The right stuff, but it's being bypassed by my browsers I guess. Meaning the browser is ignoring the Hosts file.

Same issue here. If I do a DNS lookup (even after flushing) on the command line, the change isn't taken into consideration. If I open the file with a file editor (ex : macvim) and save it without doing any modification, it work.

Hey folks! I don't know were i read it but i can remember that Gas Mask CAN NOT work under OSX Lion (10.7.x) due to new Sandbox restrictions in the OS. And yes- also issues under LION. This is what's happening: I can start gas mask without problems. I can edit the hosts file and save it. When i open the hosts file manually (/etc/hosts) the entries made with gas mask are there! BUT the entries made with gas mask show no effect whatsoever... My question now: Will there be a Lion Update available sooner or later?

Addendum: Here is the article about the issue regarding editing the hosts file and the new Sandboxing restrictions. Unfortunately the article is in german: http://www.macnow.cc/hosts-datei-bearbeiten-mac-os-10-7-lion-2134/

Make sure you have a new line after your new hosts entry. It works for me in Lion.

The problem for me was actually the encoding of the host files that Gas Mask was saving. I was having the issue where no matter what I put in the file via the Gas Mask editor, nothing changed. It turned out that the hosts file that was being saved was Unicode (UTF 8). When I re-encoded in TextWrangler to Western (Mac OS Roman), it worked just fine. Perhaps Gas Mask could be changed to write files in Western instead of Unicode.
