FAQ

Every time I create a new release I get asked the same questions. Hopefully this will satisfy most people's questions.

clementine-player

I know about that. I started mine long before clementine and it is in c++ which I prefer not to touch. It is a duplication of efforts but I don't care in that respect. I am using this project as a learning tool and just sharing the results.

If this is a clone of Amarok isn't there licensing issues with Amarok being Gpl2 and Gereqi being Gpl3?

I've never seen a line of the Amarok code. Didn't see the point as Amarok is c++ and Gereqi is Python. I would estimate Gereqi is 99.9% my own and could explain a lot. The remainder is because I have used Quodlibet's gstreamer backend code as a guide to figure out how to use py-gstreamer (that project's documentation is appealingly sparse). I used pyinotify's very good examples in Gereqi as well.

How many Amarok 1.4 clones does the world need?

A long time ago I wanted a decent sized project to learn python. Coincidentally I got tired of people whinging about Amarok-2.0/2.1 and still not willing to do anything constructive. When I started I was the only one making a clone and it's not like I kept it quiet. I received some interest in cooperation and let those who contacted to do whatever took their fancy (UI improvements, lyrics backend). I'm not the type to chase people up and thus I received a couple patches in 10months instead. Despite the ease to get involved in the project Clementine and Pana gained critical mass, Gereqi didn't. I put it down to me not taking .deb/.rpm packaging seriously and being more interested in coding. So it goes.

What's with the ridiculous name?

Although Amarok is named after an album by Mike oldfield, Amarok is also a mythical wolf. I went with the mythical Wolf theme and came upon Geri and Freki. Gereqi is a tenuous portmanteau of those 2 names with the obligatory Qt "q" in there for good measure.

So, how do you pronounce that name?
