Seems a shame to have this functionality and not expose it via the API.

Obviously what people are too scared to mention is the possibility of exporting their
albums using this data to Facebook. Which I think would be awesome. Also being able
to drag your albums kicking and screaming out of Facebook into Picasa would be
amazing too. I imagine a little third party service/software that manages a lookup
table between contacts and Facebook friends. Or perhaps even adding the Facebook
profile url in to my Google contact details under an "other" entry would be able to
facilitate the lookup without utilising a local or cloud based third party lookup.

I have a dream whereby I can view my albums with all the same contextual data such as
"name tags", comments etc in any place - desktop/Facebook/Picasa/my own website.

Help us make this happen Google!

I can see myself touching up, describing and tagging my photo's on Picasa on my
desktop. Uploading these to Picasa Web in all their full featured glory. Then at the
click of a button firing these photo's straight into Facebook, with comments and tags
all in place.

This all leads to me paying for more storage space in Picasa. $$$ for you guys :-)

To collect some more information on the use case here-

I am guessing the actions you would all like to see in the API is something like -

* Show list of all recognized subjects (faces) in the API
* Filter above list to subjects without a name
* Add/Change the name associated with a particular subject
* Search all photos in album or user account that contain a particular subject

Does this sound like a pretty exhaustive list?

Yes, it does. It seems the data backend stores quite detailed information about
recognized faces, such as the region in a photo where a face has been recognized, and
probably also scoring data indicating the confidence in a recognition. It might be
that some users would like to have access to these data, but I and probably most
others would be EXTREMELY happy getting the functionality you describe.

Actually, for what it's worth, for me it would suffice to get the names returned as
additional tags when querying all tags for a photo.

@jfisher: yes, and please also make it possible to extract the rectangle defined by the
user/algorithm who tagged the person out of the image. Meaning it should not only be
possible to fetch all images containing a certain person, but also only the marked
faces of that person.

That looks pretty complete.  Ideally the list of recognized subjects would contain
the location and size of each recognized subject.  Also the ability to add subjects
manually where none was found, or where they have been previously identified via
another method.  

Has any work been done on a standard metadata format to store subjects(faces) in the
original files?  The capability to identify faces seems to be popping up in several
places, but as far as I know, none of them are adding the metadata back to the
original files.

For completeness, I think there's two aspects here: first is just face region data
and the second is an API to access Picasa Web's automatic face detection.

In terms of just face region (i.e. regions that have been named by a user either from
automatic detection or manually drawing a bounding box), face data API should:
1) Provide CRUD operations for face regions (including bounding box, coordinates, and
name)
2) List all face regions in a particular image (plus reasonable filters)
3) Search all photos for a particular name

In terms of Picasa Web's facial recognition algorithm:
4) List all face regions in a photo identified by the algorithm
5) List all names of persons the algorithm has matched photos to (presumably, Google
has some kind of probability data on this match as well that could be returned)
6) Ability to name regions automatically identified (or mark regions as "Not a Face",
"Ignore", etc)

I think #1, #2, and #3 are the pieces of functionality that most developers want. #4
might be next on the priority list followed by #5. #6 I imagine would just be a
combination of #1/#4 except with an additional ability to provide feedback back to
the facial recognition algorithm for false positives.

Does the new 2.0 api have support for this?

It would be great to just get the list of people in the photo, analogous to TagData
or TagEntry.  I.e. the first item from comment 26:

Facial recognition would be of great value to software that integrates photo
libraries with genealogical information. Many users have large libraries of photos of
people, singly or in groups, that are important genealogically. Ancestors or
relatives for example.
To be useful the API would have to provide the full contact information and the
region in the photo of the recognized face.
You could then do a tree that shows the relationships of the persons in the photo
with thumbnails from the photo of the recognized faces. Or draw rectangles on the
displayed photo with name labels.
With the new facial recognition feature, users are organizing their libraries and
identifying faces. But with no API for access, and no tags in the photos that can be
recognized by other programs, the information is locked in the Picasa system. You can
manually add a name tag to each photo that is in the face album, but this does not
tell which face is which. So near and yet so far ...

Please release (to developers) Picasa - Face Data - Access .

You will surely get many open source application and ideas.

You can also organize some code competition and get ideas.

It's been over a year since this was suggested.  Is this feature coming?  If so when?

This would be incredibly useful to my organization and would mean that we would be
writing a plugin to picasa rather than trying to duplicate all of that work.

3.2.) Search all photos for a name (or part of a name) and any tag.

This has been open for ~2.5 years now and is by far the most starred issue. And only one response (comment 26) from a project member? Lots of clarifying comments since then.

Like others, I want to see a list of faces. That list needs to include the identity of the person and the location of the box around that persons face.

The ability to add, update, change stuff would be nice, as would searching and filters. But I really just want the list with locations.

and please add:

1. return name and other data in response to picture-based query of picasa web-albums
2. compressed (facial-features) query for embedded clients ex. security cameras against picasa web-albums
3. return parameters such as sex, age, smile, blink, race, facial-symmetry ... (beauty?) in response to query to picasa web-albums
4. return percentage matches for queries to picasa web-albums
5. allow logical queries of picasa web-albums ex. return pix of bill && monica && ^hillary
6. return "best-picture" of an individual in response to a query using name or picture-data ... could be based on votes, tags or
7. allow "best-picture" to be back-substituted into current image and patched ... replace a person who has their eyes closed, face partially occluded etc.

This sounds extremely useful for my needs.

I think they dont make it because it is not good for Privacy.
Imagine the following:
1.) You make an invitaion for an public event on an Social Network.
2.) The Users will connect somehow to that invitaion (Like, +1, Join, ...)
3.) Now you have personal profiledata of that person and an image
4.) You place an cam on the entrance of that event ....
5.) Now you have an complete personal profile of the persons who visit the event.
6.) Now you can act .... Play the right sound, increase the price for some special offer, .... just joking.

I think the wishlist of the API is quite complete.
For the above mentioned Applikation I would need the ability to POST an Image (of one or more Persons) and get Face information of the Person(s) on it.

Does any Google Developer give us an statement about that API?

I'm keen to exploit this functionality to enhance analysing old family photographs on a web site so would like to know how to get this issue moving forward as it seems Google have been sitting on the subject for nearly 3 years.
