We should convert the image map inspector from canvas to SVG. This has a number of advantages:
- Canvas performance on larger screens is not very good whereas SVG performance on large screens is excellent so the inspectors performance would be increased
- It would be very simple to inspect SVG objects on a page by simply cloning their shape with the highlighter (not currently possible)
- SVG shapes can be transformed in the same way as HTML elements can be transformed by CSS so this same inspector could potentially be used on normal HTML elements
- If everything could be moved into SVG in this way we would be very close to moving the inspector into XUL

Ironically if we don't have problems mixing HTML and SVG here it should be fairly simple.

Sounds good. :) In FF4 you should be able to mix SVG into any HTML doc, no?

Yes, in FF4 it is simple but I not so sure about 3.6 ... as you know there are issues with mixing the 2 types there.

Make it FF4 only. :)

Since issue 4848 now covers the general implementation of the SVG-based Inspector, this issue should just cover the part of being able to inspect and highlight SVG objects.
Inspecting actually already works, though the highligter needs to be added.

Here's a test case for this:
1. Open Firebug at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/07/DEU_Bohmte_COA.svg
2. Switch to the HTML panel
3. Click the Inspector button
4. Move the cursor over the upper left leaf

=> The SVG path should be highlighted.

This actually describes the same as in issue 2483 with the only difference that SVG is embedded in an HTML page. Therefore I merge both.
