Pamela,
when can we expect street names and detailed maps of Israel available via API?
The issue kinda slows down a lot of developers.

Currently my workaround is, when I want to add markers to my Israel map, to open the
map at the same coordinates in Bing so I get some details, then correlate that with
the Satellite view, then go back to Google Map. I don't think this is a very
desireable thing for Google - I mean encouraging people to go to their competitors.

And if not, is there any other service for Israel that can help me to accomplish

Regarding kangarim, i guess they are calling the regular maps site with a formatted
URL, and displaying the result somehow in an iframe overlaying it smartly with the
other stuff. Notice the >> button in the upper middle of the page, that will expand
the map to the right, just as the maps site does.
I agree completely that Google is pushing us all to explore hacks around the amazing
fact that all Israel's neighbors are supported in the API and Israel is not. I could

I did some research this week and found that all the mapping information available in
Israel comes from Mapa - GISrael. Everyone from Google, through AtlasCT ,
Systematics (eMap), and Telmap, who all offer some sort of API support, are using
Mapa data.
This is likely the reason that they can dictate to Google not using their data in the
API, and why the companies who offer API support for mapping info in Israel charge
more then 1,000 NIS monthly to start using their APIs.
This situation poses a huge barrier to innovation and is stifling development of
location (LBS) and mapping in Israel. As I said above, I can build neat stuff for
Cairo and Aman, but not for Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
I wish Google could use their clout to change this.
Here's for hope...

The logo simply indicates the fact the site is using the Google maps API.
Using the API is perfectly OK, and so is using the aerial imagery.
The problem is with the mapping data - it's the street map that you can't get from
Google.

pala.junk in my opinion google is to blame, dont kid yourself. its not like they dont
have maps of israel. its only a matter of alowing developers to use them or not from
the api.
The most stright forward example for this ismaps.google.com
its abit hard for me to belive the google pays someone else for israel maps, actualy
even the thought of it makes me laugh.
so it is googles fault.
but what pisses me off the most is that google founders are in fact from israel.
is it so difficult for them to invest in their country abit, insted of harvesting
developers for their multi billion dollar labor camp.
if you think that google cant do somthing about this, well you need to think about it
from a diffrent prespective.
google has the funds to do ANYTHING THEY WANT, which means that they can but wont.

That's rather funny..
Anyway, the Israeli Road maps belong to GISrael, and not Google, so I am sure it's a
licensing issue. Google got the license to use the data, just not spread it in the API.
And another thing - Larry Page and Sergey Brin are not from Israel, and have no special
relationship with Israel.

well I really don't think that them having some special feeling or non at all toward
Israel is relevant.
the fact is Israel is the only country (that I saw) that have this issue and from the
little search I've made its been there from the first Google maps API
you'd think that by now (how many years does Google maps API exists?) Google would of
worked something out...
the only conclusion is Israel just don't make enough money to care about ...
and that's sad and offensive
oh and don't even get me started about the fact that the Golan heights is separated
Israel is relevant.

Waze only contains roads through which Waze contributers have traveled.
From my experience, more than a few roads are missing.
Google maps is superior in geocoding, directions, graphics, speed... It's hard think of
a worthy replacement. Waze is the poor man's solution.

Google is going to miss the boat quite soon: Nokia subsidiary Navteq is going to
make available full maps by the end of the year, Waze is quite viable right now -
they have added GeoCoding to the API, and even OpenStreetMaps have ISraeli cover,
though the quality is not all that hot.
I'm hoping the Navteq entry will push Google and its supplier - Mapa - to opening up
the API.

This is crazy! The bug was about Google Maps API not being available for Israel. Unless I'm wrong, this has not yet been changed!
I have been commenting on this issue since June 28 (http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/detail?id=664#c10 ) under a different email. The lack of coverage for Israel was a major factor in my decision to ditch the project I was working on. As I said before, the lack of coverage is hurting innovation coming out of Israel.
