Introduction

GBIF is developing definitions for GNA vocabularies that support the Darwin Core and GBIF terms used in the GNA data exchange format.

These vocabularies are currently manually managed in subversion but are open for changes and additions from the community. Please contact Markus Döring if you want to contribute to the developments.

Vocabulary Format

The format used is a custom xml scheme which allows for multilingual representations of concepts. Every concept has a preferred term and in addition can have any number of alternative "synonyms".

Semantic Web / Linked Data

All vocabularies are build with rdf in mind and therefore have proper URIs as their identifiers. The URIs do not currently resolve, but it is planned to expose them as RDF. The format is still being debated upon with SKOS being the best candidate so far.
