GiveALink Firefox 3 extension

This Google Code project hosts the GiveALink Firefox extension for managing GiveALink bookmarks and searching all of the bookmarks in GiveALink. It is written for Firefox 3. The extension is currently in a pre-alpha stage. We would like for users to try out the extension and let us know of any bugs or problems found.

The extension has been tested on Firefox 3.0 up through Firefox 3.0.10 on Windows XP, Linux (RHEL 5), and Mac OSX. The extension failed to work properly on a couple OSX machines (10.4 and 10.5), but other similar machines have not had those problems. For complete functionality of the extension, you also need at least the Flash player 9 plug-in.

Installing the extension

The first step in installing the extension is to download the .xpi file.

Next, from the Firefox menu bar, select File > Open file... Find where you saved the .xpi file, and choose it as the file to open. There will be a popup asking you to confirm installation before the extension is installed.

After you install the extension, you will have to add any of the three buttons provided with the extension to the toolbar before you can use them. To do this, select View > Toolbars > Customize... from the Firefox menu.

This opens the toolbar button palette, which allows you to drag buttons to and from toolbars. Drag the GiveALink buttons to a toolbar to place them.

Using the extension

The extension includes three buttons -- one which opens GiveALink in the current browser tab, one which opens the sidebar for using most of the extension's functionality, and one for opening a popup for adding or editing the information for the current page in your bookmarks.

For more about using the extension, visit the GiveALink Firefox extension help page.
