It works, somewhat. And it's already several decades beyond robogeo, for two simple reasons:
Price (Can't beat it) Lightroom Integration (great, isn't it, it's where we always wanted it).
I have however come across a minor snag.
When I launch it a second time (for the next batch of photos), it dumps lua errors. Restarting lightroom seems to be the solution. I'm running Vista/64 with plenty (4gb) of ram, so that's not the issue.
My GPX'es are exports from mapsource, and originates from a Foretrex 201.
Contactc me, if you need more details (that is possible via this system isn't it?)
//Svein (google that signature, and you'll likely find me, anyways.)
When I down load the plugin I get the following message from my virus checker (AVG):
URL: http://geotag-lightroom-plugin.googlecode.com/files/geotag.lrdevplugin.0.1.0.zip D:\Users\mclemens\Downloads\geotag.lrdevplugin.0.1.0.zip Potentially harmful program HideExec?.EV
Is this a problem with the download or my virus checker or is it a real virus?
Thanks
Install in "C:\Users\username\AppData?\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Modules", however I do not seem to have a "Modules" folder? Running Vista HP 32-bit and LR 1.3.1. Do i need to create the folder "modules"? Thanks!
Jeff,
All installs okay on 32bit Vista, but when I try and tag photos I get this error:
If I clear the error message and try again, I now get:
Just wondering - would you prefer people to open issue tickets rather than post here?
Using a MAC and not sure if I am missing something in the installation but I have followed the instructions through several times now reinstalling, but the menu items simply don't appear.
Jeff,
have you considered this geotagging scenario: when all photographs have IPTC country/city/state/location filled in or some of these fields. A request can be made to either a Yahoo or Google server to them retrive the GPS info.
For example this works with Yahoo: http://local.yahooapis.com/MapsService/V1/geocode?appid=YahooDemo&state=<state>&city=<city>
Google is a bit trickier because you have to embed the AJAX API's within a javascript and then reference the local page before the request is made. (I'm no Javscript guru). The google API appears to be more flexible and powerful though.
Anyway I'm sure this is all possible from Lua. Yahoo even have some Lua demo code. See: http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/rest/V1/geocode.html and the FAQ at: http://developer.yahoo.com/faq/
I have most of not all my photos with filled in IPTC location data but no GPS coords. Being able to attach even approximate coordinates would be nice so that I can generate map based galleries!
Something to thin about? I have started looking into it but am a bit pressed for time... Cheers, Simon.
Thank you, it is great idea to built-in geo-tagging directly in to Lightroom.
I tried your Lightroom Plug-in (Vista 64-bit Ultimate, 4GB RAM, Lightroom 1.3) unfortunately I was not successful. Installation is no problem; I am using RAW files (which should be normal in Lightroom).
It was easy to select files, browse for GPS file (from Gisteq - Phototrackr Lite), when I hit OK button it was necessary allow program to run (security warning by Lightroom), but geo-tagging was not successful.
After this experience, Lightroom start crashing, till I removed Geotag Lightroom Plug-in and repaired catalog.

By the way, if you are interested, I can help to put together User Guides.

Hi,
I tried this out in Mac OS 10.5.2, Lightroom 1.3.1, and a Garmin 60CSx, using GPX points imported using HoudahGPS (a gui wrapper for GPSBabel). The first error I had was this:
"GeotagMenuItem.lua"?:312: attempt to compare number with nil
I looked into the source and added a debug statement to GpxUtil?.lua to see what kind of data it was actually extracting from the GPX file, and sure enough, lots of missing time data. Then I looked at the GPS file, and found that all the tracks I had explicitly saved only had lat/lon and elevation, no time. I also found that one of my tracks was simply empty, and that the actual data from the track was in a separate track named "OriginalTrackName? #2". Weird. Most importantly, all the track data, including timestamps, were in a separate track called "ACTIVE LOG." Has anyone else dealt with similar GPS weirdness using GPSBabel and a Garmin GPS unit? I guess I can get around this by not saving tracks explicitly, or hand-editing my GPS files.
After all that, I manually edited my GPX to include only the "ACTIVE LOG" track. That imported nicely, and I confirmed that all the points had time info in the log file. I then hit "ok" from within the "Geotag Photos" dialog, and there were no errors, but my photos didn't get geotagged either. I checked the files in Preview, loaded metadata from file in Lightroom, but didn't see anything. It's possible I screwed up the Time Offset, so I will look into it more later, and maybe mess around with some more verbose logging.
I should note that GPSPhotoLinker worked like a charm on my GPS file with only the "ACTIVE LOG," so the data is all there and the timestamps seem to match.
Re: (kenichi.ueda) -- Garmin 60CSx tracklogs with no time.
Yes, on any Garmin unit, if you explicitly "save" your tracks, it strips the time limitation. It's not just you. They say it's a "feature".
You should upgrade your 60CSx's firmware (the latest versions have improved support for saving GPS tracks to the microSD card, and also support for OS-X). Then enable saving of tracks to the microSD card. Menu -> Tracks -> Setup -> Data Card Setup -> Check "Log Track to Data Card".
Then go to Menu -> Interface -> USB Mass Storage, and plug it into your computer. You will see files such as "20080311.gpx" saved to the microSD card. You can load these directly into geotagging software. They have all the time information attached. You won't need GPSBabel anymore, and it also lets you keep recording tracks essentially forever until the memory card fills up (no artificial 10000 point limit).
I haven't gotten this plugging working on my computer either, but I just wanted to give you some tips that should make using GPSPhotoLinker or anything else easier, too.

