Issue 3156: Add option for toggling display of error count in status bar to the Firebug Menu

Reported by sebastia...@gmx.de, Jun 18, 2010
There should be an option in the Firebug Menu to toggle the value for extensions.firebug.showErrorCount, so that the user can decide whether to show the error count besides the Firebug icon inside the status bar.

First we need to answer:
Why would anyone not want the error count? Why do we even have showErrorCount?

If we have this option, users may forget they set it, then suffer from a loss they don't understand.

For the same reason why Mozilla is re-designing the Firefox UI. To tighten it up and just show the information and options the user needs. Though for the original reason why this was implemented you would have to ask Joe, as this preference is already in Firebug since version 1.0.

There are many options in Firebug the user may forget about after setting once or even don't know they are existing. Because of that I was already creating the "Firebug Preferences" page in the wiki. And also because of this reason I was creating this issue. Why not let the user decide, if he wants to have the error count shown?
In my opinion there should also be a preferences dialog created to offer the user all Firebug options at one place. Though this would be more a topic for the discussion group.

Issue 2861 is having a good test case for showing the error count. Disable showErrorCount via about:config and have a look.

Implemented this for the Firebug Menu as well as for the Start Button context menu in r9070.

On FF4.0 at least, the option causes the Firebug status bar icon to be replace by a red circle with a white x. I think that if the user says no error count it should mean 'leave the bug alone please'. The red circle is unclear: it's not even clear it is related to Firebug.

I put the status back to started so we don't forget to discuss it.

You are right John. It's better to turn it totally off when "Show Error Count" is disabled. I'll have a look into it.
