Is this something you are working on? I'd like to help but am pretty new at flex/actionscript so it'll be a tough start. Can you point me in the right direction?

The SVN repository contains a new demo using HierarchicalLayouter? and an orientation control to go left-right, bottom-up, etc. It seems it would be what you are looking for.
