Gant project should not only integrate with external calendar like google, it 
should also allow to interlink the calendar of a specific human resource with 
an external public calendar of that specific technician or team/department 
member. This would allow a more realistic resource planning especially when a 
technician has to several non related teams, groups and/or departments. 
Especially availability and load issues could be a lot better be leveled.

Any hope to get calendar integration? At least have the choice to export to 
*.ics (iCalendar format) which seems to be acceptable to many calendars?

Absolutely.  One of the first things I looked into.  I have not tried it yet, 
but, you may be able to get some data up exporting to ms project and importing 
your GanttProject data to Google Calendar as a ms project import.
