Issue 5304: Granular cache control

Reported by darron.d...@gmail.com, Mar 5, 2012
As a front end developer I work with the cache disabled (most of the time). Generally this is so that I can test js that I am developing.

What would be very nice is if you could disable caching on items *except for* cdn libraries (google jquery etc)

I don't even know if this is possible. But it would save a whole lot of unnecessary traffic to google.

I am not aware of an option to control that. When you set "Disable Browser Cache", Firebug actually sets the browser internal preferences "browser.cache.disk.enable" and "browser.cache.memory.enable", which are boolean values.
Honza, do you know an option to control the cache behavior that way?

No

But there are cache API so, perhaps there could be a tool that constantly removes specific entries (based on URl) from the cache?

So I mark this as request for an extension.
Darron, please have a look at the existing extensions:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=browser+cache

There might be one that already does what you need.
E.g. BetterCache sounds promising (though didn't test by myself):
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bettercache

And please give us feedback.

I've done a run through all of the caching plugins and none of them give you the ability to delete specific items. So it sounds like it would be an entirely new thing.

I guess the only alternative is to run a caching proxy on the local network and set it to only cache items from a list. The only down side to that is having an external interface to deal with and potentially upsetting other devs on the local network.

Just wanted to try out BetterCache again but had to see that the author deleted it for some reason.
