Specs for a basic vernacular names cataloging tool
Updated Sep 4, 2009 by dprem...@gmail.com
This page is under construction and subject to significant revision.

Use case

A community of users has knowledge of the common names of local plants and animals in their region and native language. An organisational body would like to capture this knowledge and make it available through the GBIF network to use to facilitate access to biodiversity data mobilised within the country. A tool is needed to provide a simple mechanism for cataloging this information which may originate within individuals or contained in regional publications that will be transcribed.

Description

A web interface allows a user to identify a source of vernacular names data. The user may be the source based on domain knowledge or the user may refer to a document containing vernacular names data. One interface allows the user to identify and record source information. A user may provide data from multiple sources.

An editorial interface allows a user to enter vernacular names data into a simple spreadsheet interface. Different sources are separated as different worksheets in the editorial interface. Only one worksheet is required to be visible at any time.

The data entry spreadsheet references components of the GNA data format.

  • Core taxon elements include the entries for the major Linnaean ranks, scientificName, and the atomic components of species and infraspecies.
  • All elements of the Vernacular Names extension.

Note: This application would not reference Checklist Bank web services to display vernacular names already indexed from other sources. It is a data entry tool.

Requirements

Interface

Configurable display

The editor can configure the columns to be displayed/hidden and can re-order the columns
Auto-complete
Data entry will incorporate auto-complete to utilise previously entered values. Auto-complete entries are column-specific and limited to values entered previously by the user.
Carry-over
Certain values in a data record may remain relatively static over the course of many entries. To facilitate data entry, these columns may be optionally configured to carry-over the value of the previously entered value.

Web app

Open Source

The final product will be freely available for download and implementation.

Simple-multilingual configuration

A simple gettext() style configuration will allow the text components of the interface to be translated into local languages and encoding.

Back end

Database or text-indices as proposed by developer

Ouput

The web application would export DwC Archive files in the GNA format, ready for publication to the GBIF network.
