Reported by gears.team.srikanthk, Oct 15, 2008
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Upgrade from Firefox 3 to Firefox 3.1 Beta

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected :Google Gears compatible

FF3.1 reports Gears not compatible, provides option to uninstall

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Gears Version: 0.4.20.0
Platform:
 Hostname: testing-8.local
  Mac OS X Version 10.5.5 (Build 9F33)
  Processor: 4 Intel 2.66 GHz
  RAM: 2048 MB

Fire Fox Version : 3.1b1
Comment 1 by gears.team.cprince, Oct 15, 2008
Good catch. I bet it's because install.rdf says 3.0.*
http://code.google.com/p/gears/source/browse/trunk/gears/base/firefox/install.rdf.m4
instead of 3.*

I see Mozilla Developer Center hasn't been updated either; they still recommend 3.0.*
(see http://developer.mozilla.org/En/Install_Manifests).

Obviously, whoever makes this change should verify that Gears actually *does* work
with Firefox 3.1. :)
Comment 2 by CaveManGSz, Dec 03, 2008
Gears is not compatible with 3.1 - that means, after overriding the version check.

If Gears is active (I used MR Tech Toolkit to make compatible) and I enter Google
Reader - the site hangs, and does not display it's content (only the top line with
all the google services appear).

When Gears is disabled, the site works fine (although no offline usage of-course).

Gears Version: 0.5.4.2
Firefox Version: 3.1b1
RAM: 1.5GB
PC: Intel Pentium M 1.73GHz
Windows XP SP3

Overriding version check doesn't work.

Gears test page returns:
FF3.1b2/Webkit Nightly "Could not create database: google.gears.factory.create is not
a function"

No issues with Safari Version 3.2.1 (5525.27.1).

Gears Version: 0.5.4.2
Firefox 3.1b2 & Webkit Nightly (r40239)
Mac OS 10.5.6
Comment 6 by wolfgrrl, Jan 30, 2009
I too am having this issue. Changing install.rdf does not rectify the situation. Now
that Gmail has enable offline mail, many users are going to want to use Gears just
for this reason. When can we expect an update?

Gears: 0.5.4.2
FF: 3.1b2
Windows 7 (had same issue on Vista, too)

By the way, I'd be happy to be a beta tester for new Gears version on Windows 7.
Comment 7 by roberto.cardu, Jan 30, 2009
Same problem here. Gears works fine with Safari though.
Comment 8 by hoermann.j, Jan 31, 2009
I really want gears for Firefox 3.1 too.
Firefox 3.1 features a faster Javascript rendering engine that really makes a
difference on all the google sites. Please give us a beta of gears to try :)
Comment 9 by trpaslik.pl, Feb 04, 2009
FYI,

tested on Ubuntu 8.10:
on Firefox 3.1beta2 - does not work
on Firefox 3.1beta3-pre - does not work
on Firefox 3.2a-pre - does not work

I tested both:
- latest official gears from http://gears.google.com/
- latest trunk 3185 (0.5.11.0;developer;dbg;linux;firefox)

Comment 10 by prabahy, Feb 04, 2009
Even if this is not addressed until 3.1 final, http://gears.google.com/ should be
updated to represent what it really supports (1.5-3.0+).
Comment 11 by trpaslik.pl, Feb 04, 2009
@comment 10.

this is what we have already in the code. See:
http://code.google.com/p/gears/source/browse/trunk/gears/base/firefox/install.rdf.m4#71
The real problem is - how to make gears working with FF3.1.

Comment 12 by peawn.project, Mar 14, 2009
OSX 10.5.6 - FF3.1b3 doesn't work :-( 3.1 final is approaching!!!
Comment 13 by defconoii, Mar 29, 2009
any status on firefox 3.1 compatibility?
Comment 14 by pascal.herbert, Mar 30, 2009
there will never be a firefox 3.1

it will be fixed before 3.5 is released.
Comment 15 by philfreo, Mar 30, 2009
Good to hear that it'll be fixed before 3.5 (currently marked as 3.1) is released,
but I would really hope/expect Google to start making this available during some of
the beta releases. We are already on b3.
Comment 16 by wolfgrrl, Mar 30, 2009
Actually FF trunk is at 3.1b4 currently.
Comment 17 by pascal.herbert, Mar 30, 2009
Trunk is 3.5b4pre http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-
mozilla-1.9.1/
Comment 19 by julie.durbin, Apr 03, 2009
"it will be fixed before 3.5 is released."

