excuse my noobish question, but if i follow these instructions when 3D becomes available will it automatically update, and does the netbook user interface(desktop) work or would I have to use the regular desktop?

Comment by project member luca.for...@gmail.com, May 18, 2010

yes updates will be available through this repository. UNR should work (not tested personally) because composite is now working

Comment by rios...@gmail.com, May 18, 2010

thanks, if it works out i can finally upgrade to Lucid...I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow after I'm done :D

Comment by tjsampso...@gmail.com, May 18, 2010

hey i tried the fix and now suspend doesnt work

Comment by project member jose.ban...@gmail.com, May 18, 2010

On a Asus EeePC 1101HA (probably also in all others that are supported by the eeepc-laptop kernel module) you don't need 'acpi_backlight=vendor', in fact it will probably break your brightness keys.

Comment by pbm...@gmail.com, May 19, 2010

great works on my acer a751h many thanks to you !!!!

Comment by manul...@gmail.com, May 20, 2010

great works on my acer a751h, youtube videos and sound card all correctly funtion.

Comment by rios...@gmail.com, May 20, 2010

ok, followed the instructions and now I get a different warning on startup. Is this because I did something wrong or because 3d still isn't working. If I did something wrong do I just follow the steps again or something else? again, sorry I'm such a noob at this....at should have researched more when I bought this...I would've avoided the GMA 500 completely. Thx

Comment by sate...@gmail.com, May 20, 2010

Thanks for all your work on this, luca!

Comment by thefredd...@gmail.com, May 21, 2010

Ditto -- I just installed this on my Mini 10, and have full resolution. Thank you!!!

Comment by rios...@gmail.com, May 23, 2010

ok, did an update and now the driver works and i have full res. i guess i should just stick to the netbook 2d? whenever i try 3d i just get a white screen, but i'm assuming that is because the 3d doesn't work yet. any input is appreciated and thank you luca, and anyone else who can help :D

Comment by jackthep...@gmail.com, May 24, 2010

I installed this on an acer 751h, and now I have no window borders, any ideas?

Comment by slonua, May 25, 2010

@luca i think we need port package psb-meta to be real meta, aka the point of install:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gma500/ppa && sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install psb-meta

OR meta package can be another, new one or xserver-xorg-video-psb

any ideas ?

btw: pals, feel free to post bugs and any ideas here or on https://launchpad.net/gma500

Comment by slonua, May 25, 2010

@jackthepumpkinking17 i think u have issue with metacity. in fact u have removed compiz .. u must replace it with

$ metacity --replace &

Hello. Work fine on my dell mini 12. However, I tried to get video acceleration but my attempt failed. I installed va-aapi.deb + va-api mplayer. I'd advise NOT doing this with an Acer Aspire One ZA3 or you will have a completely unusable system. Carried out above instructions on fresh install of Xubuntu 10.04. Screen flickers a few times on reboot and then completely blank. Not even sure how to recover from this!

Comment by project member luca.for...@gmail.com, May 29, 2010

@pauldaskin: I have Acer Aspire One 751H ZA3 and the PPA is completely usable here..so your advise is not useful.. give us some more info and we'll try to help you.

Comment by pauldas...@gmail.com, May 29, 2010

Thats very re-assuring as I'd love it to work! Re-installing and trying again to show exact steps. Will post video on Y/T shortly.

Comment by pauldas...@gmail.com, May 29, 2010

Just re-installed and this time it worked great. Thanks! But I have a video of the flashing screens and unusable Ubuntu 10.04 I got originally. Trying to retrace how I got it wrong on previous three installs.

Comment by RKNSKNRo...@gmail.com, May 30, 2010

@pauldaskin Getting the flickering screen and lockups on my Nokia Booklet 3G. It constantly does this: boots up to correct resolution (no desktop yet, only top bar), then flicker, wallpaper shows up for half a second then disappears, locks up (mouse is able to move but dialog boxes are in the background and un-clickable), just loops these steps over and over.

Comment by Propr...@gmail.com, Jun 2, 2010

RE: The flickering between wallpaper/whiteness. I don't have a solution to the problem, but if you can get to a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T works on mine) you can run programs as normal. I'm typing this post by doing this.

