Reported by gears.team.aa, Nov 28, 2007
The Gears website erroneously reports that Debian's renamed version of Firefox, Iceweasel, is
unsupported. Note that the browser is identical to Firefox and only differs in name due to
trademark issues with Mozilla. Note that Iceweasel's About box lists the following information:
"Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070723 Iceweasel/2.0.0.6 (Debian-
2.0.0.6-0etch1+lenny1)".

I believe that the Gears XPI will in fact install on IceWeasel since it has the same
targetApplication GUID. So this would just be a change to the website.

Yes, please fix this, or at least tell us the exact User-Agent string that the web
page is expecting, so that I can download Gears at my own peril.

Still not working (Sept 22nd 2008)

After some additional investigations:
Go to http://gears.google.com/terms.html?platform=linux
This will start the installation of Gears, and it runs like a charm.

How hard is it to only check the "Gecko/<version>" part of a UA string?
Comment 10 by sheri...@shezza.org, Mar 31, 2009
Come on Gears devs, iceweasel is essentially an unbranded Firefox.

I can't believe this simple ticket has been open almost 2 years

and allowing a x86_64 version for Firefox on Fedora 10 PLEASE!

Linux should not be a second class citizen with a company
that runs it for so many internal stuff, but only releases
some stuff for windows...

Google code does good stuff, please put some of the
search money towards opening up to 64 bit linux
of all flavors!!!

This should really be a braindead bug to be fixed, come on!
I'm using arch's Shiretoko (firefox is named like that here) and from 3.5 I can't
even manually install it by giving it the xpi, because firefox has runtime checks and
disables google gears! :(
Please guys, do something about it!
Comment 14 by clive.crous, Jul 21, 2009
Google FTW!
Comment 15 by johnfranck, Nov 06, 2009
Why is this not fixed yet. This is ridiculous!
Comment 16 by JayenAshar, Nov 06, 2009
Let's face it, guys. Google doesn't care about user-friendliness for debian users.
And it sure doesn't care at all about 64-bit users.
Comment 17 by steffen....@googlemail.com, Nov 08, 2009
Two words : epic fail !
Shiretoko != ( Firefox || Iceweasel ) ??
Can't you guys parse simple text string ?
In case someone doesn't know how to quick fix use this addon :
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59
and change Shiretoko or anything to Firefox for all low quality websites like
gears.google.com
