this is an icon set, and there are other considerations involved. Most of the icons included do not refer to a single application, they are generic and this allows for future or current reusage with other applications similar in concept. That said, the generic Empathy icons are *only* included because Empathy does not currently have icons designed at all relevant sizes, with Tango/GNOME specifications. This makes their icon hard to recognize at smaller sizes, so an alternate icon was added here so that the application would be a little easier to recognize when using this particular icon set. Once upstream has had the chance to rebuild their icons properly, there will be no need to include Empathy icons with this icon set. I'm sorry if the decision makes you uncomfortable, but for icon sets - generic icons are usually the best way to go, even if sometimes branding is replaced. Empathy is not the only case, *many* applications are themed by gnome-colors with a simpler, more generic icon.

issue 128 (Recognizable icon for Empathy) commented on by jayr...@graffiti.net   -   I see you have your own concept of usability, but can you draw the Empathy icon so it scales well? Can you draw? Why an application that has its own branding (a good branding) and a whole framework behind be wrongfully identified as Kopete 4 or iChat? The connection you've explained is pretty poor and is unobvious, there is no usability in spite of the effort.

issue 128 (Recognizable icon for Empathy) changed by perfectska04   -   Empathy is a chat application, and the icon being used is merely a chat bubble with an exclamation. It is a generic metaphor that is easier to associate with a chat application than the original (a poorly scaled down representation of two faces?). The icon does not have its original logo, because a generic icon is easier to create and can also be reused with other similar applications in the future. In this case, the metaphor is clear, easy to recognize, and assuming there are no working linux ports of iChat - I doubt anyone could mix them up :).

issue 125 ([Enhancement] New boot/login screen) commented on by perfectska04   -   As for xsplash, there is a new update that only uses one background file in backports repository. You can make said file a syslink to your current wallpaper and you'll always get your GDM/splash/Desktop in sync. Alternatively, you can make this file a completely black background and xsplash will appear as an extension to usplash until your desktop appears. However, your GDM will also have a static black background.

issue 125 ([Enhancement] New boot/login screen) commented on by perfectska04   -   @mrbzzt If there's a particular matching I can add, it'd be easy to do so. However, I'm not sure where the bottom panel gets it's colors exactly... If it just uses the general window background color, there would be no way to incorporate it (other than just making a Shiki variant all dark, and solely for GDM). If anyone knows of a matching that can allow me to specify the text and background colors for the bottom GDM panel, I can add it to Shiki.

issue 125 ([Enhancement] New boot/login screen) commented on by mrbzzt   -   I just replaced the xsplash background images and made the logo files fully transparent. I hope that they somehow make it possible to create themes and switch these in the future. I've also been experimenting with the new login screen. It seems to be using normal GNOME themes and icon sets. The GNOME-Colors icons look quite good on it, but the Shiki-Colors theme does not like the panel-like bar at the bottom. Only the shutdown menu button in the bottom right corner gets themed as a panel. I wonder if it would be possible to alter the theme to treat the whole bar as a panel. You can try it yourself by entering these commands in in a terminal (And then logging out): sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 -t string -s /apps/metacity/general/theme Shiki-Colors-Metacity sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 -t string -s /desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme Shiki-Brave sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 -t string -s /desktop/gnome/interface/icon_theme GNOME-Brave To reset to Ubuntu default: sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 -t string -s /apps/metacity/general/theme HumanLogin sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 -t string -s /desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme HumanLogin sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 -t string -s /desktop/gnome/interface/icon_theme HumanLoginIcons

issue 127 (Black menus with Skype) reported by pieskino   -   What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Load Skype; 2. Right click on its application bar icon, or just the options menu on its window; 3. Look at black background of the options list. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Black menu, expected white or almost more visible one. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? 2.1.0.47, from medibuntu repository.

issue 125 ([Enhancement] New boot/login screen) commented on by perfectska04   -   xplash currently only uses images found in /usr/share/images/xsplash You could change the background and animations as you wish, but this would not be reversible - unless you backed up the original backgrounds. I imagine you can also modify the animations, as they are images as well. This, however would be more tricky and require more knowledge and some means of creating the new animations with GIMP or Inkscape. For now, Karmic users are stuck with the stock xplash and they cannot modify it without replacing this images. Perhaps in the next release more configuration will be available?

issue 125 ([Enhancement] New boot/login screen) changed by perfectska04   -   There is currently no graphical way to configure xsplash. In fact, the only way to make changes to it is to physically alter it's image files found in /usr/share/images/xsplash. Due to this, there's no way for me to create a theme for xsplash - as it would be destructive. If you want to personally modify it, you can go to that folder as administrator and replace the provided backgrounds with your own, effectively changing the xsplash appearance.

issue 84 (STICKY: Missing icons and feature requests) commented on by perfectska04   -   Oh, as a workaround. If you REALLY want monochrome icons on gnome-colors, all you have to do is: 1. Make a copy of the Humanity-Dark folder in /usr/share/icons and rename it to something like "gnome-brave-dark" (or desired color) 2. Open the folder's index.theme file in a text editor, and replace "Inherits=Humanity" to "Inherits=gnome-brave". 3. Replace the "Name=Humanity-Dark" to "Name=Gnome-Brave-Dark". 4. Update icon cache: sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -qf /usr/share/icons/gnome-brave-dark 5. Select the new icon set in Appearance Preferences. This will give you monochrome tray icons without breaking anything. However, you will only be able to do this for the light monochrome icons, so they will only be visible on dark themes such as Shiki-Colors or Dust.

issue 84 (STICKY: Missing icons and feature requests) commented on by perfectska04   -   @nate8nate8 The connecting animation would take a great deal of space and icons, even though it'd be just seen once. I doubt it'll get replaced, might be a better idea to create nicer tango-based icons and submit upstream to the network-manager application. @andrey@sitnik.ru The problem is that monochrome icons can't be visible with all themes. You can have light icons that will only be visible on dark themes, or dark icons that will only be visible with light themes. There'd have to be two variations of each theme (considering gnome-colors ships 7 icon sets, we'd have 14 just to add a few tray icons), and even then - it'd be rather inconvenient to have to switch between icon sets just because you're trying out a different GTK theme. Ubuntu's icons can get away with it, because they only have one icon set. You can select either a dark or a light version for that one icon set. GNOME-Colors has 7, making two variations of every single one would be impractical.

issue 122 (gnome 2.28 and system tray) commented on by perfectska04   -   If New Wave shows the same, then there are two possible reasons: 1. It's a gnome-panel/GTK 2.18 issue. 2. A new type of matching has been implemented, and those specific applications use it. If this is the case, it can probably be fixed - but there's no way for me to know which matching rule is being used. Am I correct in guessing that the applications suffering from this the most are sonata and gajim? If so, I'll install them and try various wildcard panel matchings and see if one works.

issue 122 (gnome 2.28 and system tray) commented on by perfectska04   -   If the issue is also available in Dust, then it might be application related or due to changes in gnome-panel. To confirm this, can you try testing with the "New Wave" theme? It generally has looser panel matching options, so if it also fails at drawing the correct background - the issue might be elsewhere. If the background does appear with "New Wave", then Shiki can be made to use looser matching types in order to fix the issue.
