Einstein on Android Devices
Featured
Updated Dec 3, 2011 by melcher....@gmail.com

NewtonOS is now running on any Android 2.2 device and up. I recommend a CPU with at least 1GHz. More is better. This release is still in Beta, but I am very positive that this will be the first version of Einstein running on a PDA that has the potential to replace the MessagePad.

On the low end, this will likely run fine on a hacked $200 Nook Color, but as a highlight, I will hopefully be able to support the HTC Flyer and Samsung Galaxy Note which come with a great stylus.

For the brave among you Android device owners, you will find an early test version in the Downloads section.

Copy the file 717006.rom and Einstein.rex to /Download/Einstein on your Android device. Then install and launch the Android Package. The first launch will take quite a while, but after the Flash RAM is set up, further launches will be quicker.

PS: NOT YET WORKING: I am currently (Dec 3rd, 2011) trying to get network support going. Here is what you need to do:

Make sure that your version of Einstein has a menu item (Android menu button) that sais "Network". Don't press it now, just make sure it is there.

Now install the following packages on-by-on by dropping them into "/Download/Einstein" and selecting "Install" from the Android menu:

  • inetenbl.pkg (www.unna.org)
  • newtdev.pkg (www.unna.org)to be continued)
  • enetsup.pkg (www.unna.org)
  • inetstup.pkg (www.unna.org)
  • NE2K.pkg (part of Einstein)

(to be continued)

Which rex file does it need the one from the Mac OS 2010 build or the one from the Windows 2007 build or is there another? I have tried both and it just force closes when I open it.

This does run on my Nook Color (CM7). Very exciting.

From where can I download 717006.rom and Einstein.rex ?

I have this running quite nicely on my Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant) running CyanogenMod? 7.1 nightly. I am trying to get it to run on my Nook Simple Touch. It would be amazing to see the Newton OS rendered on an 600x800 eInk screen! However, it just force closes on the Nook. Any ideas what I can check to find out why it is closing? It does not appear to even touch the rom directory before exiting.

It immediately exits on my Notion Ink Adam using known good ROMs. I even tried to copy a working internal.flash and 717006.aif.img from Windows into /Download/Einstein hoping that it was just having trouble creating the files but it still doesn't work. Where should those files get created, anyway? Thanks!

I am sorry, I can't help with these issues right now. Work keeps me busy. I will try to get back to this as soon as I can.

I tried Einstein on my new Samsung Note. Great ! Enough space to write on the (green ;-) screen with the excellent pen and enough power for rosetta to translate my handwriting. I can install and use my packages, thanks a lot !

Works nicely on my Asus Silder. Please add Keyboard-Support ^^

An Question: Is it possible to run NewtonOS on native CPU-Speed, because of a native ARM CPU on most Android-Devices?

Comment by grapevi...@gmail.com, Mar 30, 2012

Wonder if Newton will run on my rooted but still somewhat sluggish Huawei M835 smartphone with Froyo? It has a <1GB CPU, but I replaced the 2 GB SDcard w/a larger and faster 4 GB and partitioned it into "thirds"(one partiton being small enough to use as a "swap" file), just in case I decided later to add a Linux distro or modded ROM, which, unsurprisingly, there aren't very many...just ONE that I know of. Even the ROM manager that I bought and downloaded on the Marketplace doesn't list my particular Huawei model, even though its release is now about 9 months old...sigh. Should have check out the phone further before I bought it, and spent $50 more on a better model with more internal storage...oh well, its my "first" Android, and smartphone tech becomes antiquated and obsolete the quickest of all computing devices. "Ice Cream Sandwich" will probably be "old hat" by no later than 2014.