Comment by fedeavi...@gmail.com, Jun 6, 2010

Ha funcionado para mi Asus Eee PC 1201HA pero como dijo "jose.bandos" mis teclas de aumentar/disminuir el brillo de la pantalla ya no funcionan.. Existe alguna forma de solucionar esto? Gracias

Comment by picasasu...@gmail.com, Jun 8, 2010

Hello,

So, I have a Dell mini 10 with the nice high-resolution graphics. After tweaking it used to work fine until I upgraded to 10.04. But I feel I am close:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gma500/fix
apt-get install poulsbo1-libdrm poulsbo-driver-2d poulsbo-driver-3d poulsbo-config

Then, soup up /etc/X11/xorg.conf, adding this line to the "Device" section:

Option "IgnoreACPI" "yes"

I also have these lines in my Device section I cribbed from earlier. None of the Options seem to have no impact on stability one way or the other:

Identifier "GMA500"
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Option "DRI" "on"
Option "MigrationHeuristic" "Greedy"
Driver "psb"

Notes: there was an error message saying I needed to enable DRM, hence the libdrm line. And without the IgnoreACPI X dies at launch and the system is unusable.

NOW I have hi-res graphics but . . . I am . . . no Gnome icons. Nothing on the desktop, nothing in the menus, none of the widgets . . . if I try to change the Appearance and select a theme X crashes and I come back to the login screen.

But, for example, Google Chrome runs fine. (Just no icons.) The icons work (yay tooltips) they just don't render . . .

. . . idears?

Comment by picasasu...@gmail.com, Jun 8, 2010

(NOTE: poulsbo1-libdrm should read libdrm-poulsbo1 but it is included as a dependency anyway.)

Comment by andre.ma...@gmail.com, Jun 10, 2010

Hi all. This script works perfectly.

But now, the only screen resolution in my Acer AO751h is 1366*768. So, the most part of games (even if is only 2d) don't work. I think this is because te most of them run in 640*480 or 800*600.

There is any way to get these screen resolutions working? Maybe setting it up in xorg.conf?

Thanks!!

Re.: Comment by pauldaskin, May 29, 2010 I have a Aspire 750h, SSD and Mint 9. I've had the same experience ass paulaskin even after 3 installs. At the moment I'm scared to try anything as it's an office netbook. Any really safe ideas? Many thanks! marco

Comment by alan.woo...@gmail.com, Jun 13, 2010

For anyone with suspend problems uninstalling vbetool seemed to fix things on my 751h. Might be worth adding it to the conflicts for one of the meta packages?

Comment by andresgattinoni, Jun 18, 2010

I followed the instructions on my Asus EEE PC 1101HA with a fresh install of Lucid Lynx. I get a white desktop (not a nice white wallpaper, but a something-here-isn't-working white desktop). I can open programs (in fact I'm sending this from my Firefox on the EEE PC), but when I minimize them I see the white screen and it freezes for a while. Any ideas?

Comment by andresgattinoni, Jun 18, 2010

I forgot to mention that I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition Lucid Lynx. I have just logged out and logged back in using a "gnome" session and it works fine. However I'm having problems to log out (I actually had to manually turn off and on the eee pc to log back in).

Comment by gi4nnico...@gmail.com, Jun 29, 2010

I have the same problem of andres (asus 1201ha). this code seems does not work within a netbook edition session.. any ideas?

Comment by giovanni...@gmail.com, Jul 4, 2010

I tryed to follow the instructions on Ubuntu 10.04 32bit on my fit-PC2, but after the reboot I have a blank (black) screen. Entering ubuntu recovery mode and requesting the X failsafe configuration does not work. Please help.

Comment by konradka...@gmail.com, Jul 5, 2010

Hey all, great someone is doing something for GMA500. Just to chip in, I've tried to install this on a Benq Joybook Lite u121 Eco (what a mouthful!) after doing a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04(after the updates naturally). When I restart after the installation of the poulsbo drivers it freezes about where its supposed to initialize the graphics driver (I think...), even when booting into the recovery console. I've done this several times (wipe, reinstall, install poulsbo, reboot, freeze and repeat) so it might be something I'm doing wrong. Just a heads up to Benq Joybook users! If there is a way to help with this let me know, still a bit of a noob myself though. :)

Comment by alfeber...@gmail.com, Jul 7, 2010

I've installed Lucid on a Sony Vaio P11Z and ran updates. The full hardware resolution was supported at once but was extremely slow. Suspending the computer worked flawlessly.

Then I installed the packages from here. 2D acceleration seems to be working as things like moving windows now works smoothly.

