Resource-level information - EML Metadata used to describe a published resource may include a bibliographic citation
Data-level citation - The GNA format includes the means to embed bibliographic citations at the data record level. If classification data is published in a normalised data format, the citation information may be utilise this more efficient hierarchical structure by inserting a citation at the highest common taxon for which the citation applies. For example, if all data records for mammals are derived from a single citable source, the citation can be linked to the corresponding Mammalia taxon record in the data set.

Data-level citation practices

Citation information is inherited downward by all child taxa if no other citation is included.
Citation information is NOT accumulated upward. For example, one citation may be linked to a Mammalia entry and generally applies to all mammal species but a different citation for a child taxon, Primates, applies to all child primate taxa.

World Register of Marine Species

WoRMS provides a citation for every record that is composed of a reference to an originating source dataset followed by a reference to it's mobilisation via the WoRMS service. The citation is verbose and would appear to present problems in parsing for some subsequent normalisation into a common citation protocol.
