Issue 3565: Change the names of the major tabs

Project Member Reported by sroussey, Oct 24, 2010
We ought to change the names of the major tabs represent more of what they really do.

Take the HTML tab. HTML is text really, and our HTML tab really represents the current set of nodes in the document object model. If any panel should be called DOM, it is this one. But we already have one named DOM, so perhaps Nodes or Elements would be better. Nodes is the most accurate, since we show text nodes, which are not Elements. But Elements is used elsewhere. I like Nodes.

The DOM panel is not about the DOM, it is about the properties of some object, defaulting to the window. Maybe call it Properties?

The Net panel, well it should contain file:// requests, etc., making it a misnomer as well. Paint events have nothing to do with network requests, for example. But it is great to see them overlaid on top of each other. Timeline is used elsewhere as an alternative.

Thoughts? Not targeting anytime soon...

I like "Nodes" as new name for the HTML panel. I think renaming it was already discussed somewhere at an SVG topic, because there "HTML" doesn't make sense at all.

Also "Properties" sounds good for me as replacement for "DOM", though it's a bit long.

Renaming the Net panel was already discussed in issue 1208 . There I already mentioned, that "Time" (also "Timeline") isn't covering all it's functionality. Therefore I would have called it "Requests".

(BTW Users *hate* changes like this).

My suggestion:
  Console: Log
  HTML: Markup
  DOM: Objects
  Net: Time

Yeah, I know users hate changes, but at some point we ought to Just Do It. I would wait until we have some other largish UI changes.

DOM -> Objects is a good one. And Net -> Time. I don't agree with Console changing, partly because it is the same name as the console object, even though more things get logged there besides stuff from the console. Also, with Markup, like HTML, it sounds like the text file, yet it is pretty descriptive. And less a departure from HTML (just sounds more general).

Of course they hate them, though the names are not covering (anymore) all what the panels are doing. So renaming them is just a consequence of that. As the people got used to the current names, they will get used to the new ones with the time. But surely there will be some questions like "Where's the DOM panel gone?!!".

> I would wait until we have some other largish UI changes.

That is exactly what I was proposing for 1.8 in a mail lately (to be precise it was last Wednesday)! Though unfortunately nobody answered to this yet...

>  Console: Log
>  HTML: Markup
>  DOM: Objects

Brief and recognizable. Though I still don't agree with "Time" as replacement for "Net". Can somebody explain me why he would name it like so? At least what we are seeing are not just timelines, but HTTP and cache request data.

I also think "Timeline" is better

No, NOT "Time" and also NOT "Timeline". Honza, didn't you read my first comment? Are you doing that to me intentionally? :-)

Oops, I overlooked that you actually don't like "Timeline" :)

For me the main feature of the Net tab is viewing the params, headers, post, response, JSON, HTML and cookie information of HTTP communications. The timeline is really a tool for optimizing websites ... I would say that it is a totally separate feature.

I would say that HTTP would be a more appropriate name than NET but naming it Time or Timeline would be totally missing a very powerful feature of this dual purpose tab.

How about calling the Net tab "HTTP / Timeline" to keep everybody happy?

Next big UI change this should be fixed.

My suggestion:
Console -> Console
HTML    -> DOM HTML
DOM     -> DOM Object
CSS     -> Style
Script  -> Script
Net     -> Network
        -> Settings

The DOM consist of two parts, the HTML part (which displays the documents elements in a table) and the objects part (which are all properties, methods, and events). Because those two belong together, I suggest putting both after each other. See also https://developer.mozilla.org/en/About_the_Document_Object_Model#What_is_the_DOM.3f the second paragraph.

The Scripts tab is an overview of all scripts. The CSS tab is an overview of all styles (note that styles is a better name here and cooperates with the scripts tab).

The Net tab should be named Network, as this reflects more what it shows; all the items that are downloaded over the network.

I also suggest a Settings tab.

Note, that e.g. for SVG files the name "HTML" doesn't make sense. See my first comment.

> The Net tab should be named Network, as this reflects more what it shows; all the items that are downloaded over the network.

Again, the Net panel is showing more than just the network traffic. It is also showing files fetched from the browser cache. So "Net" or "Network" are not correct anymore. See my first comment and issue 1208 .

> I also suggest a Settings tab.

This issue is just meant for renaming the tabs, not adding new functionality. Please add a new issue for that.

Oke, in that case I suggest changing the name too XML, as every file is based on an XML scheme.

In that case I suggest using "Resources". In that case it doesn't matter if its downloaded or cached.

My revision:
Console -> Console
HTML    -> DOM XML
DOM     -> DOM Object
CSS     -> Style
Script  -> Script
Net     -> Resources
        -> Settings

I think John nailed it.. users will hate this. Ask yourself, is it *really* needed? Take in consideration that you break already written tutorials and blog articles telling people how to use Firebug and the explaining the panels.. I'm not sure if its worth it.
Nov 18, 2010
#13 sebastia...@gmx.de
If it weren't really needed, we wouldn't have this discussion.
Of course existing tutorials and articles about Firebug will not be up-to-date anymore, but it's the same with many other things in Firebug, that changed with the time. It's the same with every actively developed software.
Even when this is not a functional change, it is a logical step. And the reasons for this step are given in the above comments.

Here are my suggestions with reasoning:

Console -> Console - no reason to change
HTML -> XML Tree - simple and descriptive
DOM -> Objects - more than just the DOM
CSS -> CSS - no reason to change
Script -> Script - no reason to change
Net -> HTTP / Time - short name to cover the dual usage of this tab

What about the browser internal cache reads?

I am starting to think that it is better to keep a general name for the Net tab as it has too much functionality to specifically name, so:

Console -> Console - no reason to change
HTML -> XML Tree - simple and descriptive
DOM -> Objects - more than just the DOM
CSS -> CSS - no reason to change
Script -> Script - no reason to change
Net -> Timeline - this name implies requests inside a timeline and is the same name as Safari uses. If we called the tab "Requests" then we would be missing the timeline functionality, also "Timeline / Requests" is too long a name

Nov 19, 2010
#17 sebastia...@gmx.de
Each request is having specific information bound to it. This information includes the time measurements. That's why I would choose "Requests". But I already emphasized this too often and it seems nobody agrees with me. So I am out of this discussion.

I agree with sebastian that "Requests" is a better name than "Timeline". When I look at that tab, I see a list of requests, with information about each request. The information includes a timeline but also the other columns: URL, status, domain, and size. And I can expand each request to show tabs for Headers, Response, JSON, etc., none of which have anything to do with a timeline. Calling the tab "Timeline" would be emphasizing a small part of the tab's functionality too much.

I agree that HTML and DOM should be changed, but I'm not sure which of the suggestions so far would be best. I also agree that Console, CSS, and Script are good enough names and don't need to be changed.

It took a bit until I could find this issue again. So to give some more keywords: In this issue we want to rename the main panels.

Decision coming from our meeting: this would be too confusing for users.
