What is GMailPush?

GMailPush is an application that checks your GMail account for new mail and sends an SMS to your AT&T phone number. This was designed to emulate push notifications for GMail on the iPhone. However, in reality, it's simply a fetch application that sends SMS notifcations to your phone.

The thought process was that since I'm being charged an insane amount of money for unlimited text messages, I might as well take advantage of it. That being said, SMS messages are push notifications if used correctly.

How does GMailPush work?

The application sends an email to your phone using AT&T's free phone number email (10-digit-phone-number@txt.att.net). It will only send an sms when new mail is found, and it will only send one notification for new mail (no matter how many emails you received during the specified period). The period at which it checks your email is configurable, but is set at 15 minutes by default.

GMailPush is designed to work for GMail, and uses SSL as well as a google-supported prefix on your username ("recent:"). If you want this to work with other pop3 accounts, download the source and remove SSL (if not needed) and the prefix from the username.

NOTE: The application runs in the System Tray. In order to start checking for email:

  1. Start the application (GMailPush.exe)
  2. Right-click on the icon in the systray, and select Settings...
  3. Save your settings
  4. Right-click on the icon in the systray, and select Start
