The Entity Describer (E.D.) is a mechanism for intersecting the Semantic Web with the normal Web. It lets users tag resources on the Web with terms from structured knowledge representation and organization systems. In the first version, E.D. drew its semantic tags directly from the ontologies of the semantic web. In the present version, these special tags are gathered from the millions of topics in the Freebase database. In addition E.D. has been extended so that it is possible to use databases other than Freebase. Currently E.D. may be used with [www.connotea.org Connotea]. This means the tags are stored in the Connotea bookmark management site in addition to being stored into ED's database.

What is Freebase?

Freebase is a highly structured collaborative online database. It contains data harvested from different sources (Wikipedia, MusicBrainz) and data that has been added by individuals. You can add your own data to Freebase!

In addition, The Entity Describer can also be used with other databases that conform to the API. Download it and customize it

Please see this google doc for the API specifications: DataSource API

What is Connotea?

Connotea is a free online reference management system. It is a social bookmarking tool similar to CiteULike and del.icio.us where users can save links to their favourite sites.