Who wants to place bets?

In other interesting news, the Firefox development
meeting minutes (https://wiki.mozilla.org/Platform/2009-03-24) from a last week report that there are now
almost 500,000 Firefox 3.1b3 users.
Comment 20 by niedakh, May 24, 2009
how about fixing it a little earlier, huh?
Comment 21 by cooldll694, Jun 19, 2009
Hey, the FF 3.5 rc is already out, so Google Gears now must be hurry.
Comment 22 by andre.mondri, Jun 23, 2009
Guess they will fix it months after Finalrelase of FF 3.5. Thumps down ...
Comment 23 by m...@baptiste.us, Jun 24, 2009
Sad to see FireFox support going away. Here's hoping WordPress drops the gears
support for the admin screens and uses the new FireFox offline stuff. Unfortunate.
Comment 24 by pascal.herbert, Jun 24, 2009
As you can see the bug is Priority-1
btw: 105 people have starred the bug and might get a mail when you comment. So don't
comment if you want to say that is not good.

i bet google will publish soon Gears 0.6 and fixes this bug.
Comment 25 by julie.durbin, Jun 27, 2009
I'm now posting this from FF 3.5. Can propose we change the Issue title?

Is FF really going away? I couldn't find that posted...
Comment 26 by 4braham, Jun 30, 2009
Firefox 3.5 is now stable: http://firefox.com/
Comment 27 by jcbangsund, Jun 30, 2009
Stable but still no gears.
Comment 28 by geza0kovacs, Jul 02, 2009
(Also posted in issue 335) Here's a precompiled version that'll work with firefox-3.5
from
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa on Ubuntu 9.04 x86_64:

http://gkovacs.xvm.mit.edu/google-gears-firefox-3.5-x86_64/gears-linux-x86_64-0.5.25.0.xpi

It was built from http://gears.googlecode.com/svn/trunk revision 3373

If you'd like to build it yourself, use the following commands:

svn co http://gears.googlecode.com/svn/trunk -r3373
cd trunk
wget http://gkovacs.xvm.mit.edu/google-gears-firefox-3.5-x86_64/gears-gcc433.diff
patch -p0 -i gears-gcc433.diff
make

Patch needed to get it compiling on gcc 4.3.3 is attached:

gears-gcc433.diff
6.6 KB Download
Comment 29 by rdaros, Jul 02, 2009
Updated today to FF 3.5 final, and obviously Gears did not work. Trying to reinstall
did not help.

This issue has been around for a while, and it shouldn't be too hard to fix... maybe
this is on purpose, to push people to Chrome? I doubt it, but I see no other explanation.

Is there anyone from Google reading this, to shed some light?

Thanks.
Comment 30 by zmanian, Jul 02, 2009
I've seem to have gears built and working on Ubuntu 9.04 i386.

I used geza0kovacs patch from above.

I had to chmod 770 third_party/gecko_1.9/linux/gecko_sdk/bin/xpidl

then make and make installers and then edit the rdf file for compatibility with 3.5.1
from the daily ppa and it seems to be working now.
Comment 31 by pmontepagano, Jul 02, 2009
With that patch I get this output:

I'm on x86_64 with gcc 4.4.0. I also have libidl2 0.8.13, which seems to be the
incompatible package.

In case anyone's interested, here are Firefox 3.5 compatible xpi builds for Windows
i386 (compiled on Visual Studio 2008 SP1) and Linux i386 and x86_64 (compiled using
gcc 4.3.3 on Ubuntu using my patch posted above):

Anybody have any update as to when Gears will be fixed to work with FF3.5?
Comment 36 by pascal.herbert, Jul 13, 2009
Google just began to push gears 0.5.29.0 out. it is working with firefox 3.5
Comment 37 by guillaume.boudreau, Jul 14, 2009
For those who see an empty page on http://gears.google.com, you can install Google
Gears in FF 3.5 directly by using those URLs:
Mac: http://addons.mozilla.org/google/google_gears_osx.html
Linux: http://addons.mozilla.org/google/google_gears_linux.html

The URLs above redirect to the appropriate XPI files that Firefox will handle correctly.

For Windows, the installation is different I think: http://gears.google.com/?
platform=win
Comment 38 by eric.abouaf, Jul 17, 2009
Firefox 3.5.1 is out and Gears 0.5.29.0 is not compatible (although it works if you
set extensions.checkCompatibility to false in about:config)
Comment 39 by pascal.herbert, Jul 17, 2009