My main issues are:

  • Suspend doesn't work; seems to work but on wakeup the screen stays dark. I also tried with all the hints given in the comments here. No success.
  • 3D support doesn't work (as stated, just informing you about my priorities).
  • Video (as in movie) support doesn't work; at least watching movies is not possible in larger than about 400x300 and there better doesn't happen anything fast, otherwise it is choppy as hell.
  • How can I deinstall the packages from here, just to have a working suspend again? Is a simple 'apt-get remove ...' sufficient? I'm reluctant to try this as it might break things and I could understand if this project does not support a simple deinstall.

I'd like to really thank all contributers to this project and hope you keep up the good work and finally manage to get all remaining issues fixed :-)

Btw, what URL should I keep an eye upon to not miss any breakthroughs? Currently I'm watching the subversion commits on this project but maybe there is something more official?

Cheers!

Alfe

Comment by alfeber...@gmail.com, Jul 7, 2010

One more thing: Ubuntu states here that there are two versions existing, a "stable" with non-working 3D support and a "beta" with working 3D-support. I tried both but didn't have any success in getting 3D working. And I didn't find any hints on this here. Can anyone tell me anything about this? --Alfe

using EXA instead of ShadowFB works a lot better for me. I am really happy with it.

I think the best way to uninstall the ppa:gma500 packages is via ppa-purge. It purges ppa packages and reverts to the official ones. You can install this package as always:

aptitude install ppa-purge

See its corresponding manpage to further instructions.

Asus T91MT suspend works after removing the package vbetool (1.1-2) as suggested in the comment by alan.woodland. I'm using the 'fixed' or experimental 3d enabled branch of the Poulsbo repository. The command 's2ram --force' works perfectly to suspend the computer, which is fully able to resume. I don't understand why it works, but for my case it does. I'm interested to understand why this is. So if someone has an inkling please post. thank you and thank you Alan.

On my Vaio X hibernation used to work when I used the older shell script. Now with this repository based solution it seems like hibernation doesn't restore the old state. At least my open firefox window never showed up again after hibernation. Also, hibernation doesn't end with a power down. Insted the computer immediately starts again showing the grub boot menu but never reaching power down.

Hi,

I am running linux mint 9 (based on ubuntu 10.04) on a ASUS 1201. Last night, I upgraded my Poulsbo driver and now I have NO video making the laptop unusable. The video hardware is OK as I can run from a USB drive and everything looks OK. How can I revert or re-install a video driver so that its usable? I dropped into single-user mode, went to /etc/X11 and renamed the xorg.conf file and copied the xorg.conf.failsafe into its place. Now, the boot gets as far as the 5 green dots and stops. Help! This is my wife's laptop! I don't want to completely start over with a clean install of everything!!

I have been using ubuntu and mint for several years on several PCs. This is the first "disastrous" upgrade that I have had.

THANKS! Ralph

It appears that my problem MAY be discussed at http://code.google.com/p/gma500/issues/detail?id=29

"This is a DKMS configuration error, it seems that on rebuild it doesn't create the appropriate links from the module source directory to /usr/src/psb-kernel-source.

The workaround for now is doing a purge of the package (sudo apt-get purge psb-kernel-source) and a reinstall."

This bug was fixed 38 hours ago.

Any ideas how I can recover enough to try this out? Currently, the boot gets as far as the 5 green dots and stops.

Comment by matsu...@gmail.com, Aug 11, 2010

Dear Rpeters52

I have the same problem too

the only thing that I can tell you to reach again your ubuntu home in primitive graphics is: - turn on your 1201ha - on grub prompt try the recovery mode (usually the 2nd choice) - after some matrix like text commands, there will be a Recovery Menu - I tried first dpkg, didn't fix the problem - Then tried failsafeX, that "fix" the problem to low-graphics mode

I also expect a solution of the bug/problem/whatever from the repository ppa:gma500/ppa They shouldn't have posted yesterday an upgrade without testing it

Comment by RPeter...@gmail.com, Aug 13, 2010

Hello,

Thanks for the info matsukas! I went into recovery mode, chose failsafeX and after a bit it hangs with a blinking line-cursor in the upper-left corner of the screen. Oh well, I guess I will reload....

In the future, I will wait a few days (weeks?) to update Poulsbo drivers...

Thanks again! Ralph

I've the same problem.

It's impossible to download this packages from the repository

Why ?

Comment by nia...@distance-earning.net, Sep 20, 2011

To the more recent users with problems, I think you might simply be running a more recent version of ubuntu than is available in the repository. If you're running 11.04 or even 10.10 I think you'll be out of luck unless you rebuild it yourself.
