What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Download and install Google Gears for Windows XP using Firefox 4 Beta 2. 2. Check Firefox Add-Ons manager. 3. Try to use a site (such as Offline Gmail) with Google Gears features.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Add-On manager lists Gears as "not compatible." Gmail redirects users to Gears download page as if it doesn't realize Gears is already installed.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? Firefox 4 Beta 2 on Windows XP 32-bit.
Please provide any additional information below. I realize HTML5 is Google's direction but as Google has not yet implemented HTML5 features such as offline Gmail I am hoping that Gears will get one more update for Firefox 4?

Posted on Sep 16, 2010 by Helpful Pandait isn't just on windows there is a problem, under linux gears isn't compatible with anny of the up to date browsers (no ff4 support, no chrome support,...).
ther are two ways to solve this: - Make more and faster gears releases compatible with different platforms (maybe also chrome on linux) - Phase-out gears in favor of HTML5 and make all google "offline" products HTML5 capable
i personally prefer the second one, but the first one would be great to

Posted on Sep 18, 2010 by Quick DogCurrently on FF 4.0b6. Aww, I was hoping Gears would work on it. Turns out it won't. Any idea of when a release will come? For the Firefox 4 betas?

Posted on Oct 1, 2010 by Helpful DogGoogle has ceased development on Gears in favor for HTML5 http://bit.ly/duEb18
It unlikely that the current release of Gears v0.5.36.0 will be updated to support Firefox 4.

Posted on Oct 5, 2010 by Happy OxThe blog entry mentioned by @v5point0 is 8 months old. The Google Apps still do not support HTML5 Web Storage[1], and there has been very little communication from Google regarding their plans for offline applications.
Since Google Gears has been abandoned, and Web Storage for Google Apps is not available for Firefox 4 (and other browsers?), this means that offline mode for Google Mail, Google Calendar and Google Docs is currently dead.

Posted on Mar 30, 2011 by Swift Bear9 months on from first comment, do I or do I not change mail etc over to google. Gears is critical where internet connections are always being interrupted even in cities like Melbourne. Latest version of Explorer also incompatible with Gears.
