Members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint prepare for a rainy day. One of the things they prepare for is the possibility of not having access to necessities like food.

"We encourage Church members worldwide to prepare for adversity in life by having a basic supply of food and water and some money in savings." —The First Presidency, All Is Safely Gathered In: Family Home Storage, Feb. 2007, 1 http://www.providentliving.org/channel/0,11677,1706-1,00.html

This project aims to help those who want to store food by making it really easy to keep track of it all. It is based on the idea that the food stored will actually be rotated by use.

There are other options out there like http://www.foodstorageplanner.com/ although I have not tried it myself being a computer programmer I wanted to have it work my way so I wrote a system myself.

The program is written entirely python, uses a sqlite database backend, uses barcodes to store the data (A barcode scanner is a great thing to use with this program. If you want a cheap one try one from http://cuecats.com/).

The goal of the project is to make food storage management, tracking, upkeep as easy and painless as possible.

It hasn't completely met that goal yet, but it is definitely useable. My family uses it to track our own food storage.
