issue 142 (dvj does not install) commented on by interim.descriptor   -   Hi! Yes, sorry I vanished there... In short: The regression you report is because I doubled-back on a fix that allowed dvj to compile with SDL-1.2... Supporting both SDL-1.2 and SDL-2.0 was beyond my time constraints. So, if you want to compile dvj, grab revision 5225 of SDL-2.0, ./configure, make, and sudo make install... I'll be out of touch until Dec ~4, since I'm preparing for a dvj show... But hopefully this will get you to the point where you can try using it! -Chris

issue 142 (dvj does not install) commented on by interim.descriptor   -   Ah, I believe I know what's happening. It's trying to link to the Ubuntu ffmpeg libs, not the svn libs you just installed. I encountered this when I started looking at you issue last night, and thought it was a fluke. Apparently not. Need to understand why this is... The easiest way to fix this: sudo apt-get remove libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libavutil-dev libswscale-dev Obviously this solution isn't optimal if you are compiling other applications that require these... Packaging is indeed a priority, though there's just a couple more features I want to implement before making dvj more easily accessible to people. It's mostly taking features which already work, and making them extremely user-friendly. I have exceedingly high standards of quality I need to meet, before I release packaged versions. Do let me know if you find any other neat linux VJ software out there! If you find another program to be more useful for your particular needs, reporting this to me would be informative. If you're looking for a pair of video turntables, which can optionally be frequency-reactive, you might just find dvj optimal.

issue 142 (dvj does not install) commented on by Christoph.Buchner   -   yeah, i think i found the project via vjforums or vimeo ;-). plus, i'm trying to move to linux for vjing, so i'm checking out some vj softs right now which could enable a move away from windows. not interested in a mac version, though. i would find it a big big plus if you could make .deb packages (maybe even a repository) for ubuntu (also in 64bit), so the install procedures would be simpler, but that may be too much effort for now. launchpad has nice automated facilities for that, though, or so i hear. also, having to check out and install code of other packages is a bit cumbersome (and dangerous, could mess up the fine balance of a linux install, no?). the version in the ubuntu repos not new enough? anyways, compiled and installed ffmeg, without error as far as i can see (didn't complain at the end). dvj's make again, i get farther along, but again a very similar error. see attachment.

So you *will* get errors, but that should happen after dvj/dvj.lin is generated. If dvj.lin exists, then the program will run. ...yeah, I really need to update the documentation. Sorry 'bout that!

issue 142 (dvj does not install) Status changed by interim.descriptor   -   Ah! I need to add instructions to the install guide for grabbing ffmpeg from svn. In short, go ffmpeg's site, grab the version from subversion, run the following commands: ./configure --enable-gpl --enable-version3 --enable-nonfree --disable-debug make sudo make install Back in your dvj folder, try make again. Again, do let me know if you have any questions. I'd be surprised if you didn't. I'm actually surprised you found this project. I'm not really publicizing it yet. Regardless, welcome! Despite the lack of documentation, dvj is quite solid and capable (especially if you own an M-Audio Xponent MIDI controller). You might also be interested in the OSX version. That OS generally has fewer issues than linux, which I find sad and depressing. Let me know if you want an App Package for OSX. Else, hopefully your linux system is configured well, and has good 3d drivers (if such a thing exists in linux-land).