Hi,
Nice work! I have until now used GeoSetter? (http://www.geosetter.de/en/index.html) before importing the pictures into LR. I like GeoSetters? possibility to both use GPX files and click in an integrated Google Map interface. Really nice! How about merging the geotag-lightroom-plugin and GeoSetter? together into LR? Unfortunately i am not a programmer myself so i can not help you out here. ;-)
I ran across this thread today. I'm not sure if some of you can give me advice or direct me to another site.
This August I plan to take a small group of my photo students to an Asian country to photograph. It's important for us to have GPS info that can be put into an Excel spreadsheet, then into mapping software. I'm looking for a workable, affordable solution for us. Nearly all have Canon DSLRS, Lightroom, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic? on Macs. We don't have any GPS hardware yet (for instance from Jobo, Sony for on-camera use, or "normal" GPS units).
From my research so far, some writers suggest GPS capability might be a very common feature in many cameras. But our trip is this summer...
I'd appreciate any suggestions on hardware and software solutions.
- Dennis
You mention in the instruction to Copy the entire geotag.lrdevplugin directory to the following location: (XP) C:\Documents and Users\username\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom\Modules. However, there is no "Documents and Users" section within XP.
Instead it should be:
C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom\Modules
However, when I went to this location, there was no "Modules" folder. I did create one, then copied all the files in the ZIP folder to that location and started Lightroom. However, the new menu items do not appear.
There is a Modules folder with the Program Files area...if you navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.4\Modules
So I closed Lightroom, and moved the files to this location. However, when I then launch Lightroom, I still don't see the additional options show up under the File menu.
Any suggestions as to whether this works with Windows XP and Lightroom 1.4?
Thanks, David Riecks
HI, Did as instructed and got the plug-in installed (Vista) and svaed, and then successfully managed to run the program, but when I tried to iew the data the location field is still blank (which is I assume where the geo info would be?). I also get a flaky string or two, but the restart of Lightroom seems to be the answer. However, it isn't tagging as it is supposed to - it did sync the time ok though... Help?
Hi, I was using RAW - I am seeing websites saying this plug-in works on jpeg only?
I'm not seeing anything either in RAW. I thought the sidecar files would be the same whether it was raw or not and would be where the updates are made. I read metadata from file when done, but nothing in location. If it is not updating the sidecar files then I am not sure what Lightroom integration means.
It also seems to spend a long time with a wait cursor even with one photo selected.
This is a good idea. I'd like to see you add reading the gps receiver via GPS Babel. A single interface that does everything that way -- Read the GPS receiver, save the results, tag the photos, import into LR.
Really neat, but some receivers log just NMEA data into a CSV file. Lat/Lon etc is all still there, but a pain to convert to a GPX file, would be nicer if this LUA could do it directly.
Hi, When I try to load the GPX file from my Garmin forerunner, I see the error
Jetphoto can read the GPX file and tag the photos without problem. I'm using Lightroom 1.4.1 and Mac OS 10.5.4.I'm experimenting with this. the tools at www.everytrail.com and www.gpsvisualizer work, but really we want these at RAW, not jpg. Anyway, I'm grateful to Jeff for creating this, but it's not clear that it's working. Where would I find the geotag if it were there? In the exif? Not there. Mac OSX 10.5.something.
Plug-in error log for plug-in at: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2\Modules\geotag.lrdevplugin
Error 1
An error occurred while attempting to run one of the plug-in’s scripts. TagUtil?.lua:206: attempt to perform arithmetic on field 'ele' (a nil value)
I agree it would be great to be able to manually geo tag photos with Google Maps. Just select on Google Maps where you shot the photo and its geotagged.
Is anybody actually reading these or are they just falling on deaf ears?
FWIW, I have a geoencoding plugin for Lightroom 2.0 and later, available here: http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/gps/
yes, and the stuff by jfriedl is really great.
With Mac Leopard, I receive this message
"TagUtil"?:120: attempt to concatenate field 'ele' (a nil value)
Why ?
